Rev. Gary Davis: The Video Collection on DVD by Rev. Gary Davis. For Guitar (Flatpicking). Concert/Documentary. Vestapol. Blues. DVD. Duration 105 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.13111DVD). The first two tracks are taken from a short film that played in theatres in the early 1960s. This was shot while Rev. Davis lived in the Bronx. The filmmaker was very interested in the ambience but we do get a chance to see Rev. Davis play. Pete Seeger's Rainbow Quest had one show that featured Rev. Davis along with Donovan and Shawn Phillips. The next two tunes are from this program. In 1969 Rev. Davis traveled to Seattle, Washington to play for the Folkore Society. Tracks 5-12 were filmed by the Anthropology Department of the University of Washington at the home of John Ullman.. This is rough footage but shows Rev. Davis relaxed amongst friends and his trusty cigar! During that stay John was able to take Rev. Davis in to a proper television studio and tracks 15-23 are from this session. These are seminal performances. The independent filmmaker Lionel Rogosin brought Rev. Davis together with other musicians for his film Black Roots. Tracks 24-26 are from this film. This collection ends with some very rough footage from the wedding celebration of John Gibbon (one of Rev. Davis's earliest New York students). This was originally recorded on reel to reel tape and over the years the tape disintegrated. So what we have left is a faint video image with good sound that shows Rev. Davis enjoying himself at a party with friends.

Blues Guitar of Rev. Gary Davis 2- DVD Set by Rev. Gary Davis, taught Ernie Hawkins. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Solos. Grossman-Guitar Workshop. Blues. Beginning-Intermediate. DVD. Duration 176 minutes. Published by Grossman's Guitar Workshop (MB.GW978SDVD). In this double DVD lesson, Ernie Hawkins teaches in detail nine of Rev. Gary Davis' best known blues arrangements. These songs have become well known through the playing of Bob Dylan (Baby, Let Me Lay It On You), Jackson Browne (Cocaine Blues), Hot Tuna (Hesitation Blues) John Renbourn, Stefan Grossman, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Hot Tuna and a host of other musicians (Candyman). Rev. Davis approached playing the blues in several different styles. Each had unique characteristics and ranged from what he called "old fashion picking" to complex playing that explored and extended the blues tradition on the fingerboard. Each arrangement is broken down phrase by phrase and then played slowly on a split screen. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. As a bonus we have included various audio performances of Rev. Davis playing each song.

Funk Infusion by Scott Ward. For Percussion Ensemble (bells, xylophone, vibraphone, marimba 1, *, marimba 2, *, bass guitar (optional), drum set, percussion 1 (congas), percussion 2 (cowbell, shaker, tambourine, triangle), * The two marimba, parts may be performed on one low-A instrument). Percussion Music. Medium. Score and parts. Duration 3:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.12220). The word "funk" has been applied to many different types of music. Funk music often de-emphasizes melody and harmony by bringing rhythm to the foreground, where intricate rhythmic patterns are layered together to create an intense, hard-driving groove. However, the "funk" label has also been applied to music with a more relaxing, mellow groove. Funk Infusion takes both of these contrasting styles and "fuses" them together, creating a piece which has the best of both worlds. The beginning section provides a straight-ahead groove while the contrasting middle section has a more relaxed 12/8 "half-time" feel. The mellow groove slowly builds to a climax, then transitions back into the original groove. Whether you prefer your funk hard-driving or laid back, this composition will have the players and the audience "feelin' the funk" in no time.
