This collection will help spark an interest in the development of an American repertoire for the classical guitar. Traditional Scottish and Irish tunes were transformed by the African rhythms of banjo players, which in turn influenced popular music and led to ragtime, jazz and blues. The amount of folk music in America is staggering. The nineteenth century gave birth to many unique American styles and its songs are an important part of our musical heritage. Even today, quite a few of the tunes in this collection will seem very familiar. Written primarily in standard notation, the exceptions being those tunes in altered tunings which logically appear in tablature only.

Mel Bay Publications is proud to present this intriguing new collection of music for fingerstyle guitar. Selections include: Tango Fleur Bleue; As De Copas; La Modone D'amour; Un Tango d'autrefois; Ma Rose D'alsace; Insaisissable; Cara al Cielo; Sacre Tango; Tangorama; Soir de Pluie; Une Simple Carte Posta; and Joue Contre Joue. Written in standard notation and tablature. Ole Anders Halen began studying electric guitar at age 13. By the time he was 15, he found himself in a touring rock band with several hit records. He was subsequently influenced by the playing style of Chet Atkins and at 17, in order to improve his fingerstyle technique, he began to study the classical guitar. On the recommendation of his teacher, Ivan Putilin, Halen studied classical music at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki where he was later to occupy a guitar teaching position himself. Pieces range from Renaissance and Baroque to the more Classical music of Handel and Beethoven, to contemporary and Romantic compositions from Satie, Calace and Tarrega. This fine solo guitar text, written in notation and tablature, offers a brilliant array of music from many centuries. Composers represented (Aguado, Tarrega, Sanz, Angurea, and others) present a colorful spectrum of the melodies, styles, moods, and temperaments that have characterized guitar music of Spain. The instrumentation on the recording is the solo classical guitar. It is a stereo recording, and it does contain every selection in the book. This book of exercises and studies is designed to develop left hand technique. The book concentrates on eight different technical areas: chords and chord changing skills, barres, shifts, slurs, scales, intervals, extensions, and left hand harmonics. The text is divided into two parts; a section of exercises and a section of study pieces. The exercises are grouped according to the skill areas they concentrate on and are accompanied by explanatory notes. Most of the study pieces concentrate on two or more skill areas. For that reason the particular skill areas for each piece are listed both in the Table of Contents and at the beginning of the piece itself. Study pieces can be easily matched to exercises, and vice versa. The pieces themselves consist of music written originally for guitar, and of transcriptions.

This book is a collection of studies and exercises designed to help the student develop right-hand technique. The first sections deal with the basic skills of rest and free stroke, finger alternation, and arpeggios; developing flexibility and efficiency in right-hand movements. Later sections deal with the more advanced techniques of timbre production, pizzicato, right-hand harmonics, and tremolo. Most of the study pieces have been selected from the great body of classical guitar music. A few have been adapted from other sources such as keyboard and cello.

This collection of etudes, written during the 1970's, was composed as a result of Jimmy Wyble's explorations into the musical worlds of counterpoint, harmony and chord melody improvisation for the jazz guitar. The right and left hand fingerings presented in this book were also developed as techniques needed to improvise jazz in two lines. Jimmy uses very standard jazz guitar chord shapes in these etudes; however, these shapes move through the harmony in lines rather than block chord structures. This broken chord technique creates a unique contrapuntal sound that separates Jimmy from the rest of the fingerstyle jazz guitar world. It is hoped that jazz and classical guitarists playing and working through these etudes will see many familiar chord shapes moving in new ways and creating new sounds. These new harmonic sounds combined with beautiful melodies will inspire any quitarist to new levels of musical creativity. Written in notation and tablature. 92 pages.

This book, written for those with no prior musical experience, is the definitive text for learning C-tuning concert, or classic-style 5-string banjo. Written by the late Frank Bradbury, Banjo Method provides a thorough grounding in music theory and note reading, along with a complete presentation of Mr. Bradbury's unique 5-string concert banjo technique and outstanding solo and duet arrangements by various artists. The technique described here is radically different from that found in other books about the 5-string banjo, and no tablature is used. No plastic or metal picks are used on the right-hand fingers, nor are the fingernails used, but rather the bare fingertips. The hand positions recommended by Mr. Bradbury are not unlike those of a classical guitarist. All in all, this is an uncommon, but valid approach to solo banjo technique. Online audio of select pieces and exercises featuring Rob MacKillop now available.
