In five movements, the first four are generally straightforward in form, exploring just one or two themes. The first is melodic and soaring, the second is an elegant waltz, the third is a blistering scherzo, while the fourth is a tranquil and wistful slow movement. The finale is more complex, starting out as a Bohemian peasant dance full off off-beat accents. Two other themes are developed in the course of the movement before a recap of the opening theme of the very first movement leads into a frenetic coda section.
All parts take their share of the melodic interest right through this arrangement, which requires careful work to bring out the artistic shading in the work. A great addition to any concert situation.

This is the piano reduction of an important and substantial work for clarinet and strings (which has also been published in a new, corrected edition - E643).
It was written in 1895 when the composer was still a student at the Royal College of Music. His composition teacher, Charles Villiers Stanford, was so impressed by the piece that he took it with him on a visit to Berlin in 1897, where he arranged for the Joachim Quartet to play it.

Double Reed Ensemble - 6 oboes, 2 Cor Anglais An arrangement of one of Gustav Holst's earlier works, originally for eight part women's voices. Lush harmonies and simple flowing lines build to create a beautifully elegant sound world. The statement and answer sections mean that this piece works well antiphonally with the two quartets separated, but is just as good as a large choir piece. The relatively straightforward lines and simpler instrumentation make this an ideal concert piece. Oboe 1 goes up to top D so maybe grade 3/4 standard. Other parts are lower.
