The Fall of Lucifer was commissioned for the Silver Jubilee of the Tilford Bach Festival with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. The first performance was given on 13 May 1977. This work is a setting of the first play of the Chester Mystery Cycle, a cycle of 25 plays dating from the late 14th century.
