Frédéric Chopin composed his piano trio when he was an 18-year-old student. About the performance of the trio on 31 August 1830 he wrote: “On Sunday we rehearsed the trio. Perhaps because I haven’t heard it for a while, I was very happy with myself (fortunate man!).” Incidentally, Robert Schumann also shared this opinion, writing in a review: “Is it not as noble as possible, more full of enthusiasm than any song ever written by a poet, original in the smallest detail as in the whole, every note music and life?” We agree with this verdict and recommend this trio in our new Urtext edition to all lovers of highly romantic chamber music.

The Czech composer Antonin Rejcha (also Anton Reicha, 1770–1836) was famous as both an experimental composer and as a teacher and theorist. His 36 Fugues for Piano testify to this experimentalism; they can be seen as a type of “Well-Tempered Piano of the new ages”, basing the traditional Baroque fugue on radical new fundaments. The first edition of this unusual collection was produced in 1803 in Vienna by Reicha’s own publishing company “Au Magasin de l’Imprimerie chimique”. It included both a dedication poem to Joseph Haydn and a comprehensive foreword in which Reicha identifies the characteristics of his compositional style. The second edition (Vienna 1805) included a short theoretical text “Über das neue Fugensystem” (“On the new fugal system”) in the form of a polemic, reacting to his critics, one of whom was Beethoven. Six fugues are based on the themes of other composers (Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, Handel). The musical text is a corrected reprint of the edition by Václav Jan Sýkora from 1973, which itself was based on the referred to edition from 1805 as well as on the later edition by Tobias Haslinger (Vienna, c. 1828). One of the finest music manuscripts – for scholarly and practical use My Ladye Nevells Booke is one of the finest musical manuscripts of the late 16th century. With its 42 compositions, it comprises about a third of the keyboard music by William Byrd – including some of his most popular compositions such as the variations on “Sellinger’s Round” and “All in a Garden Green”. Byrd himself selected the pieces for this anthology and directed the work of copyist John Baldwin. The meticulous, small corrections, found on almost every page, were most probably written by Byrd himself. The grand coat-of-arms at the beginning refers to Sir Henry Neville of Billingbear (Berkshire) and as such identifies his wife Elizabeth as the dedicatee. The manuscript did not become public property until 2006 when it was purchased for the British Library. Now it is published in book form for the first time and gives the musician an impression of the richly decorated preserved original volume. In his commentary, Byrd specialist Oliver Neighbour describes the genesis and history of the work. He also provides information on Byrd’s concept, the chosen repertoire and gives technical details on the notation.

Schott's urtext edition of his complete organ oeuvre in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' is based on the sources, taking the latest findings of the Buxtehude research into account. Unlike all previous Buxtehude editions, this new edition by Claudia Schumacher follows the rhythm notation of the original, i.e. the tablature, thus providing for the first time the authentic version which enables the player to interpret the works in a differentiated manner. Volumes 3 and 4 contain a total of 48 chorale arrangements in alphabetical order of the initials of the chorales: Vol. 3 contains 26 pieces (A-L), Vol. 4 22 arrangements (M-W).

Whose ears are not instantly filled with the dreamy flute solo when Debussy’s "Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune" is mentioned? Very few people know that before he wrote the orchestral score Debussy made a version for two pianos. Both versions should be seen as being independent, and they differ in some details. The differences are revealed in our edition, as are Debussy’s entries concerning the work in his copy of the score. The volume also contains the Spanish impression "Lindaraja" and the three pieces "En blanc et noir", in which Debussy addresses the horrors of World War I. Andreas Groethuysen, one half of the famous piano duo Tal & Groethuysen, provided the fingerings.

Abwechselnd stellen die zwei Klaviere das Bassmotiv vor. Jeder neue Anlauf bringt eine Steigerung des Tempos. Doch erst das Zusammenspiel entfesselt das eigentliche Vivace. Von nun an sind es nur noch die largamente-Abschnitte und ein lyrischer Mittelteil (cantabile), die der forteilenden Bassfigur vorubergehend Einhalt gebieten. Wie ein Perpetuum mobile dreht sich das Motiv durch den Fortgang der Toccata, sorgt fur immer komplexere Schichtungen in der Satzstruktur. Der lettische Komponist Peteris Vasks hat sich selbst auf Grund seiner geographischen und kulturellen Herkunft als Musiker der Peripherie bezeichnet. Dass er mit seiner Musik voll emotionaler Stringenz immer wieder ins Zentrum zeitgenossischen Musikschaffens vorstosst, belegen gerade auch seine kammermusikalischen Instrumentalwerke.

Heinz Holliger hat sich intensiv mit Friedrich Holderlin und Robert Schumann beschaftigt. Dem dritten Satz seiner Partita, einer Barcarole, stellt er ein Motto voran: "Uns wiegen lassen, wie | Auf schwankem Kahne der See". Diese Zeilen sind dem Holderlingedicht "Mnemosyne" (Gedachtnis) entnommen. Das Stuck beginnt im Rhythmus der alten Gondellieder. Zeitweise verliert es aber den ihm eigenen stetigen Fluss der Musik und verfallt in Sprachahnlichkeit. Der vierte und sechste Satz sind mit "Sphynxen fur Sch." uberschrieben, was an die Bezeichnung "Sphinxes" erinnert, die Schumann in seinem Carnaval fur die Umsetzung seines Namens in Tone verwendete. Satz II "Fuga" rekurriert auf Schumanns Fugen fur Pedalflugel. Exakt in der Mitte erscheint die Chiffre BACH, eine Transposition aus Schumanns op. 60. Deutlich ist erkennbar, wie Holliger sich mit seiner Partita auf einen geschichtlichen Hintergrund bezieht, ihn vielfaltig schichtet und gliedert. Komponiert fur das Bachjahr 2000, hat Holliger hier in Form und Kabbalistik nicht allein dem Leipziger Thomaskantor seine Referenz erwiesen. Auch die so gegensatzlichen Bach-Anschauungen Schumanns und Liszts sind eingewoben. Ein gleichermassen pianistisch wie musikalisch anspruchsvolles Konzertstuck.
