Die Gedanken Sind Frei (Vocal duet version) (16th c. German protest song). Arranged by Elizabeth Alexander. For Vocal Duet (vocal duet: alto voice, baritone voice and piano). Art Song. Freedom. Moderately Easy. Text language: English. Duration 3 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-087-01). With Text language: English. Freedom. "Die Gedanken sind frei" - "My thoughts are free" - was the rallying cry and protest song of the German Peasant Wars, class uprisings which predated the French Revolution by two centuries. The song reappeared in the 1960s, popularized by Pete Seeger. Here, this timeless demand for free thought is given a feisty new English singing translation and an arrangement full of wit, color, surprises, and some healthy defiance. (Fie!).

A Love Like That - Low Voice by Elizabeth Alexander. For Vocal Solo (Low voice and piano). Art Song. Love. Moderate. Text language: English. Duration 4 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-094-00). With Text language: English. Love. Daniel Ladinsky's elegant modern renderings of the works of Hafiz have introduced countless readers to this ancient Sufi poet's powerful philosophy of gratitude, openness and joy. This generosity of spirit is captured in Elizabeth Alexander's warm musical setting of one such rendering: "Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth: You owe me. Look what happens with a love like that: it lights the whole sky."Composer's Note: As a scholar, I am inclined to carefully scrutinize the texts I set to music, making sure they are authentic, accurate and properly attributed. Years of university training lead me to research sources, question assertions, and take great care with my facts. However, as a composer and musician, my behavior is more apt to lean towards that of a eager lover or bright-eyed magpie. I say this with neither pride nor shame, but instead with self-knowledge, for artists are well known to love shiny things: beauty, delight, patterns, color, intoxicating sounds, musical turns of phrase, and ideas which open the mind and heart. It was with both minds that I approached the lyrical and engaging work of poet Daniel Ladinsky. Neither a purist nor an academic, Ladinsky's popular Hafiz-inspired renderings have inspired passionate debate among poetry lovers, Sufi scholars, and Farsi speakers, all trying to ascertain to what extent these poems are translations, as opposed to original poems. For this reason, I waited a long time before setting a Hafiz/Ladinsky poem to music, but in the end, the magpie in me won out. Spontaneous gratitude knows no restraint: I composed this song as a simple offering to the power of limitless generosity, in honor of my parents' 50th wedding anniversary.Range: f#-b".

No One Gets A Program (Vocal Duet) by Elizabeth Alexander. For vocal duet: high voice, medium voice and piano. Moderate. Text language: English. Duration 6 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-095-07). With Text language: English. "In the concert hall of life, no one gets a program." - Dutch proverb. This song might start out as a simple blues riff tune, but it soon gleefully elaborates on the proverb's wry sentiment, taking the singers and audience through a "concert hall" of wildly unexpected possibilities. Funny and sassy and poignant, this song overflows with whimsy, philosophy, and joie de vivre.Composer's Note: This proverb burned a hole in my pocket for over 10 years before I found the opportunity to bring its musical possibilities to fruition. What a blast it was to write! (Sometimes being a composer is so fun I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm awake.).
