They Didn't Believe Me by Charlie Parker. Arranged by Jimmy Carroll. For small jazz ensemble with strings [alternate horn parts included]. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8044). We're all familiar with the famous Charlie Parker with Strings recordings that were made in 1949 and the early 1950s. Parker recorded these in the studio and did many live concerts. At first the reception from the critics wasn't so great. But, over time there recordings have been cherished by jazz fans all over the world. In fact, Parker's recording of Just Friends with strings became his best-selling single. Well, it may surprise you to know that there were several arrangements that were rehearsed for Parker's 1949 'With Strings' session that were either not recorded or were scrapped. This chart of They Didn't Believe Me was arranged by Jimmy Carroll for this date but was not recorded. We don't know the specific reason it wasn't recorded. But, due to markups on the original manuscript score and parts we do know that it was heavily rehearsed.

Rocker (AKA Rock Salt) by Charlie Parker. Arranged by Gerry Mulligan. For big band. Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Jazz Lines Publications (JL.JLP-8011). Though Charlie Parker received quite a bit of criticism during his lifetime for making his 'with Strings' recordings, they are now universally recognized as masterpieces. Parker's idea was to bridge the gap between jazz and classical music. Much of his inspiration originated in the 'modern' composers of the first half of the 20th century including Stravinsky, Bartok, Schoenberg, and Ravel. Norman Granz was initially against making these recordings, but Parker's persistance won out. In 1949, Norman Granz arranged for Parker to record an album of ballads with a mixed group of jazz and chamber orchestra musicians. In addition to Parker on alto saxophone featured were Mitch Miller on oboe and English horn; Bronislav Gimpel, Max Hollander, and Milton Lamask on violin; Frank Brieff on viola; Frank Miller on cello; Meyer Rosen on harp; Stan Freeman on piano; Ray Brown on bass; Buddy Rich on drums; and Jimmy Carroll as arranger and conductor. Charlie Parker did a live performance at Carnegie Hall on September 17, 1950 with a similar group performing some of the tunes that he had previously recorded. The musicians that night included: Tommy Mace on Oboe; Ted Blume, Sam Caplan, and Stan Karpenia on violins; Dave Uchitel on Viola; unknown cello; Wallace McManus on harp; Al Haig on piano; Tommy Potter on bass; and Roy Haynes on drums. This arrangement of Rocker was most likely arranged by Gerry Mulligan for this live concert. This is a great arrangement featuring interesting counterpoint and fresh-sounding harmonies clealy influenced by Tchaikovsky and Bartok. Gerry Mulligan, only 23 at the time, but already famous from his work with Claude Thornhill and Miles Davis (he did most of the arrangements for Birth of the Cool), put together a hip-sounding string arrangement based on his original composition. We have used the original manuscript as a basis for this publication. Though, we did transcribe Charlie Parker's part and the beginning piano solo and they are presented here as-played. But, in a separate staff we also indicated what was written for him so that your alto player has a choice in what to play. In addition, we have included alternate parts in the event that you don't have access to string players. The alternate parts are indicated below. We have marked this as difficult due to the demands of the alto part (assuming it is performed as Parker played it). But, other than that it is not a difficult arrangement. Chord changes have been supplied for the alto solo - the solo section is 'I Got Rhythm' changes in concert C. This publication features some of the most important bebop playing and influential arranging of the 20th century.
