Mirror is a one movement piece for oboe and piano from the pen of Vincenzo Sorrentino that makes the most of the crisp articulation of the instrument. Syncopated rhythms and modern harmonies add spice to this piece. Requiring nimble fingerwork (particularly in the demisemiquaver passages) and some stamina (142 bars long with few rests), this is a piece for the more able player that would make a great addition to the concert platform.

Solo Bass Saxophone. Also composed at the World Sax Congress, Rumblings features the baritone's big brother! A melodic legato section opens the work. This leads into a small riff that develops into a full blown funk pattern that explodes into a longer phrased solo section. The riff then fades away into a modified recap of the opening section that fades away. A chance for one of the rarer saxophones to get some exposure!!

Solo Baritone Saxophone. Composed at the World Saxophone Congress 2012, Musings brings the baritone to the front of the stage. Each of the three sections shows a different side of the instrument - the first is cheeky, the second is a legato melodic section, and the finale is a highland romp! Using the full range of the instrument from top F down to bottom A, this is a piece for the baritone specialist!

Mask is full blooded concert piece for flute and piano by Vincenzo Sorrentino. The piano part ripples away while the flute soars and flies over the top. Played to a driving beat with interest in all parts, some simpler syncopation adds rhythmic interest. Still using his rich chromatic harmonies, but using more standard phrasing and sequences, this would be suitable for players of about grade 4 upwards. Ideal for a slightly more advanced group class.

A suite of 4 character pieces for alto flute and piano. Each movement lives up to it's title: 'Flight' explores the full range of the instrument with nimble fingers required for the many semiquaver runs. 'Plaintive' is mournful and melancholic, whilst 'Edgewise' explores the rhythmic possibilities of a 5/4 time signature. The last movement ' Radiance' has an improvisatory feel to it. All with the characteristic lush harmonies that are winning Phil more and more fans all the time. A great addition to the alto flute concert repertoire.

Across The Moon II, scored for Flute Quartet - four concert flutes. Flowing lower parts support two melodic upper parts that float serenely above them, with some almost oriental touches to the harmony. Alternating between D minor and A major, flute 1 soars up to top B flat while the two lower parts have frequent low C's and C sharps. A nice concert item for players of grade 4-6 standard.

The Waltzer And One Four All, two more saxophone quintets from Phillip Rawle, scored for SATTB or SAATB

Two saxophone quintets in a rich jazz ballad style. Using the standard jazz band line up of 2 alto, 2 tenor and 1 baritone sax, Quintessence I and II explore the lush chord voicings that only such a close knit group of instruments can create. Although slow, these pieces explore the whole range of all instruments, and pass through some fairly expterem keys (C#/F# major at one point) making them more of a challenge for advanced players of grade 7 upwards.

The original tune deviates somewhat and the inclusion of some complex rhythms and harmonies give it an interesting flavour, however at times the flute is quite low and may struggle to be heard when the piano has a rich chordal section in octaves. Graded jazz pieces for solo flute, recently set on the new Trinity College syllabus for all 8 grades. The story behind Scatadoodledoo: "One day when I was at home practising my flute for a Jazz gig, I had a particularly hard chart with lots of key changes and I just couldn't get into the flow of it. I was thinking logically and thinking of the chord symbols and just thinking, thinking, thinking which anyone who improvises knows is a sure way to stop you being "in the flow". Being a Jazz singer, I love to scat sing and so I soon found myself putting my flute down and scat singing through the chart instead. I wasn't thinking, I was just scatting around with my "do-be-doos" and I was really getting into it and enjoying myself, feeling so free in comparison to when I was improvising on the flute. That's when I had the idea to sing and play on my flute at the same time... I figured that all I needed to do was practice playing on my flute what I was singing at the same time and I'd be sorted with this hard chart in front of me. I started off simply at first, but the more I practised, the more I found my voice and fingers working together until it literally felt like they were "one" and I was "singing my flute". Then when I took my voice out of it and all that remained was the sound of my flute, that feeling of "singing" still remained and I felt a freedom in my flute improvising that had been missing before. This discovery completely changed my jazz flute playing and to this day it is still my favourite way of practising improvising. "Scatadoodledoo" is to encourage all Jazz flautists to start thinking of their flute as the voice they are scat singing with. The pieces range from grade one through to grade eight. Although the more advanced pieces like "scatastrophy" and "scatterbrain" have sections where the flautist has a chance to actually play and sing at the same time, it is never too early to practice this method whether it be with scales or with beginner pieces like "Scat Walker".
