Greek Folk Dances captures the excitement of two dance styles the composer encountered while on holiday in the Greek Islands - the Hasapiko and the Syrto. The first is slow and dramatic dance that plods along showcasing the solo clarinet, while the second is a blazing fast fire dance that alternates between 4/4, 3/4 and 7/8.The inspiration for these dances came from my first proper cruise in 2007, when we traveled around Greek islands and spent a week on the island of Corfu. Traditional music was all around us and we had the chance to watch and take part in some dancing. I began to formulate mu own ideas into two of the dance styles I had encountered - the Hasapiko and the Syrto. The Hasapiko is a butcher dance where the dancers put their arms around each other's shoulders and move in a slow side to side motion, dragging the insides of their feet on the ground. The music often speeds up, but not necessarily. The Syrto is much faster, again with arms around shoulders. Often a solo dancer breaks away, doing acrobatic dance tricks in the middle of the circle. I observed solo fire dancing among flames sprayed onto the ground using some flammable liquid. I have tried to capture some of the excitement of this. The Syrto can be in 3/4 time or 7/8 time, or a mixture of the two. I have used all three options in a gradual speeding up process charging towards a hugely energetic ending.

McCarthy was asked to compose a piece that would be musically challenging for the group and appealing to audiences. Thus, such a work was written by McCarthy that celebrates uniquely American music popularized by American dance crazes. The Unsquare Dance pairs the tuba and xylophone in a sophisticated ~hoe-downr with frequent meter changes creating music that is ~un-square.r Latina is patterned after the ~Lambada," the dance made famous in the film "Dirty Dancing." Latin rhythms combine with a Baroque style canon. Serenade recalls the ~40,s style slow dance with a Tommy Dorsey-like trombone solo and a musical language of modem jazz. J~ borrows from the 1950ts be bop era and the like of Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan and Stan Kenton with another tuba and xylophone duet. ROKl71 is unabashedly dedicated to the composer~s favorite rock/funk group, Tower of Power. With the all important drum solo, this movement combines the elements of jazz, rock and funk so prevalent in the 70,s styles of groups such as Tower of Power, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and Chicago.

Schofield for the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America. As the title suggests, the composition is based on the familiar patriotic tune "America." The piece is organized in three major sections that develop material from the song. Following an introduction, an original melody, lyrical and flowing in character with only a vague reference to the tune, is stated first in the horns and then throughout the ensemble. The middle section is driven by motivic fragments interspersed with intense percussion. The fragments coalesce into recognizable phrases from the tune, building to a peak. The music then transitions to the third and final section, a developed setting of "America" in its entirety. The piece ends with a glorious statement of the theme in the full ensemble.
