Enormous demands are placed on the control and manual dexterity of the contemporary drum set player, particularly in the Jazz idiom. Today's drummer is expected to have developed limb coordination to a degree that would have been thought unachievable a few short years ago. This text presents an effective method of dealing with the mastery of drum set coordination by breaking it down into four sections: 1) Ride Cymbal - Right hand; 2) Snare Drum - Left hand; 3) Bass Drum - Right foot; 4) Hi-hat - Left foot. The author clearly states his goals in writing this book: "It is my sincere wish that the materials presented in [this] text will be of considerable help in developing musical approach to the coordination skills demanded of today's drummer." -John Pickering

Drumsense Volume 2 introduces the student to a basic jazz beat, with triplet fills from Drumsense Volume 1 revisited but with hi hat keeping time.
The book includes a chapter on ""jazz independence"" (i.e. snare or bass drum against jazz ride cymbal) which never gets too difficult and is musical and fun for the beginner.
The book also covers subdivided 16th note rolls, but with hi hat timekeeping, which gets quite challenging, and a section on basic stroke technique: accents, taps, down and up strokes.
Overall, the emphasis of Drumsense Volume 2 is on timekeeping (hi hat with foot) and technique (basic strokes).

In this book, you will find no instruction on how to read musical notation. The purpose of this book is not to teach you basic reading skills, but rather how to interpret and play a drum chart.
There are two charts for every song in the book. One will be a standard chart written by a professional copyist. The other will be my own personal shorthand chart I would write if a proper chart were not available. In some cases, I may want to avoid lots of page turns and write my own chart to cut down on the number of pages.
Included are basic charts that are commonly found for various arrangements, and my own personal charts written as if I was hearing this song for a show or a session for the first time.

Straight-Ahead Jazz Drumming provides a step-by-step method devoted to unlocking the mysteries of the jazz drummer's role as an accompanist. Author Jeff Jerolamon has gone beyond the mere coordination patterns that comprise most jazz drumming books to combine informative text, realistic musical examples, and audio tracks that clearly and methodically detail such topics as how to: develop a good, traditional cymbal beat; adorn the cymbal beat with comping figures; play and use basic tension figures; play the cymbal in a contemporary (post 1960) fashion; adorn the contemporary cymbal concept with the rest of the drumset; resolve tensions (resolution points); build excitement behind a soloist; and more. Straight-Ahead Jazz Drumming is excellent for self-study, studio lessons, and college curriculum use.

ISBN 9780786605590. Swing. 8.75x11.75 inches.
Introduction to Swing Style Drumming is a system specifically designed to enable beginning drum students to develop the ability to play swing style music. The objective is to develop coordinated independence between the ride cymbal - played with the right hand, snare drum - played with the left hand, bass drum - played with the right foot, and hi hat cymbal - played with the left foot. Lessons include 380 rhythm patterns written for snare and bass drum. Four rhythm patterns are written in four measure phrases followed by a sixteen measure summary combining the four patterns. All the rhythm patterns are played independently against the jazz swing beat on the ride cymbal. Every lesson builds on those that came before, giving students a chance to practice what they have learned and reinforcing skills that will be used over and over. Includes audio CD with all the lessons from the book. The objectives of this book are as follows: Develop a solid foundation for playing coordinated independence with hands and feet; Develop a feel and concept for playing swing style music; Develop the ability to keep perfect time which is the drummer's most important function; Develop the ability to feel a four measure phrase; Develop the ability to enhance the rhythm and accompaniment parts in swing style music; Be prepared to learn more intricate swing beats and play at an advanced level.

Jazz Drumming Essentials and More by Mat Marucci. For Drum Set. Technic. Bill's Music Shelf. Jazz. Intermediate. Book. 76 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.21927).
ISBN 9780786677702. Jazz. 8.5" x 11" inches.
This book is designed for the drummer who has had some experience playing other styles of music but has a desire to learn some techniques and styles of jazz. It is assumed the reader has a knowledge of notes, measures or bars, time signatures, musical notation, and drum notation. A knowledge of the drum rudiments is also desirable. Though the book is meant as an overview to teach basic and essential jazz techniques, it will take someone who is willing to put in the time and practice from being a total jazz novice to the level of being a competent drummer in the jazz idiom. In addition to learning the essential knowledge required to play jazz, the student will also accomplish many intermediate and advanced techniques. I should note that I wrote this book EXACTLY as I teach jazz drumming techniques in my private lessons. This system has been developed and refined over the years and has given excellent, proven results that have produced some fine drummers, many of whom went on to build careers playing and teaching jazz. I am hoping that this book will inspire the reader and student to delve further into the jazz idiom and develop his or her technique and knowledge to the highest level. And even if the student goes no further in the jazz idiom, I am confident that the book will open doors to other avenues that the drums can take and will be benefit the reader in any style of music he or she chooses to play.

Alfred's Percussion Ensemble Series. Form: Transcription. 20th Century; Masterwork Arrangement. 20 pages. Published by Alfred Music Publishing (AP.34456).
George Gershwin's Three Preludes for piano merge early twentieth century American classical music with jazz elements and exemplify the essence of Gershwin's signature sound. Jeremy Clark's arrangement of the preludes caters to the unique demands of a mallet quartet while staying true to the spirit of Gershwin's original composition. Preludes I and III are exuberant with syncopation while Prelude II is a lyric blues. Clark infuses rhythmic elements that enhance the pieces and makes them more accessible to a mallet quartet.
