The ability to improvise and create variations within a song is the essence of the guitar work of the great traditional acoustic blues guitarists such as Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Rev. Gary Davis, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. By exploring the ways that chords, melodies, and rhythms work, Woody Mann presents practical and simple ways to create variations in your playing. Woody teaches a new approach to seeing the fretboard and techniques for breaking down chord blocks into smaller pieces and connecting them throughout the fretboard. As he teaches the repertoire of the masters of acoustic blues, he demonstrates how melodies and harmonies can be derived from simple, movable chord shapes. This book is a method for relating the entire fretboard to the basic first position chord shapes that we all learn as beginners and using them to create new chords, melodies, and variations in your music. Studying the songs and concepts that Woody presents in this program will help students to break out of ruts and begin playing up-the-neck without relying on barre chords or scale patterns. Woody's approach to varying melody and bass lines against each other will also help students to develop a more syncopated and stronger picking technique. This simple and effective method allows students to increase their chord vocabulary by relying on logic instead of memorization. Woody Mann had his first schooling as a teenager in the living room of Rev. Gary Davis, the now legendary gospel and ragtime guitarist. Mann soon went on to perform and record with blues masters Son House and Bukka White as well as contemporary innovators including John Fahey. He has recorded extensively, performed throughout the world, and is widely recognized as one of the world's leading teachers and transcribers of acoustic blues music, having taught countless guitarists through his popular books and videos.

Learn five repertoire building songs arranged for the intermediate fingerstyle guitarist. Inspired by Woody Mann's favorite traditional blues tunes, these easy-to-follow arrangements teach a variety of acoustic blues styles and sounds. Each song spotlights a specific technique for developing fingerpicking skills, rhythmic grooves, and dynamics in your playing. Woody illustrates the syncopated fingerpicking of Blind Blake, the single-line style riffs of Lonnie Johnson, the melodic playing in open G tuning of Memphis Minnie, and the unique riffs in standard tuning of Rambling Thomas and Bo Carter. Woody shows how the riffs and techniques can be applied from one tune to another and illustrates practical ways to create variations within a tune. In this fresh approach to teaching, Woody Mann has taken the complex music of the early acoustic guitar innovators and has distilled the sounds into clearly written instrumentals that capture the essence and beauty of the music. Each song chapter includes an introduction, performance, explanation, and slow performance with split screen. Songs include: Along the Alley

A ghost story telling of the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse keepers in the Hebrides. This is a mystery story in the form of a chamber opera. The prologue is set as a court of enquiry into the unexplained disappearance of the three keepers from a lighthouse. Questions are posed by a solo horn, which may sound from among the audience, and three officers give answer. Gradually, they move from straight testimony into fantastical imaginings of evil during a 'flashback' to the lighthouse; but then we snap back to the courtroom. In the main act the three singers become the vanished keepers. They have been together for months, long enough to be fully aware of each other's weaknesses; petty bickerings suggest a relationship which is stable, but liable to become highly unstable at any moment. They sing songs to reduce the tension, Blazes beginning with a rough ballad of street violence, accompanied by violin and banjo. Sandy's song, with cello and out-of-tune upright piano, is a thinly disguised description of sexual bliss, and Arthur's with brass and clarinet, is a tub-thumping hymn. But the songs serve only to resurrect in their minds ghosts from the past, and as the fog descends each of the keepers becomes convinced that he is being claimed by the Beast. They prepare to meet its dazzling eyes, which become the lights of the relief vessel, and the three men reappear as officers, met at the lighthouse only by an infestation of rats. They leave, and at the end the last hours of Blazes, Sandy and Arthur begin to play over again. Vocal score with piano reduction of the instrumental score. Duration c. 1h 25mins.

The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes, but also of violins and oboes; in addition, the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not, for instance, play in the slow movement), so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets, horns, bassoons and low strings. If this is, nevertheless, one of Davies's most open-spirited pieces, that comes partly from the ready flights of the soloist, partly from its glockenspiel accompaniments in the outer movements (replaced by ticking claves in the Adagio), partly from the dancing character of so much of the music, and partly from the harmonic clarity, in a light region not far from C minor.
