Easy music for string groups. Playstrings provides an enjoyable and varied repertoire for young string orchestras, carefully structured in two levels. The 'Easy' level does not normally exceed Grade 2 in difficulty with most parts playable in first position, while the 'Moderately Easy' level includes some parts of around Grade 3 standard. At easy level, alternative parts are provided so that the absence of viola or a double bass does not prevent the piece from being performed. Available in score or sets of instrumental parts. There are over 30 titles covering a wide range of styles, including classical pieces, folk tunes and Christmas collections. Playstrings is an ideal introduction to orchestral playing for young string players. Set of 19 parts contains: 4 x Violin 1, 4 x Violin 2, 4 x Violin 3, 2 x Viola, 3 x Cello, 2 x Double Bass/Cello 2. New product for the week of May 7, 2012.

About the whispering in movement No. IV (The movement “Kirschgarten”) The word “stemmer” is whispered by the musicians in movement IV, as marked in the parts (marked whisper in the music). The word “stemmer” is Danish for “voices”. The Danish letter “e” is here pronounced approximately like the “e” in the English word “stem”. The whisper should be “airy” and barely audible, not as loud as to be mistaken for talking/singing. If you prefer the German word “Stimmen” (same meaning and approximate same “sound”) you may substitute that word for “stemmer” - at your discretion. If you make the substitution then all occurences must be changed. In bar 7 the clarinet player whispers “stemmer” after the last forte note of the piano has died away enough to make the whispering audible. In bar 12 the pianist initiates the whispering, and is immediately followed by the viola player, creating an “echo” effect. In bar 19 follow the same procedure as in bars 7 and 12. Further whispering, two possibilities/options: 1)) AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION (this option is preferred by the composer and was used at the premiere performance of this movement at Risør Festival 8 July 2008). The special circumstances surrounding this particular performance (see last paragraph) allowed a number of people (approx. 10) from the attending audience to be instructed in advance to participate in the whispering from their position amongst the audience in the hall. It is not necessary for the audience “whisperers” to have a score at hand, they will whisper on cue from the musicians on stage. The first occurrence of this feature appears in bar 21-22 where the especially prepared members of the audience become part of the whispering echo. When the clarinet player has whispered “stemmer” the audience follows immediately, creating a multi-voiced echo effect. It is very important that the audience does not coordinate their whispers in rhythmic unison, the effect should be one of random echos from various directions. In bar 27, 36 and 38 the audience should follow the same procedure, on cue from the musician(s) on stage. 2)) WITHOUT AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION This option leaves out audience participation, which might prove difficult to organize in advance in ordinary performance. The echo effect should then be created solely by the musicians on stage, also in bars 21+22, 27, 36 and 38. The whispers among the musicians can “bounce” back and forth, “echo-like” between the musicians, at their discretion. The movement “Kirschgarten” is dedicated to the Risør Festival of Chamber Music, just like the other movements of SCHATTENLINIE. However, this movement is in particular dedicated to the many enthusiastic volunteers, on whom the Festival rely. Hopefully the volunteers have enjoyed the opportunity to be involved as “musicians”, although only for a single night, a brief moment, where they can relax – by whispering “stemmer”. Bent Sørensen, april 2008 (rev. 2012)

The two existing manuscripts (1915 and 1926) of these extracts 'arranged' by Falla himself correspond to the very beginning and end of a long period during which El Amor Brujo can be seen in a series of different states. They demonstrate the care which the composer generally brought to the task of instrumentation, and more particularly the aptness and validity of this piece in his own eyes as chamber music. It is clear that Falla's art of orchestration (and notably his feeling for instrumental idiom) gives his score a profound sense of balance. Scored for piano, 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass. Piano player reads from full score, string parts available separately.New product for the week of April 9, 2012

The Instrumental Duet Series Worship Suite books feature volumes organized into three 3-song thematic medleys. Each song has an ending, so that they may be presented individually, or as two- or three-song medleys. The piano is an equal musical partner with the instrument in these arrangements. A companion split-channel CD is available with the book/CD packs, and can be useful as a helpful practice aid, providing the instrumentalist or piano player a virtual practice partner. The instrumentalist may also perform with the piano trax if no accompanist is available. Programme Note A melodic ”thread” runs through the 14 minute piece, sometimes smooth and unisone, sometimes harmonized or even ”flossed up” into smaller threads. The title might make you think in terms of spiders (lat.: Arachnida) but Arachne is also the name of a weaver in roman mythology who dared to compete with the goddess Minerva in the art of weaving, and was transformed into a spider as punishment (Ovid). The name is also close to that of another mythical female figure, Ariadne, who span her thread to help Theseus find his way out of the labyrinth. Biology and myth weaved together. The title is pure association, though, as it turned up after the piece was finished.

As with all of his mature chamber music works Ravel also emerges as an innovator of traditional forms and techniques in his piano trio, composed in 1914. Thus the “Passacaglia” movement corresponds to the underlying form of the Baroque Period. The music on the other hand was, according to Ravel, “like that of Saint-Saëns”, which was surely meant ironically. For the historicizing template only served as a framework for experiments with musical idiom: from a constant oscillation between major and minor to combinations and overlaying of the most diverse metres. The fingering for our edition of this technically extremely demanding work was provided by the renowned French pianist Pascal Rogé.

The middle work in the three late chamber music sonatas was composed in spring 1915, directly after the cello sonata (HN 633). The innovative combination of sounds – a wind instrument, a stringed instrument, and a plucked instrument – greatly contributes to the impression of restrained melancholy. Debussy himself confirmed it, saying: “It is terribly sad. And I do not know whether one should laugh or cry about it? Perhaps both at the same time?” On another occasion he emphasised the similarities with his own compositional style of the 1890s, remarking of the sonata: “It reminds me of a very old Claude Debussy – the one of the Nocturnes”.
