Sonata for violin, cello and basso continuo by Giuseppe Torelli (1658-1709). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Violin, Violoncello, basso continuo. Full score and parts. 37 pages. Duration 7 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH116-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-80-8. A little-known manuscript in the British Library contains one of only two known sonatas by him for violin, obbligato cello and continuo. In this rare type of sonata the cello becomes a full partner to the violin (which one could liken to a second violin playing an octave lower than usual) rather than an adjunct to the continuo line. The four-movement sonata in A in London, which the immigrant musician Johann Christoph Pepusch may have acquired from Torelli in Berlin just before journeying to England in 1697, is an exciting piece offering much opportunity for virtuosic display, often in dialogue form, by both violin and cello. One realizes, reading or playing this work, how much Bach and other Germans owed to Torelli, of whose inventive music they had knowledge a good ten or twenty years before Vivaldi arrived on the scene.

Sorgea col lume in fronte by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1751). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Soprano and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 40 pages. Duration 8 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH109-FSP). ISBN 978-1-905779-20-8. The theme of the cantata is the separation of lovers brought on by the enforced departure of the beloved on a sea voyage. The protagonist likens his tears to the waves surrounding the boat and his sighs to the winds that propel it, the two images giving rise to some lively word-painting. Both arias are in slow tempo, but the concluding cavata lends a welcome touch of animation to the cantata.

Trio sonata by Antonio Montanari. Edited by Michael Talbot. For Two oboes & basso continuo. Full score and parts. 29 pages. Duration 7 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH115-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-68-9. Antonio Montanari (1676-1737), who succeeded Corelli as leader of the Roman violinists, is the composer of a small quantity of surviving music of exceptional quality and interest. They include this trio sonata written specifically for two oboes and bass. The extent to which wind instruments were cultivated in Italy in the early eighteenth century is today often not appreciated, and this fine, slightly quirky three-movement sonata, which is very idiomatic without being difficult for the players, forms an excellent companion piece to Vivaldi's sonata in G minor for the same instruments (RV 81) and is likewise preserved uniquely in the Engelhart collection in the University Library of Lund, Sweden.

Three 'Dresden' Sonatas by Antonio Montanari. Edited by Michael Talbot. For Violin and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 55 pages. Duration 20 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH114-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-67-0. Few of Montanari's compositions survive, but they suffice to show that he was a composer of rare ability and originality. Among them are three short violin sonatas brought back to Dresden in 1717 by the German violinist Johann Georg Pisendel, who had briefly taken lessons with him. These are loosely describable as chamber sonatas, but make technical and expressive demands well beyond the average. One sonata even ends with an unaccompanied gigue that is a rare example of its kind for Italy. Clearly, Montanari deserves to be rescued from his present neglect. The three 'Dresden' sonatas published together in this volume are believed to be the first-ever modern edition of any of his chamber music.

Se piu sfida i miei pensieri by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1751). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Soprano and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 38 pages. Duration 9 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH108-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-66-2. The poetic theme of the cantata is the well-worn one of unrequited love. In the opening aria, the singer challenges the God of Love to battle. This is a true aria di battaglia in which the singer mimics the idiom of the trumpet. Indeed, the first seven bars of the vocal part, transposed up a whole tone, would suit a Baroque trumpet in C excellently. The protagonist, whose persona is male (although that fact did not then, and does not today, disqualify the cantata from performance by female sopranos), confesses his love-smitten state in a brief recitative.

Two cantatas by Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni (1671-1751). Edited by Michael Talbot. For Alto and basso continuo. Full score and parts. 51 pages. Duration 15 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH107-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-65-4. Both cantatas are typical specimens of Albinoni's style. The little flourishes of conjunct demisemiquavers seen in bar 13 of the opening aria of Vorrei che lo sapessi and bar 14 of that of Senza il core del mio bene, are a 'trademark' feature. So, too, is the use of a Devise (a preliminary statement of the voice's opening theme) in the majority of the arias. The strongly independent rhythmic and melodic character of the continuo bass, with its intensive development of characteristic motives that sometimes amounts to ostinato treatment (as in the opening aria of Vorrei che lo sapessi), is quintessentially Albinonian. These cantatas are likely to date, at least in their original form, from before 1700.

Sonata 'La Montanari' by Giuseppe Valentini. Edited by Michael Talbot. For Violin and basso continuo (keyboard). Keyboard score and parts. 39 pages. Duration 9 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH111-FSP). ISBN 1-904229-54-9. La Montanari has a five-movement plan with a 'double' finale: a finale of normal length is followed by a miniature second finale, like coffee following a dessert. The model for this arrangement may have been the Giga-Gavotta sequence that occurs quite often in chamber sonatas. In the preface of his Idee per camera Valentini tells performers that if they find a work too difficult or too long they may reduce the number of fast movement to two. This is probably the first-ever critical edition of a Valentini violin sonata to be placed in public circulation.

Tchal-Kouyrouk et la septeme by Nicolas Gilbert. For Orchestra (2,2,2,2-4,3,3,Tuba-Percussion-piano-12,10,8,6,4). Full score. 36 pages. Duration 9 minutes. Published by Edition HH Music Publishers (HH.HH094-FSC). Tchal-Kouyrouk, the trusty steed of Toshtuk, Giant of the Steppes, is going to recover his master's soul, which has been stolen, then bring Toshtuk back to his wife Kenjeke, who is pregnant with his child. In those far-off days when Toshtuk, Kenjeke and Tchal-Kouyrouk were living, the twelve-tone row was evidently already a historical necessity. The rules surrounding its worship were to be respected: never interrupt the twelve-tone row, never make irreverent remarks about it, never look at another system of pitch-organization, apply the model of the twelve- tone row to everything in the world to which it might be applicable.
