The Six Sonatas for Piano K. 26–31 that can also have a violin accompaniment were composed in The Hague. They were published in 1766 and were dedicated to Princess Caroline von Nassau-Weilburg. These jewels by the “Wunderkind” Mozart have only been known in the form of Violin sonatas up to now (also see Henle Urtext edition HN 1079). Henle's edition for solo Piano, the first time it has ever been printed in this form, is now available for Piano teachers to make use of in their lessons, as well as for all lovers of Mozart.

In 1764 the eight-year-old Mozart wrote the Sonatas K. 10–15 in London. Leopold Mozart was only able to understand his son’s musical genius in terms of it being a God-given wonder: “That my boy […] knows all of this with his 8 years that could be expected of a man of forty years. In short: whoever has not seen or heard it, cannot believe it”. According to the title page the six sonatas can either be played as piano trios, violin sonatas or simply piano solo. As Henle have already published them in the form of Piano trios and Violin sonatas (HN 1078), they are now presenting them in an Urtext Edition for Piano solo.

As astonishing as it might sound, Mozart was already composing piano sonatas (K. 6–9) at the age of seven. It is wonderfully fresh and varied music. In the last scene of Wagner's opera 'The Valkyrie', Wotan, the father of the gods, punishes his daughter Brünnhilde for her disobedience. He wants to curse her to a deep sleep for her to be helplessly at the mercy of the first man who wakes her. At her pleading, he mitigates the punishment and instructs Loge, the God of Fire, to surround the sleeping woman with a ring of fire on her rock. Only the most fearless and freest hero (Siegfried) is to get through the fire and wake Brünnhilde as his bride. Here begins the concert paraphrase of Wilhelm Ohmen. As in a transcription, the musical sequence follows Wagner's score. 'Six Pieces' Op. 19 is the first collection of piano pieces by Tchaikovsky which contributed significantly to his growing renown as most important Russian composer apart from Anton Rubinstein. Famous contemporary pianists like Nikolai Rubinstein and Hans von Bülow performed Rêverie du soir (Op. 19, No. 1) or Thème original et variations (No. 6) in their concerts in the 1870s. Commissioned by his Moscow publisher P. I. Jurgenson, Six Pieces Op. 19 was composed by Tchaikovsky in the summer and autumn of 1873, i.e. during his time as professor of theory at the Moscow Conservatoire.Bülow had entered 'little changes' in his own copy of the first edition of Variations Op. 19/6. There is, however, no documentary proof which of Bülow's changes Tchaikovsky eventually included in the Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l’auteur of Op. 19 published only in 1890. The present new edition therefore contains both versions of the Variations. Tchaikovsky's version of the first edition can be found in the appendix of the present volume, Bülow's version expressly adopted by Tchaikovsky is presented together with Nos. 1-5 in the main text of the volume on the basis of the Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l’auteur from 1890.

In autumn 1765 Mozart’s family was in Holland, not least at the request of Princess Caroline von Nassau-Weilburg. The fame of the prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus had already reached her so that she “had an extraordinary desire to see this child” (according to Leopold Mozart). The Sonatas for Piano K. 26–31 that can also have a violin accompaniment were composed in The Hague. They were published in 1766 and were naturally dedicated to the princess. An early copy which has nothing to do with Mozart was consulted by the New Mozart Edition as a primary source alongside the first edition. Our Urtext edition revises the musical text, deleting the misleading additions from this source.

At the time, Mozart’s genius – recognised at an early age – could only be explained as being God-given. Wolfgang Amadeus and his sister Maria Anna, older by five years, were admired as being "Wunderkinder" (prodigies) on their travels through Western Europe between 1763 and 1766. The piano sonatas “with a violin accompaniment” K. 6–9 were composed in Paris. It is wonderfully fresh and varied music. The piano is joined by a violin that adds colour, but not as an equal partner unlike in the later, great violin sonatas (see HN 77–80). This music is not only ideally suitable for piano and violin teaching purposes but will also allow musicians who already know “everything” to discover some treasures.
