In the late 19th century the cante hondo (deep song), a highly emotional and tragic song cultivated among Spanish prisoners, was adopted by Spanish Gypsies under the name, "cante flamenco", who made it even more florid and expressive. This music modernizes the cante hondo with jazz and popluar harmonies.
