Music for Viola and Percussion was written for two of Charles Knox's former students, Amy Leventhal, violist, and Scott Douglas, percussionist, who are now professional recitalists. They premiered this work on their Atlanta-based "Primrose Series" of concerts in the Spring of 1998.Each instrumentalist participates equally throughout. The one-movement work is in six sections. Each section (after the first) begins with a metric modulation into a different meter. Beginning slowly, the pulse of the music gradually increases into the fourth section, where the climax of the piece is reached, and gradually decreases in the fifth and sixth. Thematically the composition could be described as an arch form: the last section is derived from the first (but in a different meter) and the next-to-last from the second.

Dedicated to American marimbist Michael Burritt, "Off Axis" includes an impressive virtuosic (yet idiomatic) solo part. Glassock uses the ensemble as a sounding board for the solo marimba with much rhythmic interplay and imitation. Constantly changing meters (4/4, 7/16, 9/16, 3/4, etc.) before settling in 4/4 for the drum solo section. Wonderful piece for a university student recital or for the professional.

The title is taken from the Italian word for bassoon, Fagotto which literally means "bundle of sticks." This piece was commissioned by Barrick Stees, professor of bassoon at Michigan State University and premiered by Mr. Stees and Keith Aleo at the Interlochen Center for the Arts summer music festival in the summer of 1998. The unique combination of bassoon and percussion/marimba/vibraphone creates many dark and "woody" colors as suggested by the title of the first movement, "Wood and Wind." This movement explores the lyric qualities of the bassoon in its upper register. The second movement is a rhythmically animated diolog between the percussion and bassoon. The low register punctuations in the bassoon are reminiscent of the percussive baritone saxophone playing of Steve (the "Doctor") Kupka of the Tower of Power horn section.

With two nearly identical set-ups, "Swords of Power" is an impressive piece in two movements: "Orcrest: The Goblin Cleaver" and "Glamdring: The Foe Hammer." The first movement exploits all the possibilities of dialogue between the two performers with a brisk ending of trading 32nd notes. The second movement is much more groove-oriented, with maracas going throughout. While one performer is playing the groove, the other is soloing over top with rock and funk fills. Audiences will love it!
