"There is a remarkable force to all of Ornstein's music—a burst of energy, a frenzy and a passion which are ever refreshing to the tired musical ear."—George Gershwin
This original anthology is the first single-volume edition of the works of American avant-garde composer Leo Ornstein (1893–2002). Characterized as a futurist and ultra-modernist, Ornstein created daring, dissonant works that excited both admiration and contempt. A steadfast follower of his own musical instincts, the composer retired from his career as an internationally renowned pianist in the 1920s and continued to compose in obscurity for another half-century. Ornstein founded a Philadelphia-based music school, enjoyed a renaissance of popularity in the 1970s, and completed his eighth and final piano sonata at the age of 97.
These sixteen compositions span eight decades and demonstrate a remarkable diversity of styles, from lyrical to atonal. Contents include Three Moods, Impressions of the Thames, Impressions of Chinatown, A Long Remembered Sorrow, A Morning in the Woods, and other works. Aaron Copland declared a performance of Wild Men's Dance as the most controversial moment of his young life, and as recently as 2002, The New York Times pronounced it "a shocker." Many originally published from 1914 to 1925, these pieces were long out of print until their return in this unique edition, which is sure to captivate intermediate to advanced level pianists and all fans of avant-garde music.

Frédéric Chopin composed his piano trio when he was an 18-year-old student. About the performance of the trio on 31 August 1830 he wrote: “On Sunday we rehearsed the trio. Perhaps because I haven’t heard it for a while, I was very happy with myself (fortunate man!).” Incidentally, Robert Schumann also shared this opinion, writing in a review: “Is it not as noble as possible, more full of enthusiasm than any song ever written by a poet, original in the smallest detail as in the whole, every note music and life?” We agree with this verdict and recommend this trio in our new Urtext edition to all lovers of highly romantic chamber music.

The Czech composer Antonin Rejcha (also Anton Reicha, 1770–1836) was famous as both an experimental composer and as a teacher and theorist. His 36 Fugues for Piano testify to this experimentalism; they can be seen as a type of “Well-Tempered Piano of the new ages”, basing the traditional Baroque fugue on radical new fundaments.
The first edition of this unusual collection was produced in 1803 in Vienna by Reicha’s own publishing company “Au Magasin de l’Imprimerie chimique”. It included both a dedication poem to Joseph Haydn and a comprehensive foreword in which Reicha identifies the characteristics of his compositional style. The second edition (Vienna 1805) included a short theoretical text “Über das neue Fugensystem” (“On the new fugal system”) in the form of a polemic, reacting to his critics, one of whom was Beethoven. Six fugues are based on the themes of other composers (Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, Handel).
The musical text is a corrected reprint of the edition by Václav Jan Sýkora from 1973, which itself was based on the referred to edition from 1805 as well as on the later edition by Tobias Haslinger (Vienna, c. 1828).

One of the finest music manuscripts – for scholarly and practical use
My Ladye Nevells Booke is one of the finest musical manuscripts of the late 16th century. With its 42 compositions, it comprises about a third of the keyboard music by William Byrd – including some of his most popular compositions such as the variations on “Sellinger’s Round” and “All in a Garden Green”.
Byrd himself selected the pieces for this anthology and directed the work of copyist John Baldwin. The meticulous, small corrections, found on almost every page, were most probably written by Byrd himself. The grand coat-of-arms at the beginning refers to Sir Henry Neville of Billingbear (Berkshire) and as such identifies his wife Elizabeth as the dedicatee.
The manuscript did not become public property until 2006 when it was purchased for the British Library. Now it is published in book form for the first time and gives the musician an impression of the richly decorated preserved original volume.
In his commentary, Byrd specialist Oliver Neighbour describes the genesis and history of the work. He also provides information on Byrd’s concept, the chosen repertoire and gives technical details on the notation.

Anniversary edition on the occasion of the 75th birthday of Valentin Silvestrov: 'This work could well be called (in analogy to Bach's 'Art of Fugue') 'Art of Melody' if there were a didactic mission. But here is no 'art' whatsoever, only melodies – flashing moments, captured, frozen in time, songs without words – words which may be lost or forgotten.' (V. Silvestrov)

This very special slipcase edition album features the very best of Ludovico Einaudi for solo piano.
Einaudi's music is universally loved by both musicians and non-musicians, fans of popular music and fans of classical music. His unique, instantly recognisable compositional style is inherently steeped in emotion. It is impossible to play or listen to his music without being affected by it.
The music in this album is largely accessible to pianists of moderate ability, making it suitable both for less capable pianists wishing to progress, as well as further advanced pianists looking for relief from the rigours of the more serious repertoire.
Beautifully packaged and newly engraved, this unique collection includes a special foreword from the composer.

Programme Note
Hans Abrahamsen 6 PIECES FOR HORN, VIOLIN AND PIANO
My ’6 Pieces for horn, violin and piano’ was written in 1984 as a commission from the Danish Radio for a concert where Ligeti’s horn trio should receive its Danish premiere played by Danish musicians.
My trio is based on my work ’Studies for Piano’. While I wrote these studies I tried to ’conjure up’ instrumental parts inside the piano movement. When I received the commission for a horn trio I turned to six of the studies and deepened them by ’screening them’ so that their parts and moods appeared in a clearer way. Furthermore I changed the order of the movements so a new unity appeared, beginning with a steadyly hesitating ’Serenade’ in slow-motion followed by the ’Arabesque’ which hardly gets started before it stops. Then ’Blues’, a melancholy melody and ’Marcia Funebre’, like a fossilized picture with a dramatic threatening outburst ending with a quiet but majestic melody in violin and horn, a melody that disappears in the chords of the piano. Before the last movement ’For the Children’ is a large ’Scherzo misterioso’.
