Prelude and Tango - parts by Drake Mabry. For Orchestra. Latin, 21st Century. Intermediate. Set of Parts. Published by Drake Mabry Productions (S0.10570). Prelude and Tango for orchestra was commissioned in 2008 by the Vermont Youth Orchestra, Troy Peters, director. It was premiered and performed during the orchestra's summer 2009 tour of Quebec and France. The work begins with a slow and mysterious Prelude which features melodic fragments which will later be heard in their entirety during the tango. These are heard over a quiet undulating background tapestry. The Tango (in the Nuevo Tango style invented by Astor Piazzolla) highlights every family of orchestral instruments in a series of diverse variations which culminate in a roof raising ending. All the instrumental families have their spotlight: woodwinds, brass, percussion and strings. Video and audio performances of this piece are available on YouTube and at www.myspace.com/drakemabry. Antonio Lauro: Works for Guitar, Volume 1 by Antonio Lauro (1917-1986). For Guitar (Classical). Solos. Latin American. Intermediate-Advanced. Book. 32 pages. Published by Caroni Music (MB.C2001). ISBN 9782843944000. Latin American. 9.12x12.25 inches. Antonio Lauro is one of the most famous composers to come from Venezuela. He has written many works for orchestra, piano, choir, harpsichord, and guitar. He is most well-known for his guitar works, this being his main instrument. In the early 1980s he gave concerts in London and Paris at the request of John Williams and Paco Pena. The pieces represented in these guitar works are for players at a beginner-intermediate level, and in standard notation only. Continuing the 19th Century tradition of other composers of Venezuelan waltzes, Lauro named many of his pieces after people or places. These four waltzes are named after two of his nieces, his daughter, and a river in central Venezuela. The Venezuelan waltz differs from the European waltz in its rhythm which may alternate between 3/4 and 6/8 time and in its more syncopated style. The melodies are highly sentimental and romantic.
