The Opus 210, by Louis Kohler is a delightful collection of 32 pieces ranging from very easy to medium-difficult. Kohler, like many of his contemporaries, Robert Schumann, Peter Tchaikowsky, and later Claude Debussy, wrote collections of character pieces for beginning students to play. The pieces in this collection are lighthearted in spirit with simple harmonic progressions and straight- forward rhythms. They can be categorized as character pieces (short pieces with programmatic titles), which are typical of the Romantic period. Not only do the pieces provide opportunities to stimulate creativity and imagination within each individual player, they also provide excellent oportunities to build technique, musicality and rhythmic skills from the very beginning. Kohler proves that one can build technical skills and musicianship skills while at the same time enjoying the music. The pieces are not overly difficult or lengthy which adds to their charm.

The classical guitar is at its best with music of smaller proportions that is personal, evocative, and imbued with opportunities for subtle, expressive nuances in performance. Like the piano it must stitch together discrete and fading notes into continuous melodies supported by a harmonic background. The joining of Grieg's music and the classical guitar seems to be a most obvious and fruitful endeavor. This collection presents transcriptions from Grieg's best known and loved piano works. They are of intermediate to early advanced difficulty, with detailed fingering indications and extensive notes about the transcriptions and performance suggestions for each piece. This wonderful music, so easily and elegantly translated to the guitar, has previously been overlooked by most guitarists. These arrangements show that the results of the combination is better than might be expected. Standard notation only.

In the early 1700s, Bach's chorales enchanted listeners with their inventive harmonies, chromaticism, contrapuntal motion, and changes of tonal center. Since that time, music students the world over have studied the chorales as a paragon of common practice harmony and voice leading. And by virtue of their sublime beauty, musicians continue to perform the chorales to this day. The four-part texture of the chorales can make their performance on guitar - with its fingering limitations - somewhat problematic. But by sometimes thinning the texture to three or two parts, and sometimes inverting the lower parts (allowing the alto or tenor to temporarily serve as the bass), we've created easy-to-play classical guitar solos that capture all the interest and beauty of Bach's original compostitions. Includes "tab" tablature notation.
