Following on from Bob Ashworth's brilliant 'Horn Warm-Ups' (EME635) this A5 booklet offers more demanding challenges for horn players: exploring a wider range, pushing some technical demands and offering ways to practise 'difficult' bits. Some of the exercises have an obvious reference to standard orchestral excerpts on which to apply the same concepts - some excerpts are given briefly as examples. The exercises are designed to promote (and maintain) richness of sound, flexibility, accuracy, stamina, creativity, musicality, intonation, consistency and general awareness.

An arrangement created by the composer from the third movement of 'Salt of the Earth', a Concerto for Tuba & Brass Band, commissioned by Les Neish, premiered by Les & Foden's Band at the RNCM Festival of Brass 2008, and recorded on the award-winning CDs 'Salt of the Earth' (World of Brass SFZ 150) & 'Double Trouble' (World of Brass SFX 152). 'Salt of the Earth Finale' is scored for Brass Band and was arranged especially for Foden's Band recording of the 'A World Within' CD in February 2010. The CD was released in September 2010 at the British Open Brass Band Championship at Symphony Hall, Birmingham & awarded British Bandsman CD of the Year 2010. 'Salt of the Earth Finale' is proving popular with other instruments, being recorded on the CD 'The Bad Tempered Flute - the Flute Music of Andy Scott' (Nimbus Alliance), included in the playalong book by Andy Scott & Mark White 'Access All Areas', and performed by amongst others, the Tempest Flute Trio & Andy Scott's SaxAssault." In a way this arrangement for tuba and piano is a case of coming full circle with Salt of the Earth Finale, in that I have arranged it for Les Neish to premiere at ITEC in Linz, Austria, in June 2012, especially pleasing as Les commissioned and funded the original Concerto!"

The tuba version of Deep Blue was arranged by the composer for Les Neish, to premiere at ITEC 2012 in Linz, Austria. Originally scored for tenor saxophone & piano, Deep Blue was commissioned and funded by Alex Bradbury and dedicated to Australian saxophonist Erin Royer. Andy writes “Australia and its beautiful coast and surrounding seas holds a strange fascination for me. I imagined stunning underwater scenes when writing this piece of music; deep and murky waters, the sun shining into the shallower areas, fish suddenly darting past, silvery flashes of light, the unexpected around every corner, whilst time itself seems to be in slow motion”. The word ‘blue’ also conjures other images; in particular the colour itself, and also the association with jazz & blues.

Scored for solo tuba 'Eighteen' is a dynamic exploration of rhythm, energy, angular intervals and melodic development. Originally commissioned for solo saxophone, by friends and family of Spencer Moran, to celebrate his eighteenth birthday, Eighteen has also proved popular with flute players, being recorded by the virtuoso Andy Findon on the CD 'The Bad Tempered Flute - the Flute Music of Andy Scott (Nimbus Alliance). The tuba version of Eighteen was arranged for and premiered by Les Neish, at ITEC in Linz, Austria in June 2012. A strong internal pulse is the key to an effective performance of 'Eighteen', the rests being as important as the notes. Pay careful attention to given dynamics and articulation, which all add to the overall shape and form of the piece. 'Funky & Hard Edged' is the initial stylistic guide, indicating that 'Eighteen' should be played with a 'take no prisoners' attitude!

On 28th February 2012 a Landmark Poem from Lemn Sissay was unveiled in The Atrium, University Place, Manchester. ‘Let There Be Peace’ is a call for calm, or as Lemn says ‘a press release for peace’. In 1998 Lemn & Andy collaborated to create the work ‘My Mountain Top’, which is performed worldwide & has been recorded to date on nine CDs. Andy’s piece ‘And Everything Is Still’, initially scored for flute & piano, took its title from one of Lemn’s poems from ‘The Emperor’s Watchmaker’. Andy writes; “I find Lemn’s words inspiring, and in some cases the right vehicle for me to try and capture the spirit of his words via music. The writing of this piece coincided with the launch of ‘Let There Be Peace’ in Manchester, it all fitted well conceptually as I was writing this piece for the Manchester based euphonium player Aaron Rivkin. Aaron had won the Open Class in the inaugural Foden’s Band Solo Competition. In my role as Composer in Residence I was to compose a short piece for the competition winner as part of the prize.” The music mirrors the form of the poem, three main sections, with euphonium cadenzas linking these sections. An overall yearning for tranquility is tested in the cadenzas, with an insistency and potential conflict, however calm prevails. World Premiere given by Aaron Rivkin & Iva Navratova at the International Tuba & Euphonium Conference 2012 (Artistic Director Steven Mead), Brucknerhaus, Linz, Austria on 25th June 2012.
