Sleep Song - Medium voice by Elizabeth Alexander. For Vocal Solo (Medium voice and piano). Art Song. Children. Moderately Easy. Text language: English. Duration 4 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-061-01). With Text language: English. Children. While watching a beloved child slumber, a parent contemplates those things that sleep brings: a release from the drama of the day, deep cycles of breath, and complete authenticity.Composer's Note: The small, disciplined form of "Sleep Song" - nine 9-syllable lines - is one which my friend and poet Ann Silsbee explored throughout her intimate book, "Naming the Disappeared." What captured my musical imagination was the rhythm of breathing reflected in this poem, a rhythm of which singers are viscerally aware. What captured my spirit was nearly the same thing: the beauty, power and vulnerability of breath itself, that most basic sign of life.Range: c'-f".

The Gospel Isn't Written In the Bible Alone - Low voice by Elizabeth Alexander. For Vocal Solo (Low voice and piano). Art Song. Moderate. Text language: English. Duration 5 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-082-00). With Text language: English. A gospel hymn to the sacredness of all creation, inspired by this anonymous quote: "God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees, and flowers, and clouds, and stars." This sweet and soulful song welcomes some rhythmic and melodic improvisation, within a basic gospel style.Composer's Note: The inspiration for this piece began with a quote from one of my favorite free thinkers, the provocative Protestant reformer Martin Luther, whose words I came across in an old anthology of religious writings: "God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees, and flowers, and clouds, and stars." What a fabulous quote, I thought. Wouldn't that sentiment make for a wonderful song? However, after an afternoon of exhaustive research, Luther Seminary research librarian Bruce Eldevik reported to me that it was highly unlikely that Luther was the source of the quote. (Thanks anyway, Bruce!) I was a little disappointed, but that didn't keep me from using this anonymous quote as the inspiration for this song.Range: a-b'/d".

Moderately Easy. Text language: English. Duration 3 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-087-01). With Text language: English. Freedom.
