Camille Saint-Saëns composed his two Romances for Horn for two of the most respected French horn players of the time: Opus 67 in E major from 1866 is dedicated to Henri Chaussier; Opus 36 in F major from 1874 was written for Henri Garigue. Despite the illustrious recipients, they are not virtuosic showpieces but – as the term Romance suggests – short “Songs without words”. Alongside the orchestral version, Saint-Saëns also prepared a piano accompaniment for chamber music performances. The first editions even also had an alternative part for Violoncello, on which this edition is based.

This collection of solos composed by François Dauverné is unique in that they are among the very first solos ever written for the valved trumpet, culled from Collection de VI Solos pour la Trompette Chromatique. Dauverné was the first trumpet teacher at the famed Paris Conservatory and maintained that post for thirty-five years. He was also the teacher of such notable students as Jean-Baptiste Arban and Louis Saint-Jacome. As a performer, Dauverné was first trumpet in the Paris Opera Orchestra for over thirty years. Dauverné is credited for being one of the first individuals to play on the valved trumpet in a public performance, and convinced such composers as Berlioz, Rossini, and Meyerbeer to write for the instrument. This collection of six solos was originally composed for solo trumpet and chamber orchestra. Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Dakota, Ronnie Ingle has meticulously transcribed and edited these groundbreaking works for solo trumpet, and has made available here for the first time a modern edition for solo trumpet and piano. When Beethoven visited the director of music at the cathedral in Linz, Franz Xaver Glöggl, in autumn 1812, the latter asked his guest to "compose socalled Equali for 4 trombones for All Souls’ Day [2 November]”. Beethoven readily complied – and it was to be his own funeral music. For in 1827 the Equali were sung in an arrangement for male choir as a “dirge for Beethoven’s funeral procession”. The original instrumental version is today a core work in the trombonist’s repertoire. Henle's Urtext edition is based on the musical text in the Beethoven Complete Edition and contains a score and single parts (both in the original C and in modern bass clef).

This edition is more user-friendly than the others currently available. The accompanying CD provides piano accompaniments as well as samples from recordings of the Neruda, Haydn and Hummell concerti with kind permission of Hyperion Records and Crispian Steele-Perkins. J.G.B. Neruda (1711-1780) was typical of 18th century musicians, travelling and studying in various parts of Eastern Europe and finally settling in Dresden (1750-1780) in the Electoral (chapel) orchestra, where he was salaried as a violinist and occasional composer. This concerto was originally composed for a Corno da Caccia (hunting horn), presumed to be something of a hybrid between the natural horn and natural trumpet, but has been borrowed by modern trumpet players and is now firmly fixed in the Classical trumpet repertoire. This edition is intended to be more user-friendly than the others currently available: there is a much easier (and dare I say, more stylistic) piano accompaniment - any doubling of the solo part has been removed, voicing simplified and my premise has been to imagine what it might have been before it was orchestrated, rather than trying to cram in every last piece of orchestral detail. Suggested cuts have been indicated which give a short introduction to each movement, perfect for auditions, recitals or exams. However, the bar numbers still tally with the longer original versions, which are included should they be required. The dynamics and articulation which I have added incorporate the weight of opinion in current editions and recordings, offering more guidance than 'scholarly' editions, without being over-prescriptive. There is an appendix with suggested interpretation of trills. Listening to as many different recordings as possible is the best way to assimilate good trills. The accompanying CD provides piano accompaniments and observes the suggested cuts. See page 23 for full track listing. There is free software available online (eg. speedshifter on the ABRSM website) which enables you to change the speed of a CD should you wish to practise slower, or indeed faster. The Neruda Concerto is often considered to be a sibling of the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, which are also available in this series published by Spartan Press.
