The accurate interpretation of swing rhythm is the most important element in jazz music. This collection of 7 jazz etudes and 11 exercises for solo guitar gives the student practice in playing this rhythmic pattern as well as working on other important skills. The etudes are written in notation only in different jazz styles: Swing, Latino, Bossa Nova, Blues, and Jazz Rock. These etudes develop the ability of the right hand to sound as if two or three instruments are playing simultaneously. All of the etudes have bright melodies and rich jazz harmony. They are intermediate in difficulty. The exercises feature numerous skills, including Swing style, walking bass, Latin style, finger speed, various rhythmic combinations, and broken lines.

A systematic approach to developing technique on the classical guitar must include studies designed to focus on concise, specific techniques and offer musical challenges as well. The studies in this book will assist in the development of certain techniques of right hand touch, right hand finger movement and right hand chordal balance. In addition, this book presents clear and direct left hand technical challenges that promote the development of consistent left hand technique. These musical motives also help to develop the ability to recognize and read note groups quickly and should prove to be most helpful in the continuing quest to improve sight-reading skills on the instrument. Written in notation only.

The product of a 14 year research project, this book contains over 350 studies to thoroughly train the right hand of classical guitarists in the use of all five fingers - adding the little finger to the present four finger technique. These studies build a five-finger technique in the playing of chords, arpeggios, tremolos and harmonics, beginning with the thumb and one-finger combinations and increasing in complexity to the thumb and four fingers. The studies are played over easy, yet interesting, left hand progressions up and down the fingerboard. Postlewate demonstrates how to develop your own right hand studies by including examples from standard classical guitar repertoire pieces by Fernando Sor, Federico Moreno Torroba and Heitor Villa-Lobos at the end of the book. This book is a companion to MB 98711 - HOMAGE TO VILLA-LOBOS and other compositions (music composed, transcribed, arranged and edited by Charles Postlewate for the guitar, using five fingers of the right hand) and its accompanying 60-minute CD, HOMAGE TO VILLA-LOBOS (MB 98711CD). Author Steve Marsh has spent many years playing guitar in the folk clubs of the United Kingdom where Irish music is in abundance. This collection draws from his extensive collection of original arrangements of traditional tunes. The songs vary in style and can be grouped into sets for use in a recital program. Many of the folk songs have been handed down from generation to generation so several versions of a song may exist. Therefore, the author has taken a few liberties with the tempo and rhythmic structures of a limited number of tunes in this collection. In general, the pieces in this album range from moderate standard to difficult. In standard notation only.

This collection presents, for the first time, the complete Mazurkas of Frederic Chopin arranged for solo classical guitar. The Mazurka is the only form the composer embraced throughout his lifetime. The distinctive and personal pieces are unimaginably varied and colorful, ranging from brief and vigorous dances to deep and complex extended works. Always achingly melodic and featuring surprising harmonies not evident in his other compositions, the Mazurkas are a true monument to Chopin's genius. These new arrangements were prepared with rigorous fidelity to the originals, while never sacrificing true playability. Careful attention to every detail of execution combined with thorough notes on each piece and the folk dance tradition that inspired them to make this unique offering truly user-friendly. Musically beautiful, idiomatic and accessible, this monumental collection is a breathtaking addition to the guitar repertoire. Written in standard notation only.

This collection will help spark an interest in the development of an American repertoire for the classical guitar. Traditional Scottish and Irish tunes were transformed by the African rhythms of banjo players, which in turn influenced popular music and led to ragtime, jazz and blues. The amount of folk music in America is staggering. The nineteenth century gave birth to many unique American styles and its songs are an important part of our musical heritage. Even today, quite a few of the tunes in this collection will seem very familiar. Written primarily in standard notation, the exceptions being those tunes in altered tunings which logically appear in tablature only.
