Publication of the fourth and last book in the “Iberia” cycle in Henle Urtext coincides perfectly with the 150th anniversary Isaac Albeniz's birth. Albéniz had greatly struggled to complete the work because he was very ill. Yet he was able to hand over all of the twelve pieces he had promised to the pianist Joaquin with whom he was friends. Following the sensuous dance rhythms in “Málaga” and the cheerful and lively “Eritaña”, he succeeded in creating a striking musical portrait of the famous Spanish wine-growing region with “Jerez”. “Music has never achieved such a diverse and colourful form,” was the judgement passed on Albéniz’ late Romantic masterpiece by none other than Claude Debussy.

Nineteenth-century Europe's immersion into Romanticism fostered a "back to nature" movement in which artists turned toward folk music for inspiration. This collection spotlights the works of important Russian composers who drew upon and popularized folk melodies of their native country. Forty-four stirring pieces reflect the influence of Russia's peasant songs as well as the tonality and rhythms of music from the Russo-Greek Orthodox Church and Tartar culture. Suitable for intermediate-level pianists of all ages, this collection features contributions from Michael Glinka, hailed a century ago as "the father of Russian musical art." Additional contributors include Alexander Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolas Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and other composers. Reprint of the Carl Fischer, New York, 1915 edition.

Famous for his fiery, forceful, and passionate playing, Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate (1844–1908) was equally renowned for the sweetness and purity of his tone and his impeccable technique. His works are steeped in the colorful traditions of his native land, drawing upon Spanish airs and dances to display the depth and richness of the violin's capabilities. This practice and performance edition with a separate, removable violin part contains three of the composer's best and most challenging pieces for violin and piano: Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs); Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25, based on the opera by George Bizet; and the exhilarating Introduction and Tarantella. Reproduced from authoritative editions, these works are essential to the repertoire of all serious violinists.

This volume contains all of Beethoven’s surviving cadenzas and lead-ins for Piano concertos: both for his own concertos nos. 1–4, for his Piano arrangement of the Violin Concerto op. 61 as well as for Mozart’s Concerto in d minor K. 466. They were in all probability not intended for his own use, as Beethoven’s improvisatory skills were legendary. His pupil and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria, in whose library the unpublished autographs were kept for decades during the composer’s lifetime, might well have prompted him to do so. This Henle edition contains the musical text of the Beethoven Complete Edition that has been put into a new order and updated.Piano Concerto no. 1 in C major op. 15: first cadenza 1st movement Piano Concerto no. 2 in B flat major op. 19: cadenza 1st movement Piano Concerto no. 3 in C minor op. 37: cadenza 1st movement Piano Concerto no. 4 G major op. 58: first cadenza 1st movement Piano Transcription of the Violin concerto in D major op. 61a: cadenza 1st movement Piano Transcription of the Violin concerto D major op. 61a: Transition: 2nd to 3rd movement Piano Transcription of the Violin concerto in D major op. 61a: first cadenza 3rd movement Piano Concerto in d minor K. 466 by W.A. Frédéric Chopin composed his piano trio when he was an 18-year-old student. About the performance of the trio on 31 August 1830 he wrote: “On Sunday we rehearsed the trio. Perhaps because I haven’t heard it for a while, I was very happy with myself (fortunate man!).” Incidentally, Robert Schumann also shared this opinion, writing in a review: “Is it not as noble as possible, more full of enthusiasm than any song ever written by a poet, original in the smallest detail as in the whole, every note music and life?” We agree with this verdict and recommend this trio in our new Urtext edition to all lovers of highly romantic chamber music.

The Czech composer Antonin Rejcha (also Anton Reicha, 1770–1836) was famous as both an experimental composer and as a teacher and theorist. His 36 Fugues for Piano testify to this experimentalism; they can be seen as a type of “Well-Tempered Piano of the new ages”, basing the traditional Baroque fugue on radical new fundaments. The first edition of this unusual collection was produced in 1803 in Vienna by Reicha’s own publishing company “Au Magasin de l’Imprimerie chimique”. It included both a dedication poem to Joseph Haydn and a comprehensive foreword in which Reicha identifies the characteristics of his compositional style. The second edition (Vienna 1805) included a short theoretical text “Über das neue Fugensystem” (“On the new fugal system”) in the form of a polemic, reacting to his critics, one of whom was Beethoven. Six fugues are based on the themes of other composers (Haydn, Bach, Mozart, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi, Handel). The musical text is a corrected reprint of the edition by Václav Jan Sýkora from 1973, which itself was based on the referred to edition from 1805 as well as on the later edition by Tobias Haslinger (Vienna, c. 1828). Works historically important to the development of the fugue New foreword by Roman Dykast (Cz/Eng/Ger)

Like his predecessor Chopin, Debussy discovered new possibilities and refinements in the art of playing and composing for the piano. His compositions and transcriptions for piano four hands are among his most inventive and interesting works. This volume contains Marche Ecossaise, written specifically for piano four hands, and the composer's transcription for four hands of La Mer. These works display both the brilliant pianism at the heart of Debussy's musical imagery and the composer's affinity for the unexpected — a quality that allowed many of his compositions to unfold like highly sophisticated improvisations. Reprinted here from authoritative French editions, they will challenge and delight pianists with their unique qualities. Republication of the Durand et Cie. and Jean Jobert, Paris, n.d. editions.

In autumn 1830 Felix Mendelssohn visited Venice whilst on a great European tour and was intoxicated by his impressions. He said of the local gondoliers: “The gondoliers are now crying out to one another again, and the lights are reflected deep in the water; one is playing the guitar and singing. It is a merry night”. Perhaps it was with this in mind that Mendelssohn wrote four Venetian Gondola Songs between 1830 and 1841 (published in Henle Urtext in the collected volumes HN 327 and 861). Henle are now publishing the four popular, easy-to-play and melodious pieces together in one volume, with a new preface by Ullrich Scheideler.

The music of small forms was to become the focus of the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924). In 1874, after many years spent in the 'provinces', the teacher of Camille Saint-Saëns took the position of organist in Paris; later he worked not only as a church musician but as a teacher as well. In the summer of 1887 Fauré wrote his Pavane Op. 50, originally intended for a concert providing light entertainment, which soon gained wide popularity as an orchestral setting without and with the chorus added by Fauré. The romantic, slightly melancholy melody is a catchy tune which, thanks to the present arrangement, can now also be played on the piano.

In the last scene of Wagner's opera 'The Valkyrie', Wotan, the father of the gods, punishes his daughter Brünnhilde for her disobedience. He wants to curse her to a deep sleep for her to be helplessly at the mercy of the first man who wakes her. At her pleading, he mitigates the punishment and instructs Loge, the God of Fire, to surround the sleeping woman with a ring of fire on her rock. Only the most fearless and freest hero (Siegfried) is to get through the fire and wake Brünnhilde as his bride. Here begins the concert paraphrase of Wilhelm Ohmen. As in a transcription, the musical sequence follows Wagner's score. The motifs and, throughout, the rich sonority of the orchestra, from the deep strings to the high woodwinds, are transferred to the piano with virtuoso idiomatic transfigurations, tremolos and arpeggios in the course of the arrangement. Virtuoso fireworks for the concert hall!

'Six Pieces' Op. 19 is the first collection of piano pieces by Tchaikovsky which contributed significantly to his growing renown as most important Russian composer apart from Anton Rubinstein. Famous contemporary pianists like Nikolai Rubinstein and Hans von Bülow performed Rêverie du soir (Op. 19, No. 1) or Thème original et variations (No. 6) in their concerts in the 1870s. Commissioned by his Moscow publisher P. I. Jurgenson, Six Pieces Op. 19 was composed by Tchaikovsky in the summer and autumn of 1873, i.e. during his time as professor of theory at the Moscow Conservatoire.Bülow had entered 'little changes' in his own copy of the first edition of Variations Op. 19/6. There is, however, no documentary proof which of Bülow's changes Tchaikovsky eventually included in the Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l’auteur of Op. 19 published only in 1890. The present new edition therefore contains both versions of the Variations. Tchaikovsky's version of the first edition can be found in the appendix of the present volume, Bülow's version expressly adopted by Tchaikovsky is presented together with Nos. 1-5 in the main text of the volume on the basis of the Nouvelle édition revue et corrigée par l’auteur from 1890.

Franz Schubert was one of the most prolific composers of ensemble piano music, and the Rondo in A Major, Op. 107, demonstrates his mastery at writing for one piano, four hands. The Rondo was composed in 1828 for the famous Viennese company Artaria. The work is warm and lyrical in contrast to many of Schubert’s other compositions for four hands. Its themes are highly decorative, treated freely, and full of exciting rhythms.

Bizet's famous opera Carmen was controversial when it was first performed in Paris in 1875. It is a tale of lawlessness, murder and immorality. The naive soldier Don José is seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen, and deserts from the army, only to see Carmen desert him for the glamorous toreador Escamillo. Bizet died suddenly soon after the first 'luke warm' run of performances. Little did he know it would become acclaimed world wide for the next 130 years! The three best tunes from Carmen including "Toreador's Song". The optional companion CD allows for each movement to be practised separately, (and slowly) before putting the whole thing together - ideally in the company of another human!

Vaughan Williams began this work - his earliest known piece for a solo instrument with orchestra - in 1896, shortly after returning to the Royal College of Music to study composition with Stanford, and completed it in 1904. After his death, the manuscript was donated to the British Library, and it was here that the pianist Mark Bebbington rediscovered it in 2010, subsequently recording it for Somm Records. The work shows influences of late nineteenth-century composers, but also hallmarks of Vaughan Williams's later style and maturity. As such, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the composer's development, as well as being a powerful work in its own right. This is its first publication; a study score of the orchestral version is also available on sale. Orchestral material is available on hire/rental.

On 23 August 1841 Chopin wrote to the Viennese publisher Mechetti: “I currently have a manuscript available for you. It is a kind of fantasia in the form of a polonaise that I would call Polonaise”. Chopin’s uncertainty about the title is only too understandable. The work begins as a proud polonaise. Then a passage bursts in during which an octave a is relentlessly played more than thirty times. This almost modern sounding passage leads into a mazurka that seems to come from a different, enraptured world. Henle are now publishing this “kind of fantasia”, previously only available in the edition of all the polonaises (HN 217), in a revised single edition.

Whereas numerous French composers of the time tried to breathe new life into the larger forms of instrumental music, Chabrier concentrated on the smaller dance and character forms. The “Bourrée fantasque” was composed in 1891 and was the culmination of his piano works. The strictly regulated, lively court dance of the time is enriched by unusual harmonies and rhythms and therefore appears in a completely new light. Our edition of the “Bourrée Fantasque” (that is “whimsical bourrée”) is the first critical edition to consult all of the sources. The work is particularly characteristic of Chabrier’s style that oscillates between nostalgia, avantgarde and parody.
