Mirror is a one movement piece for oboe and piano from the pen of Vincenzo Sorrentino that makes the most of the crisp articulation of the instrument. Syncopated rhythms and modern harmonies add spice to this piece.
Requiring nimble fingerwork (particularly in the demisemiquaver passages) and some stamina (142 bars long with few rests), this is a piece for the more able player that would make a great addition to the concert platform.

Solo Bass Saxophone. Also composed at the World Sax Congress, Rumblings features the baritone's big brother!
A melodic legato section opens the work. This leads into a small riff that develops into a full blown funk pattern that explodes into a longer phrased solo section. The riff then fades away into a modified recap of the opening section that fades away.
A chance for one of the rarer saxophones to get some exposure!!

Solo Baritone Saxophone. Composed at the World Saxophone Congress 2012, Musings brings the baritone to the front of the stage.
Each of the three sections shows a different side of the instrument - the first is cheeky, the second is a legato melodic section, and the finale is a highland romp!
Using the full range of the instrument from top F down to bottom A, this is a piece for the baritone specialist!

Mask is full blooded concert piece for flute and piano by Vincenzo Sorrentino. The piano part ripples away while the flute soars and flies over the top. With fast, complex rhythms and wide-ranging rich harmonies, this piece shimmers like a jewel in the sun.
Reaching the dizzy heights of top C, this is one for the serious player.

Saxophone Quartet – AATT. Written for two alto saxes and two tenor saxes, this is simpler in style that Phil's other quartets.
Played to a driving beat with interest in all parts, some simpler syncopation adds rhythmic interest. Still using his rich chromatic harmonies, but using more standard phrasing and sequences, this would be suitable for players of about grade 4 upwards.
Ideal for a slightly more advanced group class.

Instruments: Saxophone, Woodwinds
A suite of 4 character pieces for alto flute and piano. Each movement lives up to it's title: 'Flight' explores the full range of the instrument with nimble fingers required for the many semiquaver runs.
'Plaintive' is mournful and melancholic, whilst 'Edgewise' explores the rhythmic possibilities of a 5/4 time signature. The last movement ' Radiance' has an improvisatory feel to it.
All with the characteristic lush harmonies that are winning Phil more and more fans all the time. A great addition to the alto flute concert repertoire.

Across The Moon II, scored for Flute Quartet - four concert flutes. Flowing lower parts support two melodic upper parts that float serenely above them, with some almost oriental touches to the harmony.
Alternating between D minor and A major, flute 1 soars up to top B flat while the two lower parts have frequent low C's and C sharps. A nice concert item for players of grade 4-6 standard.

The Waltzer And One Four All, two more saxophone quintets from Phillip Rawle, scored for SATTB or SAATB
£10.00
Instruments: Saxophone, Woodwinds
Two saxophone quintets in a rich jazz ballad style. Using the standard jazz band line up of 2 alto, 2 tenor and 1 baritone sax, Quintessence I and II explore the lush chord voicings that only such a close knit group of instruments can create.
Although slow, these pieces explore the whole range of all instruments, and pass through some fairly expterem keys (C#/F# major at one point) making them more of a challenge for advanced players of grade 7 upwards.

This is a highly unique arrangement by Rebecca Faith. Its features are laid back jazzy chords and syncopated rhythms within a 6/8 structure. There is frequent use of clashing seconds in the harmony, but the familiar melody is prominent and not lost. This piece has five clear sections: a verse of the melody, a piano solo, another verse of the melody, a flute solo, then a final rendition of the melody - but here the flute continues to maintain an experimental feel, combining the verse and solo sections to conclude. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. These beautiful arrangements require work on the part of both flautist and pianist, as with a demanding accompaniment they are very much a duo. The majority are for the advanced flautist, minimum grade 6-7 standard, as there are some complicated rhythms, flutter tonguing and technically challenging jazzy-style passages. Highly recommended and well received by audiences there is nothing else available like them, and so these challenging yet thoroughly enjoyable arrangements fill a gap in the market and are an effective and welcome addition to the repertoire, providing some festive music with a rather different flavour, away from the usual standard melody with accompaniment. The collection of 10 Christmas Carols was written for the flute and piano duo 'Tranquillo', who recorded them as their debut album 'Tranquillo Christmas' in 2010, a CD that has attracted some excellent reviews and can be purchased for £10 (plus P&P) from www.tranquilloduo.com
"This is a jazzed up version of the traditional carol, with jazz solos for both parts, giving both the pianist and flautist an opportunity to show off their skills! It is a lot of fun to perform and makes a great closing piece for any Christmas concert." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012
"This arrangement is marked 'laid back', and the first two verses of the carol are straight-forward and in 6/8 time. However the busy flute part in the second requires some concentration and fast finger work to carry off the written-out improvisatory passages for the intended effect. There are some lush harmonies in the piano, not for the average flute teacher to busk in a concert (speaking for myself!) but an accomplished pianist. Fairly straight-forward to get together with the piano but requiring effective use of dynamics and some careful ensemble work in the more jazzy section. This would be a great addition to a festive recital for the professional flautist, or perhaps an advanced grade 8 plus student looking for a challenging piece to include in their school Christmas concert." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

Deliberately fun and slightly tongue in cheek, this arrangement by Rebecca Faith is challenging but highly enjoyable. The new composed melodies become as much loved as the original tune, seamlessly layered and intertwined. The descending bass line, punchy accents and shifting time signatures give this piece a sense of a 'swing' style. Definitely a piece that requires strong drive and attitude. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. "This arrangement will bring a smile to everyone who hears it, and it gets the audience tapping their toes! There are technical challenges for both instrumentalists, with much octave movement in the piano part, and flutter tonguing for the flautist. A very exciting piece to perform!" - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012
"The flute dominates this arrangement by taking the tune for the first two verses accompanied by a syncopated off-beat piano part in 6/8 time. This then goes into a jazz waltz-like section with the tune in the piano accompanied by an obbligato flute line mainly in the top octave with grace notes and then a whole verse of the carol using flutter-tonguing, requiring some stamina before ending with a return of the jazz waltz to finish. Some tricky piano passages, and I'd put the flute part at a good grade 7 level due to its technical requirements and rather lively tempo. This would make a good addition to a recital around Christmas time and provide something festive but with a rather different flavour!" - Rachel Smith, November 2012

The alternative harmonies in this arrangement by Rebecca Faith make it a highly emotive interpretation. The piano takes control of the main melody, with the flute adding beautiful harmony and decorative features. The phrases 'O Come All Ye Faithful' and 'Joyful and Triumphant' are explored in shifting keys and harmonies adding a unique richness. However, the melody is still strongly present leaving the listener satisfied that they have heard the much loved tune. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. "This is one of my personal favourites out of Rebecca's Christmas arrangements as it breathes new life into this well known carol. One of the things I love about Rebecca's music is that it is so full of passion and emotion, and this piece is another example of that. A great arrangement for every flute and piano duo." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012
"This ever-popular carol is a great one to include an arrangement of, even though it may encourage the audience to sing-along! It opens with the tune in the piano part with a lilting but lyrical broken-chord pattern in the left hand, and continues with the tune throughout. The flute joins for the second verse but is always in thirds with the piano and never has the core tune for more than the odd phrase. This may be seen as a shame that it doesn’t even dominate in one verse, but instead it takes on more of an obbligato role accompanying the tune, and using all three octaves of the flute. Although the piano part is one of the more straight-forward and easier of the carol arrangements by Rebecca Faith, it is nevertheless important to carry the tune throughout and would require some practice on the part of the pianist in the more rich chordal sections. Probably around grade 4-5 standard for flute players and suitable for the concert platform, perhaps for a confident student to play in school concert or carol service." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

This beautiful melody arranged by Rebecca Faith is refreshed with nonchalant jazzy harmonies. The main melody is heard but then takes a different turn with a short interlude in an improvisatory style. The main melody is heard in three different keys descending each time, however the opposite effect occurs as the rich sound of the key change lifts the ambience of the music. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. "This is a beautiful, mellow arrangement of the American version of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear. With rich chords and jazz harmonies in the piano part, and long melodic lines on the flute, it is ideal for creating a warm festive atmosphere." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012
"The piano opens with the tune and is lightly harmonised before modulating with the flute entry. Again some effective and unexpected harmonies accompanying a fairly straight forward flute part of around grade 5 level, with some variations on the tune in the middle section giving the piece some contrast and interest. The piano part is simpler than some other of Rebecca's arrangements but still requiring some work and not just a simple 'busk' through! This would be suitable for players giving a recital around Christmas time but looking for some festive bits, either in the programme or as an encore." - Rachel Smith, November 2012

A lively interpretation by Rebecca Faith, the 'Joy to the World' melody is heard layered with original melodies and motifs. An interesting rhythmic idea binds the piece together making it sparkle and dance, with the underlying semiquaver movement creating an exciting shimmer effect. The constant shifting of key, texture and melodic ideas makes this an arrangement that will keep both the performer and listener on their toes. All of Rebecca's Christmas Carol arrangements are fresh, exciting and uniquely crafted, and are very much for the concert platform rather than a sing-along or play-along at home with Dad playing the piano part. "Joy to the World is a great opener for any Christmas concert and this lively, sparkling arrangement has always been well received by audiences. With technical challenges in both the flute and piano parts this arrangement will show off the players skill and is an exciting, virtuosic piece for the advanced flute and piano duo." - Sarah Waycott & Hannah Mitchell of Tranquillo Duo, November 2012
"This begins with the basic tune in the lower flute register, before varying it by taking it up the octave, then using imitation between the flute and piano parts, a number of modulations, and the flute taking over with an obbligato part accompanying the tune in the piano part. The original tune deviates somewhat and the inclusion of some complex rhythms and harmonies give it an interesting flavour, however at times the flute is quite low and may struggle to be heard when the piano has a rich chordal section in octaves. The piece would suit a concert platform, fitting into a December flute and piano recital, providing a festive flavour, however it would require some getting together with the pianist as the piano part is by no means easy." - Rachel Smith, November 2012.

Graded jazz pieces for solo flute, recently set on the new Trinity College syllabus for all 8 grades.
The story behind Scatadoodledoo:
"One day when I was at home practising my flute for a Jazz gig, I had a particularly hard chart with lots of key changes and I just couldn't get into the flow of it. I was thinking logically and thinking of the chord symbols and just thinking, thinking, thinking which anyone who improvises knows is a sure way to stop you being "in the flow". Being a Jazz singer, I love to scat sing and so I soon found myself putting my flute down and scat singing through the chart instead. I wasn't thinking, I was just scatting around with my "do-be-doos" and I was really getting into it and enjoying myself, feeling so free in comparison to when I was improvising on the flute. That's when I had the idea to sing and play on my flute at the same time... I figured that all I needed to do was practice playing on my flute what I was singing at the same time and I'd be sorted with this hard chart in front of me. I started off simply at first, but the more I practised, the more I found my voice and fingers working together until it literally felt like they were "one" and I was "singing my flute". Then when I took my voice out of it and all that remained was the sound of my flute, that feeling of "singing" still remained and I felt a freedom in my flute improvising that had been missing before. This discovery completely changed my jazz flute playing and to this day it is still my favourite way of practising improvising.
"Scatadoodledoo" is to encourage all Jazz flautists to start thinking of their flute as the voice they are scat singing with. The pieces range from grade one through to grade eight. Although the more advanced pieces like "scatastrophy" and "scatterbrain" have sections where the flautist has a chance to actually play and sing at the same time, it is never too early to practice this method whether it be with scales or with beginner pieces like "Scat Walker".
I hope you enjoy playing these as much as I enjoyed writing them."
