An Ark of Stars (from So Many Corners) (Full Score) by Elizabeth Alexander. For Soprano voice and Orchestra (Soprano voice solo, 2.2.3.2,2.2.0.0, timpani, percussion, piano, celeste, harp, strings). Moderately Advanced. Full Score. Duration 3 minutes. Published by Seafarer Press (SF.SEA-040-03). This 3-minute movement from "So Many Corners" is a showpiece for a dynamic soprano. The simple words of Rose Auslander, who spent the Second World War in the Czernowitz ghetto, speak volumes about hope and restoration: "In the ocean waits an ark of stars, for the surviving ashes after the flood of fire." Elizabeth Alexander's musical setting of Auslander's stark and compelling words pours forth with delicacy, ferocity and compassion.

With Heart and Voice by David Gillingham. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Bb Clarinet 1, 2, 3, Bass Clarinet, Contrabass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, 2, 3, F Horn 1/2, F Horn 3/4, Trombone 1/2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Piano, Timpa). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 9:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.05321). With Heart & Voice was commissioned by Apple Valley High School Bands, Scott A. Jones, director (Apple Valley, Minnesota), to commemorate the 25th year of existence of this high school. Apple Valley High School's strong commitment to the arts was a major factor in my decision to take on this commission. After visiting the school in December of 2000 and meeting many of the students, faculty, and administrators, I became greatly inspired.Thematically, the work is based on the Apple Valley High School Alma Mater, an old Spanish hymn which has made its way into most church hymnals under the name of "Come, Christians, Join to Sing." It is perhaps fate that this hymn, a particular favorite of mine, happens to be the tune used for the Alma Mater. Christian Henry Bateman wrote the words for the hymn in 1843 and the first verse contains the line, "Let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice." Hence, the title, With Heart and Voice. What better way to celebrate 25 years of this great high school than with our "hearts" and "voices." The "voice" in this case is the music and the "heart" is the emotion that the music renders in celebration. Although the work is largely celebratory in nature, it begins with a feeling of reticence and apprehension, much like the beginnings of Apple Valley High School. It was at one time only an idea or perhaps only a sketch in the mind of the architect. Small fragments of the Alma Mater are heard in the opening moments of the piece. The piece gains momentum, texture and volume in this opening section culminating in a dramatic statement of the first four notes of the theme. A calmness follows and a lyrical flute solo enters. This new material represents the uniqueness of the "mission" of a new school which will have roots in academic excellence and commitment to the visual and performing arts. The euphonium echoes the flute and soon more instruments join in and the section culminates with a dramatic fanfare. This is followed by a transitional section with much dissonance and rhythmic activity, equated to the challenge of bringing life to this new school. A glorious statement of the Alma Mater follows signifying the dedication of Apple Valley High School, twenty five years ago. The ensuing section begins as a fugue with underlying unsettling rhythmic activity in the percussion. The obvious reference of this section is the challenge-maintaining the goals and mission of the high school. The section becomes frantic and desperate, but soon subsides into peacefulness. The peacefulness is stated by the marriage of the "Alma Mater " theme and the "Mission" theme. . .after all, for the High School to survive, it must never forget its mission. An extended finale follows which celebrates both themes in playful, joyful, and dramatic exuberance.

Paschal Dances by David Gillingham. For Percussion Ensemble (Percussion 1 (4 small concert toms, 4 congas, crash cymbals, voice), Percussion 2 (4 large concert toms, 4 bongos, voice), Percussion 3 (5 timpani, tambourine), Percussion 4 (crotales, snare drum, voice), Percussion 5 (bells, temple blocks, voice), Percus). Medium difficult. Score only. Duration 10:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.01851). Dedicated to Robert Hohner and the Central Michigan University Percussion Ensemble, "Paschal Dances" is based on the first two lines of the famous Gregorian Easter sequence, "Victim paschali laudes" (Praises to the Paschal Victim). Motives and phrases of the chant are used to unify the work which comprises an Invocation, 4 Dances, 2 Interludes, and a Benediction. In the opening Invocation, the first phrase of the chant tune is played by the orchestra bells and consequently, the first five notes are harmonized by the marimba. The orchestra bells play both phrases of the first line of the chant at the close of the section. Dance I, in fast tempo, is dominated by membrane instruments with interjections of the second line of the chant tune being played by keyboard instruments. The section segues into the first Interlude, characterized by bowed vibraphone and a dirge-like presentation of the first five notes of the chant in the piano. Following, in the same slow tempo, is Dance II, which features chanting of male voices in canon on each of the three phrases comprising the second line of the chant. The first phrase of the chant undergoes metamorphosis in Dance III, becoming a whole-tone configuration. The dance is set in a lively 6/8 meter with periodic episodes of duplets against the triplet division. At midpoint, the dance breaks into quadruple meter with the first phrase of the chant played by the vibraphone moving in triplets. The dance returns to 6/8 meter and elides with the second Interlude, in slow tempo, where fragments of the chant are heard in the bells, chimes and marimba. Following a brief silence, Dance IV ensues with the marimbas elaborating on the whole-tone motive used in Dance III. In very fast tempo, the movement climaxes on a glorious G-flat major chord, which also articulates the beginning of the Benediction. Accompanied by all mallet instruments playing the motive of the first phrase of the chant in different rhythms, the piano, along with voices, state a haunting motive derived from the second line of the chant. The work ends with three tolls of a "questioning" chord, with each articulation followed by an arpeggiated version of the chord in the upper register of the piano.

Amapola by Helen O'Connell. Arranged by Marion Evans, Myles Collins. For big band with female vocal. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2105). This is the original Helen O'Connell version of Amapola taken from her 1957 album 'Green Eyes,' as recorded with the Marion Evans Orchestra. The original Marion Evans manuscript was used, this is not a transcription. However, it has been modified slightly by the addition the 'as-played' dynamic markings on the instrument parts. In addition, the chart has been written out in full, rather than using the original DS al Coda indications. The chart calls for the entire sax sextion to double clarinets. However, an alternate set of sax parts has been included on the reverse of the originals that avoids the need for clarinet doubles, making the chart playable by an AATTB line-up throughout. The vocal key is F.

Tangerine by Helen O'Connell. Arranged by Hal Mooney, Myles Collins. For big band with female vocal. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2154). Tangerine was originally a vocal duet hit for Helen O'Connell in her time with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. This version is from her 1951 Capitol Records sessions, though not in the end recorded and released. It is not a transcription, but a re-score of the Hal Mooney manuscript. The only change is to augment the brass up to 8 voices from the original 7, and to score the vocal chart 'as sung' by Helen and Peter Marshall, including Helen's signature lyric changes - "with mascara'd eye and chapeau by Dache..." . This is a boy / girl duet, with the boy taking the slow first chorus and the girl the second, up tempo chorus. The style and structure of the arrangement is based around the earlier Dorsey version, though without the instrumental tutti passage in the middle. The little alto sax solo which leads to the girl vocal is improvised. There are no sax doubles and the vocal keys are F (male) and C (female).

I've Got A Feelin' You're Foolin' by Helen O'Connell. Arranged by Marion Evans. For big band with female vocal. Swing. Difficult. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2163). This is the actual Helen O'Connell version from her "Here's Helen" album, as recorded with the Marion Evans Orchestra. This chart is not a transcription and has been recreated from the original manuscripts. It is an up-tempo swinger opening in the key of C and modulating to Db and D for the instrumental passages, with the vocalist returning in D and moving to Eb for the shout. The band parts, whilst not hard, do need to be played with good sectional discipline in order to pack the punch that the arrangement demands. The chart is written for 5/4/4/4 with no Sax doubles. The vocal keys are C modulating to D and Eb. Trumpets 1-4: Eb6, C6, A5, A5 Trombones 1-4: Bb4, Ab4, G4, G4 Vocal key: C to D to Eb Female Vocal Range: G3 - C5 (11 steps) as sung.

I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me by Helen O'Connell. Arranged by Marion Evans. For big band with female vocal. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2166). This is the original Helen O'Connell version from her 'Here's Helen' album, as recorded with the Marion Evans Orchestra. This chart is not a transcription - the original manuscript was used. The arrangement opens at a slow, bluesy tempo with muted brass over clarinets, and the first vocal chorus maintains the tempo and feel. The chart then kicks into double time for a punchy, up-tempo final chorus one step up from the first. The reeds were originally scored for 3 clarinets (AAT) and 2 bass clarinets (TB). However, recognizing that having two players doubling bass clarinets is not something that many bands will be able to cope with, alternate sax parts have been included on the reverse of the pages which leave ATTB on saxes, and the lead alto doubling clarinet. The vocal key is Eb modulating to F.

It Could Happen To You by Helen O'Connell. Arranged by Frankie Ortega, Myles Collins. For big band with female vocal. Swing. Medium. Full score and set of parts. Published by Lush Life (JL.LL-2179). Here is another original Helen O'Connell chart as played by her on her many concert tours. The tune was written by Johnny Burke & Jimmy van Heusen for the Paramount film "And the Angels Sing". This arrangement is not a transcription, but a re-score of the original Frankie Ortega chart. To the best of our knowledge this chart was not commercially recorded, hence there is no audio sample. The chart opens colla voce, just voice and piano, joined in tempo (100) by the band for the first chorus. In typical O'Connell style, the chart picks up into swing (180) for the final chorus. The saxes are scored to double clarinets, although alternate parts on the reverse which eliminate the need to double have been provided. The vocal key is C throughout.
