Eartraining is a vital (and sometimes neglected) skill that enables musicians to hear ahead in their playing and writing. These unique, modern courses have been used by hundreds of students (from beginners to working pros) at the acclaimed Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. These methods use SOLFEG (the syllables Do, Re, Mi, etc.) to apply the techniques within a key-center based relative pitch framework. Level One works on hearing and transcribing melodies, rhythms, intervals and bass lines and moves on to identify triads and simple progressions. Level Two covers hearing and transcribing triad and four-part chord progressions, key changes, chromatic tones, modal scales, and combining melodic and harmonic dictation.

This solo for left hand alone is sure to appeal to students with its jazzy style and beat. Written in C major, it begins with a descending bass line that sounds very much like the opening of a jazz solo played by a stringed bass. Various accidentals and swing eighth notes are used to further enhance the style of the piece. This solo is also an excellent review of bass clef reading and gets the left hand moving freely around the keyboard.

Here is a new folk song whose melodic contour, harmonic structure, and symmetry with the Robert Burns text are so authentic, that it's hard to believe it's a contemporary composition. Modern day composer Lon Beery truly captures the nature of historic folk music with his setting of My Heart's in the Highlands. An optional bass part in the three-part mixed version, and an optional tenor part in the men's arrangement offer great flexibility in either voicing.

The sounds of Spain are heard throughout this piece, beginning with its fanfare-like introduction and ending with the same material in the coda. It is written in the key of D natural minor and in 3/4 meter. After the 15-measure introduction, the following section is slower and lyrical. Here, the melody is in the right hand and the left-hand using an extended bass figure. This section is expanded by a trill figure that gradually gets faster and leads into a repeat of the melodic material one octave higher. The last 16 measures of the solo are a return to the first tempo and the same thematic material that builds to a full and rich conclusion.

One of our top-selling sheet arrangements of this famous piece. Canon in D is the most famous piece of music by Johann Pachelbel, written in or around 1680 as a piece of chamber music for three violins and basso continuo. Willard A. Palmer's faithful setting is for the late intermediate pianist. Tasteful use of arpeggios, rolled chords, and dynamics brings out a rich, sonorous sound that evokes the original string arrangement. Perfect for weddings, recitals, or any other special occasion.

Students can play this piece "as they like it" because the eighth notes can be either swung or played straight. Written in C major and 4/4 meter, the focus of the piece is the left hand that features a repeating walking bass pattern. If the eighth notes are swung, the solo takes on a more jazz-like character. Either way, it is a jaunty solo filled with rhythmic vitality and lots of patterns for ease in learning.
