Band Music. Grade 2. Score only. Duration 5:10. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10061). Kings of Old is the second installment of an unofficial "Lord of the Rings" triptych. Originally titled To Look Upon the Kings of Old, it is an allusion to a line of dialogue in the first film, where the future king of the Western realm passes by boat through a landscape populated by enormous monuments to past monarchs. He says to another character, "Long have I desired to look upon the kings of old." I was struck by the sense that it must be wonderful to live in a world where leaders are known to be wise, benevolent, and trustworthy.

Panopticon by Kimberly Archer. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1/2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1/2, Trombone 1/2, Euphonium, (Baritone T.C.). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 3:20. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10141). A Panopticon (literally "all-seeing") is a Greek prison designed so that the entire interior is visible from a single vantage point. The modal flavor of the work is perhaps reminiscent of ancient Greek music, but the piece itself is meant to depict only a prison of the imagination, in any culture. There are three distinct musical gestures: imprisonment (which represents the bulk of the piece), a jail break sequence (starting at m. 64), and a nose-thumbing gesture at the end, as the escaped prisoner looks back on the panopticon from his/her newfound freedom.--Kimberly Archer.

Seconds, Please! by Gregory Danner. For Concert Band (Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Bb Clarinet 1/2, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, F Horn, Trombone, Baritone B.C., (Baritone T.C.), Tuba, Timpani, Percussion 1 (bells, xylophone), Percussion 2 (tambouri). Band Music. Grade 2. Score only. Duration 2:05. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10261). Seconds, Please! is a fun piece in march style that emphasizes the musical interval of the second. As musicians know, "seconds" are two notes that are next to each other in sound. When heard together, they give a little more "bite" to the harmony than more traditional chords. All melodic phrases and nearly every harmony in the piece focus on this interval. In playing Seconds, Please! don't shy away from the dissonance but play it with confidence. "Crunchy" notes are fun to play! Equal balance between the instruments that are playing the harmonic seconds will be an important consideration. Above all, let the music be lively and energetic.- Greg Danner.

The Hour of Wolves by Kimberly Archer. For Concert Band (Flute 1/2, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1/2, Horn in F, Trombone 1/2, Baritone B.C., (Baritone T.C.), Tuba, Timpani, Percussion 1(Chimes, Bells), P). Band Music. Grade 3. Score only. Duration 4:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10271). The Hour of Wolves is the third installment of an unofficial "Lord of the Rings" triptych. The title is based on a line of dialogue from the third film, when the king of the decimated Western army gives a speech at the enemy's gates, hoping to rally his troops one last time: "There may come a time - an hour of wolves and shattered shields - when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it will not be this day!" The image of an "hour of wolves" struck me as particularly vivid and dark, well-suited for a work that exploits the harmonic minor scale, deep timbres, and occasionally violent rhythmic gestures.

The conductor, Karen Cole, asked that I write a work to exploit her large and active percussion section, along with their brand new marimba. The work is not a traditional jig, beyond its time signature, but does have a consistent upbeat, dance-like feel. It also encourages students to whistle, cheer, clap hands, stomp feet, and otherwise participate in the youthful, celebratory character of the music.

In spite of displaying remarkable musical gifts Chabrier (1841-1894) was sent by his father to study law and in due course, having taken a law degree, went to work in his native French Ministry of the Interior, stay there for eighteen years.During the whole of this time he was developing his real interests in music and painting, including composing operettas and music for the piano.Following a holiday in Spain in 1883, Chabrier wrote a rhapsody for orchestra based on Spanish tunes he had heard. This became Espana; it achieved immediate acclaim and is still his most performed work."Joyeuse Marche" (originally called Marche Francaise) was written in 1888. It exudes Chabrier's rhythmical exuberance, spontaneity and wit, bringing pleasure and joy to performers and listeners alike. Truly a march which lives up to its title.

The Captain General. (Quick March). By F. Vivian Dunn. Band Music. Grade 3.5. Score only. Duration 2:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11196). On the 19th of December 1949, HM King George VI, then the Captain General Royal Marines, dined with the Officers of the Corps at the Savoy in London. Lieutenant Colonel Sir Vivian Dunn composed this march especially for the performance on this historic occasion by the Royal Marines orchestra Portsmouth Division. He later transcribed the work for military band. The euphonium part at letter D shows optional small notes, an octave above the original. At the first run-through of the march, the euphonium player of the Royal Marines Band, feeling that the higher octave "made more musical sense," and in the belief that the composer was not present, played it that way. To his delight - and relief - he was congratulated by Sir Vivian and told to "keep it in."Ever since euphonium players in British Royal Marines Bands tend to play the passage at the higher octave.

Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 3:45. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11209). My intention was to begin this piece with the feeling of anticipation and excitement which might be experienced when setting out on a free fall adventure. This gives way to the more contemplative mood of the aerial panorama before returning to the excitement of the jump."Freefall" was commissioned in 1998 with the aid of funds provided by Gower Music International. Having organized tours for bands for many years, Gower wished to provide bands planning a tour with an added dimension to their touring projects.

Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 5:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11256). Rossini wrote his opera, The Barber of Seville, in less than three weeks, a remarkable achievement even for a 24 year old!No matter that the first performance, given in Rome in 1816 was hissed, The Barber of Seville offered abundant evidence that here was a composer possessed of a gift for melody and, no less, a sense of humor.Figaro is the town barber, an ideal setting in which to indulge his traits as a wily trickster. In the opera, Largo al Factotum provides Figaro with the opportunity to declaim his penchant for intrigue. Two suitors are pursuing one lady, Rosina, a situation much to Figaro's liking, allowing him to indulge in plot and counter-plot.Vocally, Largo al Factotum calls for fast flowing verbal gymnastics which, in this instrumental version, transfers to the nimble usage of tongue and fingers by a euphonium soloist supported by an alert accompaniment.

Partita by Edward Gregson. Arranged by Edward Gregson. For Concert Band (Full Score, 1st Flute (Piccolo), 2nd flute, 1st Oboe, 2nd Oboe (opt), Bb clarinet 1/2/3, Eb alto Clarinet (opt), Bb Bass Clarinet, 1st Bassoon, 2nd Bassoon (opt), 1st Also Sax, 2nd Alto Sax (opt), Bb Tenor Sax, Eb Baritone Sax (opt), Bb Cornet 1/2/3, Bb T). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 10:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11210). 'Partita' was originally composed for brass band in 1973. The work is in three movements, and uses material based on the 13th century plainsong 'Dies Irae". the opening Intrada is sombre. the second movement is a 'chorale and variations. the chorale melody follows the main outline of the plainsong. the five variations are varied in mood and intensity. the final March is much happier in mood and has a lyrical tune in the middle first heard on horns. However, references to the 'Dies Irae' are still apparent and the final bars of the work contain a quote from the opening movement.

Pavane (World Cup Theme '98). By Geoffrey Brand. Arranged by Geoffrey Brand. For Concert Band (Full Score, Piccolo (opt), 1st Flute , 2nd flute, 1st Oboe, 2nd Oboe (opt), Bb clarinet 1/2/3, Eb alto Clarinet (opt), Bb Bass Clarinet (opt), 1st Bassoon, 2nd Bassoon (opt), 1st Also Sax, 2nd Alto Sax (opt), Bb Tenor Sax, Eb Baritone Sax (opt), Bb Cornet). Band Music. Grade 3.5. Score only. Duration 6:10. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11211). The Pavane - an old stately dance of Italian or Spanish origin - can be traced back to the 16th century. French composer Gabriels Faure's Pavane, written in 1886 for orchestra for a series of concerts in Paris, exudes charm, gentility even; the music flows easily yet with a sure sense of direction. In 1919 the composer reused it in his one-act divertissement Masques and Bergamasques. Faure was much revered during his lifetime as a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire for many years together with his connection with church music as an organist. In concert performance the Pavane benefits from being allowed to unfold at its own unhurried pace and in its (mostly) own quiet way.

Prelude for an Occasion by Edward Gregson. Arranged by Geoffrey Brand. For Concert Band (Flute 1/Piccolo, Flute 2, Oboe 1, Oboe 2*, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Eb Alto Clarinet*, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Eb Alto Saxophone 1, Eb Alto Saxophone 2*, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone*, F Horn 1/2, F Horn 3/4*, Bb Cornet). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 4:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11053). "Prelude for an Occasion" might be described as a "curtain raiser." Its purpose is to set a mood which this Prelude does by bursting into a fanfare, always a good way to arrest attention. A quicker tempo Allegro moderato follows, comprising a short bouncing figure answered by a solid response from the lower instruments and introducing a lively solo on the clarinet, marked Giocoso (playfully, merrily). The interval of a falling 5th is important, echoes by a similar response from other instruments, which then gives way to a broad melody, played canabile (in a singing style).Rhythmic bi-play, trombone glissandi and a light-hearted obbligato, all add to the merriment. The opening fanfare returns in extended form, and a final flourish brings the Prelude to a triumphant ending.

Band Music. Pioneer Band Series. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 5:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11213). Sunrise - a song to the sun, music to be warmed by.From its softly stroked opening timpani rhythm, setting the mood for a solo horn to emerge and expand as it makes its tonal journey serenely from East to West, the music is never hurried. A dynamic build to high-noon is followed by a return to the quieter sounds as the end of the day is reached and the soft rhythms of the opening are again heard.Altogether the composer has created a wonderfully evocative framework into which performers and listeners can place their own pictures.

The themes are derived from the well-known haunting song "Ca' the yowes." The horn calls and off-stage percussion sound of a distant battle and it gradually comes closer. The centre section creates a mood of reconciliation with a dreamy Alto Saxophone solo. The last section now looks ahead with optimism and various bright dance themes appear based on traditional Scottish reel tunes, one of which is a two-part vocal scat section The piece then heads for its conclusion including a full statement of the main theme.

Band Music. Platinum Band Series. Grade 3. Score only. Duration 5:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11192). In June 1997 I was in New York and had a free weekend. On Sunday morning I was awoken early by a great deal of banging and saw that barriers and roadblocks had been erected throughout Central Park. Why?I soon heard the answer: a great parade. When the Americans put together a parade they really mean it! This one lasted 3 hours and brought the center of New York to a standstill. Bands, dancers and choirs marched past in celebration of the Jewish faith.New York Parade is completely original but its starting point in my imagination was a marching band, a choir and Broadway. The marching band starts in the distance, passes by and as it moves away we hear the next block of performers singing, almost chanting, a hymn (called "Jewish Song"). The groups suddenly turn into Broadway, as a song from an imaginary show intervenes but then the band and choir return in counterpoint and all three themes come together.

During a visit to the town of Saintes in South West France in the summer of 2003, I spent some time in the Roman amphitheatre there. It is a well preserved arena and I imagined what it must have been like to take part in the gladiatorial games. 'Roman times' is based on these images with the opening grand procession and its amazing mixture of Mediterranean peoples. The middle movement is an old fashioned love ballad followed by gladiators fighting in a very spirited battle to death or victory.
