Burnam composed this collection of piano pieces to correlate directly with her Step by Step piano course method. Prefixed to each piece is an indication of the exact page of Step by Step at which a selection from Pieces to Play may be introduced. When the student reaches the indicated page, they are ready to play with ease and with understanding. These pieces would also be very useful as supplementary material for other piano methods.

Description: This is a jolly piece built mostly of primary triad positions in D minor and G major -the exception being b flat and E harmonies. A bright, allegro tempo adds to the humor of the jest. Purpose: The purpose of this piece is to offer a cheerful 6/8 setting that explores the two basic rhythm patterns but without the tarantella sound. Suggestions for Instruction: Notice that the LH patterns all consist of blocked fifths and broken, root position triads. The LH will need to be able to move from one position to the other with ease, grace and security to keep the tempo moving forward. The reaches demanded of the RH generally outline chord inversions. If the student's theory background has reached this level, the relationship of the b flat harmony (relative minor) and the E Major harmony (secondary dominant) could be analyzed and discussed. Key: D minor

Description: A short beginning piece that has several teaching ideas. It begins in middle-C position and the right-hand position changes at m. 9. Purpose: Introduces various touches, dynamic contrasts, 8va, accents, a touch of pedal at the end, and a glissando for fun Suggestions for Instruction: Have the student first practice bouncing a single staccato note, then play the notes on the page in the same manner. Practice a 5-finger legato, then play those notes on the page. See if the student can play two notes; one note mf and the other f and hear a difference. It's much easier to make a difference between f and p. Work on contrasting two softs also (mm. 27-28). Key: C Major

Description: A miniature study of the waltz style of Chopin. Both hands get a chance to sing the melody. There is some shading-a practice in balance. Purpose: An introduction to waltz bass and melodic phrasing; legato and staccato touches; balance. The piece does not use standard primary chords throughout. Suggestions for Instruction: I always start with the left hand. The first note of the chord will be held while the rest of the chord comes in on the second beat. The middle section allows the left hand to sing. Point out the length of the slurs. One hand sings legato while the other hand is played staccato. The pedal is not needed if the first chord tone is held throughout the measure-or if all the slurred notes are connected smoothly. Key: A minor
