Die beiden 1818 bzw. 1819 entstandenen Dresdner Messen Webers als Eroffnungswerke der neuen Gesamtausgabe lenken den Blick auf eine unbekannte, aber durchaus beachtenswerte Seite des Weberschen Schaffens. Die Es-Dur-Messe schrieb Weber zum Namenstag Friedrich Augusts I. von Sachsen, die G-Dur-Messe zur Jubelhochzeit des sachsischen Konigspaars, wobei Maria Amalia Augusta in diesem Falle Widmungstragerin sein sollte. Als Widmungskompositionen durften diese Messen ohne Erlaubnis des Konigs nicht ausserhalb Sachsens aufgefuhrt werden, so dass der Verbreitung der Werke zunachst enge Grenzen gesetzt waren, obwohl Weber wiederholt Ausnahme-Genehmigungen erwirken konnte. Fur die Edition stellten die Autographe die Hauptquelle dar. Dem Hauptnotentext mit Anhang (ein von Weber neu unterlegter Abschnitt des Offertoriums WeV A. 3) folgt eine ausfuhrliche Darstellung der Werkgenese und Werkuberlieferung, dann ein Kapitel mit Quellenuberblick, -beschreibung und -bewertung und schliesslich der Editionsbericht zum Noten- bzw. zum Gesangstext. Dieser enthalt ein Verzeichnis der Varianten, Lesarten und Anmerkungen, in dem Entscheidungen des Herausgebers begrundet oder bewusst nicht angeglichene zweifelhafte bzw. mehrdeutige Stellen des Notentextes, die im Haupttext durch Sternchenverweise gekennzeichnet sind, diskutiert werden.
