Concertino for 4 Percussion by David Gillingham. Percussion Ensemble. For Percussion (solo percussion 1 (timpani, bells, crash cymbal, suspended cymbal, bass drums, tam-tam), solo percussion 2 (marimba, xylophone, tam-tam), solo percussion 3 (marimba, hi-hat), solo percussion 4 (vibraphone, chimes, triangle, bass drums), piano). Concertos. Medium difficult. Piano reduction. Duration 9:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.02872). The original conception of this work, Concertino for Four Percussion and Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble, Joseph Missal, conductor and Wayne Bovenschen, Professor of Percussion studies. The Concertino or "small concerto" seeks to exploit keyboard, membrane, and auxiliary percussion instruments with the marimbas, xylophone, timpani, vibraphone, and bass drums as the featured instruments, assisted by crash cymbals, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, bells, chimes, triangle, and hi-hat to enhance both the ensemble and the solo instruments. Two thematic motives are used as a point of departure for this work. Both appear in the slow and mysterious introduction. The first, played by the marimbas, is dramatic and the second is haunting and played by the vibraphone and bells. The following Allegro is structured similar to a rondo with recurrences of both themes interspersed by episodic sections. The first theme, however, is transformed into a very lively arpeggiated tune played by the xylophone and marimba. The coda is marked by a relentless rhythmic competition of two sets of bass drums which accompany the primary thematic material as first heard in the slow introduction. The work draws to a resounding conclusion when the second haunting theme is stated dramatically in tour de force by the brass.Concertino for Four Percussion is also available for performance with Wind Ensemble (CAP 02870) and Piano (CAP 02872).

Ripeness by Phillip Long. For Percussion Ensemble (Percussion 1 (bells, xylophone), Percussion 2 (bells, chimes, xylophone (can be shared with Percussion 1), suspended cymbal), Percussion 3 (Vibraphone), Percussion 4 (4-octave Marimba), Percussion 5 , Cymbals: sizzle cymbal, suspended cymbal (can use mult). Percussion Music. Medium. Score and parts. Duration 4:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11950). Ripeness is a short concert-style overture that uses, to the point of annoyance, a [0267] tetrachord, a nearly ubiquitous soundset found in modern literature, including music for concert bands, orchestras, and marching bands. Ripeness is a legal term describing when a claim is ready, or ripe, for adjudication. Among other reasons, courts avoid unripe cases because the facts are too abstract. This work avoids any abstractness by delineating the overarching motive clearly. Moreover, by the end of this work, the [0267] tetrachrod is certainly overripe and ready for the rubbish. This piece is for the developing percussion ensemble. The Northern Nash Percussion Ensemble (Rocky Mount, NC) commissioned Ripeness for performance at the 2006 Bands of America National Percussion Festival.

The Lost by Andrew Stout. For Percussion Ensemble (Player 1 - Bells, Chimes, Low Tom, Maracas, Player 2 - Xylophone, Chimes, Low Tom, Player 3 - Vibraphone, Temple Blocks, China Cymbal, Player 4 - Vibraphone, Claves, Brake Drum, Player 5 - Marimba, Suspended Cymbal, Player 6 - Marimba (can share with Play). Percussion Music. Medium. Score and parts. Duration 8:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11860). I've always been a big fan of the "large" percussion ensemble, and this piece is no exception being scored for 11 players and enough instruments to fill a stage. The two main components are a sextuplet-based processional theme, and a light-hearted mixed meter swing theme. Woven throughout the piece is an ostinato that first appears as a timpani solo, and then reprises on various other instruments in different forms and contexts throughout the piece (listen for it on keyboards during the swing section).I tend not to write music about a specific event or thing. Most of my compositions are inspired more by general concepts of emotion and mood. The processional theme tries to capture a feeling of searching in desperation - of dark forces in slow deliberate pursuit of those who would evade capture. The melody is based upon the notes of G, C-sharp, and D (one, sharp-four, and five). The use of sharp-fourths in the melodic structure here adds tension and the minor key gives it a dark feeling. The running sextuplets add energy. The swing themes, while much more light-hearted, have somewhat of an off-balance feel through the use of mixed-meter grooves. I am fond of "tight" harmonies, so here I used chords based on a one-two-five interval. The use of the 2nd in the chord structure (instead of the 3rd) along with added dissonant tones provides more melodic tension. A vibes duet during the swing section is in a "question-and-answer" style that evokes a calling between two individuals - perhaps separated by a great distance and seeking each other.Drums, featured later, add something of a tribal flavor. The mixed meter continues the off-balanced feel, while the increased sonic levels add excitement. A quiet keyboards-only ballad near the end incorporates both the use of sharp-fourths and seconds melodically, but in a much different atmosphere. It represents a feeling of quiet loneliness or solitude. So, you have: desperation, darkness, tension, energy, an off-balance feeling, a calling, excitement, and loneliness. I hope you enjoy it.- Andrew Stout.

Quakers and Conures by Rodney Money. For Percussion Ensemble (xylophone, vibraphone, marimba 1 (4-octave), marimba 2 (4.3-octave), timpani, percussion 1 (snare drum), percussion 2 (cymbals, closed hi-hat, small suspended cymbal), percussion 3 (4, tom-toms), percussion 4 (cowbell, bass drum)). Percussion Music. Medium. Score and parts. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11560). Quakers & Conures was inspired by these mischievous, intelligent, feisty little clowns from Mexico to South America. There are also species of conures in the Caribbean Islands. The Aratinga genus of conures is Latin for "little macaw." The macaws have been described as the majestic rulers of the parrot kingdom, but the amazons would argue with that comment. Being the majestic little macaws that they are, there is a little fanfare motive played by the xylophone throughout the piece that represents them. The United States had a conure, the Carolina Conure, before they became extinct in the twentieth century. It was not the pet trade that caused this travesty, but the heartless farmers who shot them by the thousands. Education is the key to preventing present-day conures from suffering the same fate of the Carolina Conure. The conures inspire the light, colorful mood of the piece, while the quakers provide the reason why I wrote the composition for nine percussionists. I had the pleasure of owning a quaker named Sydney before I came to college. Out of my birds, he was the best talker. Sydney thought he was the largest bird in the house, but I had to rescue him every time he ventured too close to Louie, my Greater Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. I did not want my thirteen-inch, fluorescent green bird to lose his head. Sydney did get along with my Orange-winged Amazon, George. They were the best of friends. Sydney liked to splash George and me from his water dish every chance he got. He was quite a character, spending more time on his back than on his feet. Without Sydney, Quakers & Conures would not have the energy and excitement that the composition calls for. Sydney is now living with a twelve-year-old boy and his family in Winston-Salem, NC. Quakers & Conures is dedicated to Sydney, the Carolina Conure, and all the quakers and conures of the world.

Percussion Music. Difficult. Score and parts. Duration 11:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10630). The idea for this piece began to manifest itself early in the fall of 2000, with the original sketches following soon thereafter. I had intended to create a work that would depict different episodes in a day of war. By spring of 2001, the project had been moved to the back burner with no definite plans for completion. The following fall, I was able to revisit my sketches. Work had resumed for only a couple of weeks when our nation was struck by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The flood of emotions that followed fueled my desire to see this project come to fruition. Focusing the direction of the project became increasingly difficult as the piece began to morph into something completely different than what had been originally intended. I had considered changing the title to An Act of War and new sketches were composed to depict the actual events of 9/11. As I grew increasingly frustrated with the progress of the work, I found that I did not want to glorify the attack on our homeland. I then looked back at the original ideas for the piece, ...and opted not to make the work programmatic in the traditional manner, but rather to let listeners conjure up images based on their own experiences.

Vortices. (Drum Set Feature). By Steve Riley. For Percussion Ensemble (Drum Set, Percussion 1 (flexatone, trash cymbal, suspended cymbal, 2 timbales, tambourine, maracas, plastic shaker, metal shaker, egg maracas, mark tree, bell tree, cowbell, woodblock, 2 bongos, triangle, finger cymbal), Percussion 2 (xylophone, claves, g). Percussion Music. Medium difficult. Score and parts. Duration 15:45. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10620). When I set out to compose this piece for drum set and percussion ensemble, I knew that I wanted to create a work for drum set with a solo part would be (mostly) specifically notated. However, I wanted it to serve as a salute to my favorite drum set players, rather than attempt to create a composed drum set part that would function more like a multiple percussion piece. Thus, there are some obvious references and "licks" as an homage to my favorite players... and percussionists. -Steve Riley.
