22 Madrigals, Venice 1536 (highly varied pieces) - Score by Verdelot. For various instruments (ATTB). Recorder Quartets. The Italian Madrigal. Score. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMMA03). Philippe Verdelot (? - 1552) was one of several non-Italian composers who settled in Italy and dominated the early development of the madrigal. He published nine volumes of madrigals, and his church music (Masses and motets) was published in anthologies all over Europe. Though many of his 4-part madrigals are chordal and song-like, as are Arcadelt's, he sometimes wrote in a more flowing, imitative style, as in the fine Madonna il tuo bel viso (included here). He also developed 5-part writing, varying the music with delicate contrasts of texture and careful attention to individual words or phrases, or enjoying the rich sonority of multiple low voices. This book contains all of the pieces from his 1536 edition. Includes preface, editorial and performance notes as well as complete text with English translations. About The Italian Madrigal From 1520 until the end of the 16th century, the madrigal was the focus of all that was new and exciting in Italian music. The new style and techniques developed then were imitated in many countries. De Lassus, da Rore, Ruffo & others are included in this series.

Fantasie a Tre Voci - Score by Giovanni Bassano (1558-1617). For Lyra Viol, Tenor Viol, and Bass Viol; or 3 Violins; or SAT Recorders. String Trios, Recorder Trios. Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance. Score. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMIM11). Giovanni Bassano (c.1558 - c.1617) was an Italian Venetian School composer and cornettist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. He was a key figure in the development of the instrumental ensemble at St. Mark's basilica, and left a detailed book on instrumental ornamentation, which is a rich resource for research in contemporary performance practice. It is not known if he was related to Anthony Bassano a member of a well-known Venetian family of musicians. These pieces are suitable for any relatively quiet instruments, such as the violin famil, viols and recorders. About Italian Instrumental Music of the Renaissance These pieces are primarily for 2 or 3 instruments. Playable on recorders, viols - and some on crumhorns. Primarily available with just score - although later editions include parts.

Donna illustre del Lazio by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1751). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Soprano and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 37 pages. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH140-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-70-0. Most probably, this cantata was first performed in Rome at an accademia held at the cardinal's palace. Tarquinia is lauded equally for her beauty and for her virtue. If the first aria is playful in tone, the second strikes a more serious note, since female modesty is not something to take lightly! To this second aria Albinoni appends a very brief, third recitative that opens out into a longer cavata, a fugue-like section bringing the cantata to an animated and triumphant close.

Se piu sfida i miei pensieri by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1751). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Soprano and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 38 pages. Duration 9 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH108-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-66-2. The poetic theme of the cantata is the well-worn one of unrequited love. In the opening aria, the singer challenges the God of Love to battle. This is a true aria di battaglia in which the singer mimics the idiom of the trumpet. Indeed, the first seven bars of the vocal part, transposed up a whole tone, would suit a Baroque trumpet in C excellently. The protagonist, whose persona is male (although that fact did not then, and does not today, disqualify the cantata from performance by female sopranos), confesses his love-smitten state in a brief recitative.

Dubbio affetto il cor mi strugge by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1751). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Soprano and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 37 pages. Duration 8 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH146-FSP). ISBN 978-1-904229-76-6. This cantata, from an important manuscript in Berlin containing 18 Albinoni cantatas for soprano and continuo, is on the ever-popular subject of a timid lover who, in the course of three arias and two recitatives, eventually plucks up the courage to declare his love openly. His progress from confusion via self-pity to a growing confidence is charted in the well-contrasted arias, which show Albinoni's lyrical gift at its best.
