Lamb of God by David Gillingham. Arranged by Michael Brand. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon, Bb Clarinet 1, 2, 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, 2, 3, Horn 1/2, Horn 3/4, Trombone 1/2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Piano, Timpani (3 drums), Percussion ). Grade 5. Score and parts. Duration 12:10. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.05240). Lamb of God is a tone poem based on the Christian story of the passion. The work is cast in five connected sections progressing to the chronology of the story. The motivic material, which unites the work, is taken from the Easter sequence, Victimae paschali laudesi ("Praises to the Paschal Lamb"). In the Catholic Church, the "Paschal Lamb" is representative of Christ who was sacrificed on the cross to redeem the people (or "sheep") of the world. The first section, O crux, portare talentum mundi ("O Cross, to bear the treasure of the world") seeks to depict Christ's torturous walk bearing his own cross. Motives from the Easter sequence are clearly articulated under and over dissonant harmonies and a regular march-like rhythmic drive. There is even the incessant cracking of a whip throughout the section. As the site of crucifixion nears, there is a quieting of activity, taking pause at the thought of death with the xylophone continuing the intensity. The walk then resumes to the crucifixion and segues into the second section, Dux vitae mortuus ("The leader of life is slain"). Announced by timpani and snare drum rolls, Christ is nailed to the cross. Muted bass drum and brake drum make the torture vividly clear. Crying dissonance in the ensemble, which grows with each successive nail, follows each nail. Intense suffering follows. An alto saxophone solo alludes to Hans Hassler's tune, O Sacred Head Now Wounded. This intensity grows to a climax on the penultimate strain of Hassler's tune. Sever chant-like statements follow this in piccolo, bass clarinet, bells and piano representing the final words of Christ. In the ensuing section, Sepulchrum Christi viventis ("I saw the sepulchre of the living Christ"), a timpani roll followed by three loud, grieving cries of the full ensemble signifies the stormy darkness following the death of Christ on the the cross. The section ends morbidly in C# minor. The vibraphone continues to sustain a C# into the next section, Surrexit Christus spes mea ("Christ my hope has risen"), which begins with small, but bright outbursts by bells and high woodwinds. The outbursts grow and begin to cascade joyously leading to dramatic strains of Victimae pachali laudes by the low brass. The section continues to grow in rhythmic and textural activity and finally reaches an apex in the key of C major. The final section, Agnus redemit oves ("The lamb has redeemed the sheep"), is a benediction in G major consisting of harp-like passages in the piano, chant-like motives and fragments of the Victimae paschali laudes. The work closes in Eb major, a chromatic change from G major which, to my ear, suggests eternity.

Sounds, Sketches, & Ideas by Roger Cichy. Arranged by Michael Brand. For Concert Band (Flute 1/Piccolo, Flute 2, Oboe 1, Oboe 2, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, F Horn 1/2, F Horn 3/4, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Bb Trumpet 3, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion 1 (s). Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 10:40. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.06570). Sounds, Sketches and Ideas is a unique work in which composer Roger Cichy, and daughter, Rebecca, have collaborated for the first time on a musical composition for wind ensemble. Having a child show signs of musical creativity has been something Roger Cichy has not taken lightly. His daughter, Rebecca, now 12 years of age, was born into a musical family and started her musical training at a very early age. By age 6, she began creating her own melodies. This situation presented Roger Cichy with a unique opportunity of having his daughter create the melodic framework for a composition and for him to complete the work based on her melodic material. Several of her earlier melodies were used as well as new material she created specifically for this work.

Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 9:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.06580). Commissioned by the Scituate High School Band in Schituate, Rhode Island, where composer Roger Cichy now lives, FESTIVAL! represents a suite of movements all relating to the atmosphere and flavor of a typical town festival. The idea for the work began from a long list of suggestions that the students of the Scituate High School Band created and discussed as possible themes of their new work to be commissioned. Out of that list came the theme "Festival" particularly because of the Scituate Arts Festival, an annual community event which occurs in the fall. The Scituate Arts Festival, which typically attracts around fifty thousand people to the little townof North Scituate, is typical of most fetivals, in which people who attend find tasty food, pulsating music, plenty to see and do, and just good old American fun. FESTIVAL! was premiered on the 8th of March, 2001 by the Scituate High School Band with the composer in attendance.

Four Temperaments for Tuba. (Tuba Feature). By Michael Brand. For Soloist(s) with Concert Band (Flute 1, Flute 2/Piccolo, Oboe, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Solo Tuba, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Bb Trumpet 3, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in ). Band Music. Maestro Band Series. Band: grade 4.5 / Solo: grade 6. Score and parts. Duration 10:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.R10216). I wrote this piece at the request of the British tuba virtuoso Stephen Sykes to help fill a gap in the repertoire. We agreed that whilst there should be display elements within the piece, it should be accessible to good tuba players and tuneful at the same time. The first few bars contain the theme of the whole piece which is developed as four variations. The first variation (or Temperament) is neo-classical: conventionally written and structured. The swing variation (No. 2) is backed by a big band line-up plus horns and gives that soloist some opportunity to be flexible. Some improvisation could replace the written lines.Variation 3 is scored mostly for woodwinds (apart from a trombone chorale) and is contemplative. It could stand alone. The last variation is a scherzo, which leads to a coda (so that the soloist can show off some double-tonguing!).The cadenza was composed by Stephen Sykes and played by him with the composer's approval. However, soloists should feel free to compose their own cadenza if they wish, but ending with bars 162 and 163 either as written or down an octave.

The Led Page by Daniel McCarthy. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in F 3, Trumpet in Bb 1/2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Trombone 1/2, Euphonium, (Baritone T.C.), Tuba, Do). Band Music. Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 7:05. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11570). "The Led Page" is a symphonic band adaptation of my orchestral work, "Turn the Page." The writing of "Turn the Page" was the result of my association with conductor and good friend Jung Ho Pak (New Haven Symphony and World Youth Symphony Orchestras). Maestro Pak and I met at The Interlochen Arts Camp where we are both faculty and we collaborate on the orchestra reading project with the student composers. Our conversations over the years have included the future of the orchestra and new orchestral music in our society. Audiences have lost a great deal of context with new music over the past 90 years, in my opinion, and new music has remained an anomaly for many listeners. So when I decided to write Jung Ho an orchestra piece, I knew it had to be music that meant something to listeners--something that would have cultural context to an audience and yet be challenging and interesting to play. And a piece that would be played more than just once.I seek a certain drama and excitement in my music. Perhaps that is why I am so attracted to composers like Mahler, Stravinky, and Daugherty. But I also have a diverse listening palate having played big band jazz as a lead trumpet player and funk as a synthesizer player.Often when I travel, especially on long driving trips, I will listen to old "art-rock" of bands such as Yes, Genesis, and Led Zeppelin. One of my favorite tunes is "Heartbreaker" from the album "Led Zeppelin II." It has a very unusual guitar solo in the middle of the song-- Unusual, because the band stops playing and Jimmy Page takes a motivically oriented solo, much like a cadenza in a concerto. It was the first time anything like that was ever done in that genre and was really the beginning of guitarists becoming virtuosos on their instruments. Actually, that solo had all the fire of a Tchaikovsky or Mendelssohn concerto cadenza.Hence, the idea came to be to combine the suggestion of this solo with orchestra and, later, to use an electric guitar or CD recording of the actual solo with the orchestra. It seemed to me that all the power of Led Zeppelin was certainly in good company with a full-sized symphony orchestra--witness Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." Could any rock band create that much excitement?

Capriccio for Tuba by Rodney Newton. Solo. For Tuba and Wind Band. Popular tuba piece in one movement. Light Concert. Advanced. Score and parts. Standard Notation. Duration 9:00. Published by Winwood Music (WO.0294). With Standard Notation. Light Concert. This delightful tuba solo has become a firm favourite all over the world in its brass band and piano versions and Winwood Music is delighted, at last, to make this work available in a wind band accompaniment by the composer. Written for James Gourlay (who premiered the orchestral version in 2005) Capriccio is by turns bold and purposeful, broody and romantic. With a couple of short cadenzas neatly woven into the structure it is effectively a nine-minute concerto with a proven track record with players and audiences. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Capriccio can be seen as an important contribution to the literature for the instrument.

The appeal of the piece is enhanced by the elegant and witty poetry of Ogden Nash and will make a fine addition to any concert.

Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 9:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.05320). With Heart & Voice was commissioned by Apple Valley High School Bands, Scott A. Jones, director (Apple Valley, Minnesota), to commemorate the 25th year of existence of this high school. Apple Valley High School's strong commitment to the arts was a major factor in my decision to take on this commission. After visiting the school in December of 2000 and meeting many of the students, faculty, and administrators, I became greatly inspired.Thematically, the work is based on the Apple Valley High School Alma Mater, an old Spanish hymn which has made its way into most church hymnals under the name of "Come, Christians, Join to Sing." It is perhaps fate that this hymn, a particular favorite of mine, happens to be the tune used for the Alma Mater. Christian Henry Bateman wrote the words for the hymn in 1843 and the first verse contains the line, "Let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice." Hence, the title, With Heart and Voice. What better way to celebrate 25 years of this great high school than with our "hearts" and "voices." The "voice" in this case is the music and the "heart" is the emotion that the music renders in celebration. Although the work is largely celebratory in nature, it begins with a feeling of reticence and apprehension, much like the beginnings of Apple Valley High School. It was at one time only an idea or perhaps only a sketch in the mind of the architect. Small fragments of the Alma Mater are heard in the opening moments of the piece. The piece gains momentum, texture and volume in this opening section culminating in a dramatic statement of the first four notes of the theme. A calmness follows and a lyrical flute solo enters. This new material represents the uniqueness of the "mission" of a new school which will have roots in academic excellence and commitment to the visual and performing arts. The euphonium echoes the flute and soon more instruments join in and the section culminates with a dramatic fanfare. This is followed by a transitional section with much dissonance and rhythmic activity, equated to the challenge of bringing life to this new school. A glorious statement of the Alma Mater follows signifying the dedication of Apple Valley High School, twenty five years ago. The ensuing section begins as a fugue with underlying unsettling rhythmic activity in the percussion. The obvious reference of this section is the challenge-maintaining the goals and mission of the high school. The section becomes frantic and desperate, but soon subsides into peacefulness. The peacefulness is stated by the marriage of the "Alma Mater " theme and the "Mission" theme. . .after all, for the High School to survive, it must never forget its mission. An extended finale follows which celebrates both themes in playful, joyful, and dramatic exuberance.

Foster's America by David Gillingham. For Concert Band (Flute 1/2, Oboe, Clarinet 1, Clarinet 2/3, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Horn 1/2, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2/3, Trombone 1/2, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Percussion 1 (xylophone, marimba, temple blocks,). Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 10:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.06490). "Foster's America" is a three-movement suite featuring four original songs by American composer, Stephen C. Foster (1826-1864). Two of the songs are not well known, but certainly bear the characteristics of Foster's melodic, harmonic and rhythmic style. The first movement features the song, "A Penny For Your Thoughts." It is cast in a sort of "march-like" style and features chamber scoring that is reminiscent of banjo or guitar accompaniments which were popular in Foster's day. The "Scottish snap" rhythm in the melody is a unique earmark of the catchy melody. The second movement, "Beautiful Dreamer" should be familiar to many. To capture the "dreamy" atmosphere, the atmosphere, the movement begins with an introduction in E-flat minor with a flute and clarinet solo in dialogue using motives from the song accompanied by a texture of vibraphone, bells, and marimba to enhance the ambiance. E-flat minor succumbs to E-flat major as the song unfolds. However, there is a rhythmic twist to the presentation in that the melody employs three quarter notes followed by two dotted halves against a consistent pattern of eighths in 6/8 meter instead of the consistent eighth notes of the original version in 9/8 meter. The movement works its way to a climax of the tune in 3/4 meter and ends as dreamily as it began. The third movement casts two songs, "If You've Only Got a Moustache" and "Gentle Lena Clare." The former is sort of a novelty song and is treated in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, while the latter is treated with expressive sweetness as a contrast to the first. Both tunes join together (not quite exactly) followed by a rousing coda.

Woodland Serenade and Rondo. (Alto Saxophone Feature). By Catherine McMichael. For Soloist(s) with Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2/3, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bassoon 1/2, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2/3, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in F 3/4, Trombone 1/2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba,). Grade 4. Score and parts. Duration 6:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.08780). Woodland Serenade & Rondo is a 6-minute concerto, crafted to spotlight not only a fine saxophone soloist, but also to give a director the opportunity to feature other outstanding solo wind players in the ensemble. Its premiere was December 20, 2003 at the prestigious Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. It was performed by The Woodlands (TX) High School Band, Brett Johnson conducting, with Mr. Lynn Klock, professor of saxophone at the University of Massachussetts at Amherst, the soloist.Although it is a short piece, the thematic material is rich and well-developed. The serenade's simple, haunting theme demands sensitive musicality and warm tone quality from soloist and band alike. Vibraphone, marimba, bells and wind chimes create a dreamy backdrop to the long-limbed melody. At times the serenade is chamber-like in texture spotlighting solo winds on lines that answer and mingle with the saxophone melodies. A short cadenza is followed by an improvisational type variation of the main theme, and the serenade comes to a peaceful close as the saxophone and solo winds call and respond with a motive from the theme. An immediate segue into the rondo follows, picking up the pace with a jazzy tune derived from the serenade theme, accompanied by brass. In classic rondo form, the second and third themes have contrasting textures and moods, and include the use of xylophone, slapstick, rimshots and other percussion colors. Sass, humor and driving intensity are all elements of this fast-paced rondo, with the ending bringing a real wail of delight from soloist, band and audience alike.- Catherine McMichael.
