Polaris by Mark Ford. Marimba Solo - Unaccompanied. For marimba solo (marimba). Level 5. Book. Composed 1996. Duration 9 minutes, 30 seconds. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.S-MF-POL).
"Mark Ford has distinguished himself as a scholar, as a performer and as the composer of popular percussion works such as Head Talk and Stubernic. In Polaris, Ford delivers another winning composition. Polaris is an unaccompanied one-movement composition requiring the use of a 4 1/2- octave (low-F) marimba. Mainly in 7/8 time, Polaris is in rondo form utilizing two ostinato patterns to help unify the work. The work opens with a brief chorale setting. The intervals between the notes of the chords used in this section become the foundation of much of the melodic material to come. Polaris proceeds into a fast, driving pattern-oriented tour de force for advanced four-mallet marimbists. Beginning subtly, the ostinato patterns are established, the melodic material presented and eventually developed. The work is primarily of a tonal nature, in minor modes, but does employ a recurring melodic motive of a perfect fourth to a minor second to another perfect fourth. This motive is also material for development. Adding interest as the work progresses, the melody shifts from one voice to another and reappears in thirds and sixths. Rhythmically, Polaris incorporates much constant 16th-note material with sections of syncopated motives. Approximately 9 1/2 minutes in length, Polaris possesses a substantial amount of interesting melodic, harmonic and rhythmic material. This composition not only will challenge the marimbist, but will satisfy performers and audiences alike. Rightfully so, I expect Polaris will find its way to a variety of percussion recitals." - Rich Holly Percussive Notes, April 1997.

Originally written for solo guitar, Un Dia de Noviembre is a marimba transcription of a very popular piece by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. It's performed with four mallets on a 4.5 (low E) octave marimba. This piece has a lyrical and simplistic beauty which will require a mature sense of musical phrasing from the performer. The accompaniment alternates between the right and left hands throughout and occasionally requires one-handed rolls from each hand at different points. By way of natural chord voicings and intuitive playing patterns, Jason Baker has done a masterful job of capturing the heart of the original work through the marimba's expressive range.

Scherzo Brilliante by Unknown Russian Composer. Arranged by Harold Jones. Keyboard Solo with Piano. For marimba or xylophone solo with piano accompaniment (marimba or xylophone and piano). Level 4. Score and set of parts. Composed 1995. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.S-HJ-SCH).
Scored for xylophone or marimba and piano accompaniment, this 142-measure, two-mallet solo was composed by an unknown Russian musician. This moderately difficult, tonal composition is challenging in that the performer's presentation is very transparent in its rapid, 6/8, scalar passages. There is a brief modulation to D major from the opening and closing G major sections, making this three-part, single-movement work very appropriate for the undergraduate recital presentation. Reminiscent of some of the older Musser keyboard/ piano solos, the piano accompaniment is very complementary to the solo keyboard presentation. - Jim Lambert Percussive Notes, October 1997.

Valse Excentrique by Yo Goto. Percussion Ensemble. For Marimba (4-mallet) (marimba (5-octave)). Medium difficult. Duration 6:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.17300).
Opposite musical characteristics such as soft and loud, comfort and angular, static and active, hesitant and steadfast are contrastingly employed in this piece.Valse Excentrique is composed as a part of series of pieces written by three composers for Hiromi Kamiya. The composers were required to describe Hiromi's portrait by music. Goto writes: It is difficult to describe a person by just one word. In fact, Hiromi is very serious but sometimes so joyful, prudent but bold, and works extremely hard but enjoys music and life. I focused on the multiplicities of her personality. As a result, opposite musical characteristics such as soft and loud, comfort and angular, static and active, hesitant and steadfast are contrastingly employed in this piece.

stealing a momenta!! by Mark Ford. Marimba Solo. For marimba solo (marimba (5 octave)). Level 5. Book. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.S-MF-STE).
Composer's Notes: Stealing a Moment' was premiered at the Katowice Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland on February 22, 2010. Originally titled 'Stealing a Moment of Forgetfulness', the music contrasts a roaming hesitant theme with a simple melody. The roaming theme represents the routine of our daily lives and the simple melody represents everything beautiful. The simple melody is presented at first as a fragment which grows with each entrance. The roaming theme is gradually altered with each exposure to the simple melody. These themes combine at the end to create a flowing section representing the power of beauty and love in our daily lives. Bringing everything together, this final statement builds to a modulation that rises to a new key as the music spins away into silence. "This advanced 5.0-octave marimba solo has all the makings of a Hollywood cinema story: thought-provoking subject matter, contrasting characters, and patient thematic development. This musical narrative begins with a soft, flittering sixteenth-note idea that leads to a section of simple, yet effective counterpoint. The introductory material sets the stage for the presentation of two independent thematic ideas that are musically woven together to represent, in the composer's words, a contrast of "the routine of our daily lives" and "everything beautiful." While "stealing a moment-" does not call for the rhythmic endurance required by some of Ford's other compositions, this piece presents its own challenges in the form of harmonicallyshifting ostinato ideas in the left hand, and repeated double lateral strokes (in fourths, sixths, and octaves) in the right hand. As the musical narrative progresses, the two thematic ideas continue to interact with each other, influencing the other, and ultimately converge for a musical climax that represents, as stated in the program notes, "the power of beauty and love in our daily lives." Lasting over eight minutes, this composition is well suited for advanced players looking to perform a piece that showcases the musical beauty and sincerity that is achievable on the marimba." - Joshua D. Smith Percussive Notes, March 2011.
