After composing the unconventional but highly successful Night Piece (Notturno) for the inaugural Leeds International Piano Competition, Marion Harewood, the competition's co-founder along with Dame Fanny Waterman, asked Britten to write a further piece for the 1966 contest. He began a set of variations in the autumn of 1965, but the manuscript breaks off just before the end of the sixth of what appear to have been intended to be at least ten variations. Here, in Variations (1965) for Piano, Colin Matthews concludes the sixth variation and you can purchase the piano score, which includes a facsimile reproduction of the first page of Britten's original manuscript.

Jacob Gade's classic arranged for piano duet (four hands) by conductor Esther Bobrova Lange. FROM THE PREFACE It is a common misconception that ”Tango Jalousie” (Tango Tsigane) was written for the movie, ”Don Q”. The piece was also played at the movie premiere in Paladsteatret on September 14th 1925, but there was no jealousy-based drama in the movie. Nonetheless, the melody was well suited to the Zorro legend in a Mexican setting. But in the book “Jacob Gade – et eventyr i musik” (a fairytale in music) by Jørgen Gram Christensen, one learns that in a 1956 interview, Jacob Gade recounted the incident in 1925, which concerned him very much: “One day the magazines featured a dramatic description of a jealousy-based murder and the word “jealousy” stood for me as a title with which the music became more and more attached.” There are many different arrangements of “Tango Jalousie”, but I have always found that there was a need for a piano four hands version of this wonderful piece. In the process of working out a piano four hands version, I used the full orchestra score and made sure that the most essential orchestra parts were included. Also, the melody parts and accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. Esther Bobrova Lange conductor

This volume contains all of Beethoven’s surviving cadenzas and lead-ins for Piano concertos: both for his own concertos nos. 1–4, for his Piano arrangement of the Violin Concerto op. 61 as well as for Mozart’s Concerto in d minor K. 466. They were in all probability not intended for his own use, as Beethoven’s improvisatory skills were legendary. His pupil and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria, in whose library the unpublished autographs were kept for decades during the composer’s lifetime, might well have prompted him to do so. This Henle edition contains the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition that has been put into a new order and updated.Piano Concerto no. 1 in C major op. 15: first cadenza 1st movement Piano Concerto no. 2 in B flat major op. 19: cadenza 1st movement Piano Concerto no. 3 in C minor op. 37: cadenza 1st movement Piano Concerto no. 4 G major op. 58: first cadenza 1st movement Piano Transcription of the Violin concerto in D major op. 61a: cadenza 1st movement Piano Transcription of the Violin concerto D major op. 61a: Transition: 2nd to 3rd movement Piano Transcription of the Violin concerto in D major op. 61a: first cadenza 3rd movement Piano Concerto in d minor K. 466 by W.A. The Six Sonatas for Piano K. 26–31 that can also have a violin accompaniment were composed in The Hague. They were published in 1766 and were dedicated to Princess Caroline von Nassau-Weilburg. These jewels by the “Wunderkind” Mozart have only been known in the form of Violin sonatas up to now (also see Henle Urtext edition HN 1079). Henle's edition for solo Piano, the first time it has ever been printed in this form, is now available for Piano teachers to make use of in their lessons, as well as for all lovers of Mozart.

In 1764 the eight-year-old Mozart wrote the Sonatas K. 10–15 in London. Leopold Mozart was only able to understand his son’s musical genius in terms of it being a God-given wonder: “That my boy […] knows all of this with his 8 years that could be expected of a man of forty years. In short: whoever has not seen or heard it, cannot believe it”. According to the title page the six sonatas can either be played as piano trios, violin sonatas or simply piano solo. As Henle have already published them in the form of Piano trios and Violin sonatas (HN 1078), they are now presenting them in an Urtext Edition for Piano solo.

As astonishing as it might sound, Mozart was already composing piano sonatas (K. 6–9) at the age of seven. It is wonderfully fresh and varied music. Henle have already published Urtext editions of these four sonatas in the version for piano and violin (HN 1077). According to Henle, to their knowledge they have never been published solely as piano sonatas, even though Mozart described them thus in the title and they were assuredly played as such. Whilst the added violin provides tonal enrichment, it can be omitted without loss. A true treasure trove of easier, unknown original music by Mozart.

Frédéric Chopin composed his piano trio when he was an 18-year-old student. About the performance of the trio on 31 August 1830 he wrote: “On Sunday we rehearsed the trio. Perhaps because I haven’t heard it for a while, I was very happy with myself (fortunate man!).” Incidentally, Robert Schumann also shared this opinion, writing in a review: “Is it not as noble as possible, more full of enthusiasm than any song ever written by a poet, original in the smallest detail as in the whole, every note music and life?” We agree with this verdict and recommend this trio in our new Urtext edition to all lovers of highly romantic chamber music.

The Czech composer Antonin Rejcha (also Anton Reicha, 1770–1836) was famous as both an experimental composer and as a teacher and theorist. His 36 Fugues for Piano testify to this experimentalism; they can be seen as a type of “Well-Tempered Piano of the new ages”, basing the traditional Baroque fugue on radical new fundaments. The first edition of this unusual collection was produced in 1803 in Vienna by Reicha’s own publishing company “Au Magasin de l’Imprimerie chimique”. It included both a dedication poem to Joseph Haydn and a comprehensive foreword in which Reicha identifies the characteristics of his compositional style. The second edition (Vienna 1805) included a short theoretical text “Über das neue Fugensystem” (“On the new fugal system”) in the form of a polemic, reacting to his critics, one of whom was Beethoven. Six fugues are based on the themes of other composers (Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, Handel). The musical text is a corrected reprint of the edition by Václav Jan Sýkora from 1973, which itself was based on the referred to edition from 1805 as well as on the later edition by Tobias Haslinger (Vienna, c. 1828). Works historically important to the development of the fugue New foreword by Roman Dykast (Cz/Eng/Ger)
