The titles in this collection are abstracts from the great repertory of the Standards of Blues. Each title is presented in two ways. The first version of the work is an arrangement for piano with all fingering and figuring included. The second version presents the elementary theme along with the original harmonic figuring which is the raw material used for composing all arrangements. By using these two versions, pianists will be able to analyze the melodic and harmonic improvements added to the piano arrangement, as well as practice their own improvisations on the themes. Piano teachers will also find in this volume a good basic repertory to introduce Blues to their students. The playful aspect is added to this anthology by way of the midi-files which accompany the mixte CD (CD audio and CD rom) offering the possibility to listen to the pieces in midi by using the sound card of a computer. In addition, it is possible to change the sounds and the tempis with appropriate equipment (e.g. sequencer, score editors and others). You can also easily play in loop passages. Other options are offered by today's different softwares. We wish you an excellent journey into Blues Standards world and hope it will bring you true pianist pleasure.

King Arthur was the only one of Purcell's professionally produced operas to have been designed as a semi-opera; the others were all adaptations of earlier plays. Dryden made a real attempt to integrate the music into the drama, but since he ascribed to the dramatic conventions of the period which virtually confined music to allegorical or supernatural beings and their worshippers, or servants, shepherds and similar characters, the main action mostly occurs in the spoken sections, and even the two singing characters, Philidel and Grimbald speak more than they sing.

Composer's Notes: The last few years I have become increasingly involved in some peculiar mathematical formulas called fractals. These formulas, used in the fast growing field of Chaos theory, are relatively simple, but they generate fascinating and surprisingly organic patterns when shown graphically on a computer screen, or played as music. One should think that such a mathematical approach would lead to sterile and 'theoretical' music. The sound world of 'Stonewave', however, is not one you would associate with math books. The steady, insistent pulse, and the use of sequences put squarely up against each other or divided by long rests suggest an invisible ritual. A ritual for what? Well then, let it be a ritual for the exorcism of some 'evil spirits' which now ride our part of the world under the name of Liberalism, making people the servants of the Market Forces instead of vice versa. 'Stonewave' is therefore an incantation, as it seems that only divine forces can save European culture from a political system that proclaims the Jungle Law as the guiding principle in social and cultural life. This is primarily a collection of 108 dirty songs. It is customary at this point to make some pious reference to the Ulysses and Lady Chatterley's Lover court decisions. No such defense will appear here. The songs are not great literature, and if they can be defended, it must be on other grounds. Most of the songs here are funny. It is hard to find a ribald song that is not humorous. Some of these songs are straight wish-fulfillment, some are incredibly nasty and disgust even the relatively shock-proof editors. But there is also a goodly number of sprightly, good-humored, tuneful, and (we believe) funny songs, some of them fit for the most maidenly ear. Arranged for top line with chord symbols.

An original and exciting collection of anthems and other choral pieces written for the Orthodox Church and inspired by the Church in Russia, selected by Ralph Allwood. Partly because of the re-emergence of the Church in the former Soviet Union, interest in Christian musical sources alternative to the great body of the Anglican and other Western Christian traditions has grown sharply in recent years. Though the works presented here may be unfamiliar, they are all masterly. Designed to appeal to choirs of various levels, the collection includes a Kontakion and Ikos for the funeral service, anthems by Great Russian Romantics: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Grechaninov; and composers from our age: Stravinsky, Schnittke, or Arvo Part speaking for a tradition outside the Orthodox Church, as well as settings of the Lord's Prayer in both Russian and English by John Tavener.

Quoting Saariaho: The title evokes the two gestures which are at the origin of the work: on the one hand the pattern which I call spinning tops turning around on the one spot or undergoing changes, and on the other, timeless moments, centered on the sound color and texture. The entire piece unfolds either around or between these two gestures. I chose to re-tune the instrument in order to personalise the harmonic writing: the fifths are replaced by structures favoring major sixths and minor thirds. Challenged by this scodatura, the sonority of Spins and Spells reminds me of the music and the instrumental colors of another age, far older than those of the cello that we know, although seen and transformed again through my own universe.

Terrestre' was commissioned by Eleanor Eisenmenger in honour of Kaija Saariaho's 50th birthday. It is based on the second movement of the composer's Flute concert 'Aile du Songe', of which the she says: 'The first section of Terrestre, 'Oiseau dansant', introduces a deep contrast with the other material of the concerto. It refers to an Aboriginal tale in which a virtuosic dancing bird teaches a whole village how to dance. The second section is a synthesis of all the previous aspects, then the sound of the Flute slowly fades away...' This version is for Solo Flute, Percussion, Harp, Violin and Cello; this is the Score of this work. Parts available for purchase separately: CH66297-01

The title of this piece is taken from the late astronomer and educator Carl Sagan's book Cosmos (1980). Sagan was a great voice in the pursuit of knowledge and reason, an invaluable force in the struggle against ignorance and superstition. His vast historical knowledge and sensitive ear for the poetic also allowed him to adorn his various texts with short quotations from original folklore through history, quotations which I have used as mental and spiritual appetizers, heading some of the movements in this piece. Serenade also reaches out to other inspirational sources, such as William Shakespeare, Joseph Conrad and British science-writer John Gribbin, another great educator and popularizer. The Darwin quotation heading the second movement was also found in Sagan's book Cosmos (it is originally from Charles Darwin: On The Origin Of Species) and so was the quotation about The Backbone of the Night. The Ku-Fu-quotation can be found in Sagan's last great work THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD (1995).

Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901) was a prolific composer in almost every field, but he found in the organ the medium best fitted to his genius and temperament. This seems to be proved by the fact that his reputation as an organ composer has grown and is now firmly established, whereas his position in other branches has declined. His twenty sonatas and numerous other short pieces make up one of the most important contributions to the organ repertory. It may indeed be claimed that in the maintainance of a high level of quality and interest throughout a long series of works of both large and small scale, his position as an organ composer is second only to that of Bach.
