Three Pastiche Pieces. (for Violin and Piano). By Evan Turner. For Violin. Solos. Hardie Music Press. Scottish. Intermediate. Book. 12 pages. Published by Hardie Press (MB.HP28).
ISBN 9780946868292. Scottish. 9" x 12" inches.
The Three Pastiche Pieces were written for a young pupil. Composed in a tuneful and light style they pay their musical respects to the early jazz era. The opening tune, an elegant cakewalk is followed by a melancholy sweet ballad and the set concludes with a jaunty upbeat number suggestive of a jam session. Two of the compositions 'Blue Lullaby' and 'The Jazzie Knumber' have been selected by the ABRSM as Violin Grade 2 List C alternative pieces 2005-2008. Reviewed by Glasgow Centre of ESTA Scotland: We gave all three pieces in the volume the thumbs up. This is well-written teaching material reminiscent of the Rolland repertoire, where simple playing techniques are used to give exciting music to beginner players. The jazz idiom gives this music more appeal to today's young players.

Airs & Dances is a collection of Scottish strathspeys (rugged, lyrical dance tunes) for Violin and other melodic instruments. Strathspeys are usually played slower than reels, with many long-short dotted rhythmic patterns. This compilation features some of the best-known strathspeys as well as some of the quirkier, rarer tunes in this wonderful repertoire. The pieces are arranged chronologically.
The melodies as written are the skeletons of the tunes, without much additional information like bowings, dynamics, and articulations. This presentation allows the reader to both learn the melodies in their most general sense as well as use their creative judgment to vary each tune's melody and nuances. Each piece is framed with historical and cultural context, and audio is available online. 118 pages.

A Fiddler's Book of Scotish Jigs from 18th & 19th Century by Charles Gore. Edited by Alastair Hardie. For Fiddle. Solos. Hardie Music Press. Scottish. Beginning-Intermediate. Book. 48 pages. Published by Hardie Press (MB.HP07).
ISBN 9780946868216. Scottish. 8.25" x 11.75" inches.
A great deal of Scottish fiddle music was collected and composed by individuals who have largely faded from memory, not because their work is in any way inferior, but simply because the collections they published have become very difficult to find. Whereas the better-known quote "fiddler-composers" (like Gow and Marshall) have been kept in the public eye by writes, artists, and the music publishing world, others are now all but forgotten. A reservoir of quite excellent dance music -- strathspeys, reels, quicksteps, as well as jigs-- remains to be rediscovered. This book contains music from a half-dozen of the lesser-known talents of the period 1780-1820. Call it a first step towards rekindling the quest for the hems of the Scottish repertoire. There is plenty more where these came from! All the music in this volume adheres to the composers' original published versions of the melodies, and adds chord symbols to supply the original "bass" part.
