Sacred Marimbist, The (Volume 1) by David R. Gillingham. Percussion Ensemble. For Marimba (4-mallet) (marimba (5-octave)). Medium to difficult. Duration 20:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.16600). David Gillingham's collection of hymns arranged for solo marimba fills a large void in the repertoire. His 8 masterful settings accentuate the best qualities of the marimba. Most are appropriate at any time throughout the liturgical calendar making this book extremely versatile.Prelude on Be Thou My Vision - Traditional Irish Melody Mary E. Byrne wrote the words to this hymn in 1905 and set it to a gorgeous old Irish melody, Slane. Gillingham used this hymn in a version for symphonic band by the same name that has found its way into the standard repertoire. The melody is haunting and is reminiscent of plainchant and is suggestive of prayer, trust and hope. This setting is appropriate for any liturgical use. Prelude on Nearer My God To Thee - Lowell Mason This hymn, known as Bethany, uses words by Sarah F. Adams, 1841, and music by Lowell Mason, 1856. It is a very intimate hymn of sanctification and grace and is most appropriate during the general church year with the exception of Advent and Easter. It has been said that the orchestra on board the Titanic played this hymn while the ocean liner was tragically sinking. Chorale & Variations on Under the Magical Wing - David R. Gillingham This is an original hymn written by Gillingham that was used as the primary melodic material in a work for symphonic band by the same name. The band work was commissioned by the band boosters of the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Music Department in Greenbelt, MD, in honor of long time band director, Sally Sterrett Wagner. The words to the hymn reflect how, under the guidance of the 'magical wing' (i.e. of Ms. Wagner), students have been challenged to follow their dreams and spread the joy of music throughout the world. This arrangement can be used during any part of the liturgical year. Lord of the Dance - 19th Century Shaker Tune The words of this hymn by Sydney Carter tell the story of the life of Jesus Christ. Its inclusiveness of the entire liturgical calendar make it appropriate for any sacred occasion. The vivacious dance rhythms and changing tonality of this setting make it a perfect selection for special music during the worship service. Meditation on Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling - Will Thompson The words and music for this beautiful hymn were written by Will Thompson in 1880. It has often been used at funerals, but can be used anytime during the litugical year with the exception of Lent, Easter and Advent. According to the teachings of John Wesley, it would be categorized under 'prevenient grace.' Variants on Come Christians Join to Sing - Traditional Spanish Hymn The words of this hymn were written in 1843 by Christian Henry Bateman and set to an uplifting old Spanish hymn. Gillingham used this hymn as the basis of his symphonic band work, With Heart and Voice. The band version features an original melody by Gillingham that partners with the hymn and is featured in Variation II of this setting. The hymn celebrates grace and would be appropriate year round in the worship cycle. Toccata on I am Thine O Lord - William H. Donne Fanny J. Crosby wrote the words to this hymn in 1875 based on Hebrews 10:22 in the Bible. William H. Donne wrote the vibrant musical setting. This is a truly uplifting hymn expressing the joy of grace and sanctification. It would be appropriate during any part of the liturgical year other than Lent and Advent. Postlude on Azmon - Carl G. Glaser This hymn, commonly known as O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing, is a favorite of Gillingham, who grew up playing hymns on an old 'pump' organ (harmonium) and then later playing organ in church through high school, college and graduate school. The words were written by Charles Wesley in 1739 and the music by Carl G. Glaser in 1839. The hymn is filled with praise and thanksgiving and is appropriate to use during any part of the church year with the exception of Lent and Advent.

Alan Publications Ignite Series which features entertaining yet flexible pieces for young percussion ensembles. It is a minimalistic work that allows the performers to be part of the composition process. - Any number of pitched or non-pitched percussion instruments may be used by any number of players. - Performers playing pitched instruments read the left-facing page of the score. - Performers playing non-pitched instruments read the right-facing page of the score. - Pitched instrument parts may be played in any octave. On each page, there are five categories of measures: C - Corner Piece E - Edge Piece M - Middle Piece D - Detail Piece F - Final Piece Just as one might approach assembling a puzzle, this work progresses systematically from the corners to the final piece. Once tempo is established by the conductor or a selected performer, each member of the ensemble may begin playing the 'corner piece' of their choice. Players should enter on beat one of a measure but need not start at the same time. Each player should repeat that 'corner piece' as many or as few times as desired before moving to one or more of the 'edge pieces' and again repeat as desired. At any time during the piece, students may also rest or not play for one or more measures. This process continues as each player moves to the 'middle pieces' and 'detail pieces.' Once all performers have reached the 'detail pieces' and are repeating those measures, the conductor or selected performer should cue the ensemble to play the 'final piece' in unison to conclude the work, in effect 'completing the puzzle.-.

Damaged Goods by Brett Dietz. Percussion sextet. For percussion sextet (crash cymbal, ride cymbal, china cymbal, hi-hat, high & low splash cymbal, low-medium-high tom, snare drum, high & low kick drum, low-medium-high metal, low-medium-high wood, high & low maracas, high & low afuce, high & low sand paper, high & low tam tam,). Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-BD-DAG). Composer's notes: Damaged Goods for percussion ensemble was commissioned by and dedicated to Chad Heiny and the Kiski Area High School Percussion Ensemble (Vandergrift, PA). The entire composition was written in an Opera District cafe in Paris. The piece's structure utilizes a variation of themes drawn from rhythmic permutations."This percussion ensemble for six players was commissioned by the Kiski High School Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Chad R. Heiny. Instrumentation consists of non-pitched percussion and found or constructed metal/wood sounds. Each player has a similar instrumental setup of six instruments: a cymbal (crash, hi-hat, ride, splash), a drum (from high tom-tom to low kick drum), a set of metal or wood pairs (unspecified), a scraping/shaking instrument (maraca, afuce, or sandpaper), and a gong (a mix of tam-tams, opera gongs, and wind gongs). Mixed meter and syncopated rhythms dominate the structure, while the ensemble texture moves in "choirs" of metal, wood, scraping/shaking, or drums. Abrasive and terrifying moments-ffff unison gong accents-are juxtaposed against delicate scraping/shaking passages with intricate rhythmic patterns of triplets and quintuplets. All parts are equal in difficulty, providing technical and ensemble challenges for each player. The duration of the piece is relatively short, allowing plenty of rehearsal time to work out some of the more difficult rhythmic issues. Whenever unspecified instrumental sounds are introduced-for instance, metals (high, medium, low) and woods (high, medium, and low)-the selection of said sounds becomes part of the learning/design process. Care should be taken in selecting good/unique/interesting sounds, or perhaps unusual or found sounds. "Damaged Goods" would be appropriate for an advanced high school ensemble or a young undergraduate percussion group." - John Lane Percussive Notes, May 2010.

Slopes by Paul Rennick. Snare drum solo with 3 percussionists. For snare drum solo with 3 percussionists (field snare drum, concert snare drum, piccolo snare drum, 3 high toms (double headed), 3 medium toms (double headed), 3 low toms (double headed), 2 log drums, concert bass drum, 3 sizzle cymbals, ride cymbal, mark tree). Level 5. Score and set of parts. Published by Innovative Percussion (IP.E-PR-SLO). Composer's notes: "Slopes" was originally commissioned by John Roberts in 2005 at The University of North Texas. It was conceived by reflecting on a lecture given in Aspen, Colorado by a physics professor from the University of Chicago. The topic was fractal geometry in nature and avalanche theory. The musical material captures the characteristics of these subjects, with a falling direction and downward sloping motifs."-Slopes" is a work for solo snare drum with percussion trio accompaniment. Combining rudimental and concert techniques, Paul Rennick has created a piece that is technically exciting and musically interesting. The soloist performs on three drums throughout the piece: concert snare, field drum and piccolo snare. The accompanying percussion trio uses combinations of non-pitched instruments (Percussion 1: three high tom-toms, log drum with two pitches, sizzle cymbal; Percussion 2: two medium tom-toms, sizzle cymbal, mark tree; Percussion 3: three large tom-toms, concert bass drum, sizzle cymbal, ride cymbal). The piece has three large sections. The first is characterized by a quick tempo and the use of a concert snare drum by the soloist. The middle section is slower (derived by way of a metric modulation from the opening section) and features the field drum. Following another metric modulation back to the original tempo, the final section features a brief appearance by the piccolo snare drum, followed by the rest of the work featuring the concert snare drum. Largely rudimental in nature, technical demands in the solo part mainly involves the use of paradiddle, drag, roll (open and closed), and flam patterns. A potentially overlooked aspect of the difficulty level involves the execution of many of these techniques at soft dynamic levels, demanding an advanced degree of subtlety and nuance from the soloist. While the accompanying parts are also challenging from a rhythmic and ensemble standpoint, they do not require the level of technical skill required of the soloist, making this work suitable for an advanced high school or undergraduate percussion ensemble looking to feature a guest artist, advanced student, or faculty member. - Jason Baker Percussive Notes, May 2010.
