This dazzling Trumpet section showcase is reminiscent of the music of Bill Chase. You'll need strong players, but the top note in the lead Trumpet is only a written "C" and the unison line is quite playable, so it should be accessible to many high school groups. The band will love digging into this one-it's got attitude!

This freewheeling chart was written for the Penfield Commission Project in New York. The cool, understated first chorus sets the stage for a swinging ensemble section that melts into the 3/4 development section. The rhythm section and Trumpet soloist set up a half-time shuffle before the ensemble shout chorus.

This new composition redefines the jazz ensemble ballad. Exotic timbres and vertical sonorities evoke cerulean blue colors that make this true "chamber music" for your ensemble. Using effects drawn from Romantic music of the late nineteenth century, muted Brass, saxophones, guitar, bass and drums combine to create lush backdrops for the showcased tenor sax and piano soloists.

Of course! If you do any concerts at elementary schools or are looking for the perfect way to showcase each section in your jazz ensemble, this composition is a must. Starting with the bass, the narrator introduces each of the rhythm section instruments; then the alto, tenor and baritone saxes, followed by the trombones and finally, the trumpets. The styles range from a New Orleans "second line" beat to a bossa nova to a great "Killer Joe" groove. All of it is tied together beautifully with the narration and is sure to be a highlight of any program. The narrator does not need to be a musician, so enlist the help of your principal, superintendent, board member or music parent. Performance time is approximately 7 minutes.

Many pieces have been written using "rhythm" changes, but you've never heard anything like this! Covering everything from straight-ahead swing to a funky half-time shuffle, this new composition makes an ideal festival opener or closer. The head is written for tenor saxophone and trumpet and both are featured in the solo section. The shout section has some punchy brass trading fours with the saxophones.

Beautiful muted brass and thick saxophone chords provide the backdrop for solo piano in this lush ballad. The set comes with two piano parts. One part is completely written out (including the solo section) and the other has just chord symbols in the improvised sections. (5/5/4/4).

Recognized worldwide as a composer and arranger of the highest caliber, Carl Strommen has had music performed by everyone from top New York and Los Angeles recording artists to middle school choirs and bands. He is known for his ability to create music that will work in just about any situation, and we think you'll agree that this new composition for young jazz ensemble is right on the money. This great new piece at medium-easy level is in the swinging tradition of Billy Byers and Quincy Jones. Trumpet and tenor saxophone kick things off in an "easy 2" feel with a blues-tinged saxophone versus brass passage following. There are written solos for tenor saxophone (optional trombone) and trumpet. Carl has also included a section without the rhythm section to showcase your wind players to the fullest. The suggested minimum required instrumentation for the music in this series is 2 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums.

In this sparkling new arrangement of a classic tune the spotlight is on the full ensemble. The trumpets lead off with the melody backed solidly by the saxes and trombones. The next chorus features the full band playing a soft yet punchy harmonized line in the Basie style. There is also a saxophone soli and a nice "winds only" unison section. The suggested minimum required instrumentation for the music in this series is 2 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums. Parts are included for standard instrumentation (5/4/4/4) and all charts include a CD with a full version and a solo practice track.

Your band will love the jazz-rock groove of this new piece! As jazz spread north in the '30s and '40s from New Orleans, Kansas City became a major jazz "hub," and this composition reflects the high energy and excitement of those times in a contemporary style. Driving rhythms and punchy ensemble riffs will make this one an audience favorite! The suggested minimum required instrumentation for the music in this series is 2 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums. Bob's sophisticated harmonic palette is evident in this lush trombone ballad. There are two solo parts provided for the soloist. One part has only chord changes in the improvised sections, and the other part includes a suggested written solo. This piece was commissioned by Larry Kisor for the super Sioux City North High School Band.

The unique polyphonic technique that Fred uses so well in many of his compositions really makes this new piece sparkle. After the opening section of intertwining, syncopated lines in the ensemble, the saxes take over with sustained brass harmonic underpinning. The wide dynamic contrasts that are integral to the piece and the focus on rhythmic independence between parts make "Aim High" an excellent festival selection.

Work Song is one of the best jazz classics ever in a minor key. The original Nat Adderley recording is the starting point for this new arrangement. After the first time through the head (by the trumpets and altos, of course!), the stop time section from the original is used with the harmonized melody. There is a solid shout chorus that leads to a soft ensemble passage before the solo written for alto saxophone.

This latest offering from Fred includes all the elements of his writing that have made him a composer recognized around the world. The dramatic ensemble opening will assure your audience that this composition is something special. The hypnotic Latin flavor is set by the rhythm section, and as layer after layer of lines and pads are added the chart builds excitement to the highest level. There is a tenor solo that calls for a solid improviser, but guitar or trumpet may be substituted if desired. The Deer Valley High School Jazz Ensemble premiered this piece at the 2006 Midwest Band and Orchestra clinic. (Trumpet 1 to written C, Trombone 1 to B-flat. Includes a Conga Drum part.).

Ike is one of the most "happening" bass players on the New York scene today, and this creative piece demonstrates that his writing chops are equally strong. (It doesn't hurt that his dad, Fred Sturm, wrote the arrangement!) The swinging lines in the winds over a well written hip-hop groove in the rhythm section make this a very appealing, modern-sounding chart. Make no mistake, though-this piece is jazz through and through! There are extended solos for tenor saxophone and trumpet with extensive ideas for improvisation provided. (Trumpet 1 to written C with one D at the end, Trombone to F.).

This piece was commissioned for the 2007 Wisconsin State Honors jazz ensemble, so the title is especially appropriate. (Cabeza de queso translates to "cheese head.") There is a warm introductory chorale by the winds which leads to the samba groove of the chart. You'll need a solid piano player for the most effective performance of this piece, and there is also an important percussion part that complements with the drum set. Fred provides extensive ideas for improvisation for your alto soloist, but tenor, trumpet or vibes may be substituted if an alto improviser is not available. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone 1 to B-flat. The written sections of the piano part may be doubled with vibes or marimba.).

The original Yankee Doodle Dandy, George M. Cohan, was a major figure in the development of Broadway, but his classic tune never sounded so good! Master arranger Carl Strommen uses his creative harmonic language and perfect sense of jazz style to turn this Broadway march into a medium slow swing chart that uses the elements of the modern jazz ensemble to the fullest. The arrangement leads off with the band playing the first chorus in the mezzo piano range which is one of the reasons that this is a terrific selection to follow a loud "burner." The saxophones get a good workout in their soli, and there is solo space for tenor saxophone and trumpet. (Written solos are included.).

This slow "down and dirty" 12/8 blues has it all! Lines drenched in triplets, trumpets with plunger mutes, a stop time section with wailing saxophones, more diminished chords per square inch than "regular" blues

This driving 12/8 Afro-Cuban chart is an excellent selection to showcase the ensemble and an alto or tenor saxophone soloist. Following the dazzling ensemble introduction, a combo of alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet and (optional) guitar have the statement of the melody with muted brass in the background. A saxophone soli leads to the solo section which begins in swing and then returns to the original feel.

Alternating between Latin and swing, this impressive new piece is reminiscent of the way jazz players usually perform On Green Dolphin Street. The opening Latin section is over a rhythmic ostinato and pedal F, which makes the release to swing even more effective. The solos for alto saxophone and trumpet are one chorus each (but could easily be extended) using the same Latin/swing format as the head. Following the solo section is a saxophone soli and an exciting "breakdown" section. Some wide dynamic contrasts in the final ensemble section take the chart out. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone to A-flat, Trombone 4 is for bass trombone.).
