Popular English Session Tunes by Dave Mallinson. For C Instruments. Solos. Mally's Presents. Folk. Beginning. Book. 36 pages. Published by Dave Mallinson Publications (MB.AM304). ISBN 9781899512669. Folk. 8.25x11.75 inches. Obviously, popular tunes frequently heard in English sessions have been selected for this book. However, there is a slight bias towards the more exotic and slightly more obscure, alongside some of Mally's personal favourites. Also, you'll find several extremely challenging airs towards the end. The tunes are suitable for every instrument associated with traditional music and only 14 notes are required to play them all. They are eminently suitable for playing at country dances, ceilidhs, barn dances and hoe-downs and most have been recorded by notable bands and personalities.

More Airs For Pairs by Matt Seattle. For C Instruments. Solos. Mally's Presents. Folk. Beginning. Book. 20 pages. Published by Dave Mallinson Publications (MB.AD102). ISBN 9781899512713. Folk. 8.25x11.75 inches. Like its companion, AIRS FOR PAIRS, this book contains twenty-one tunes from Britain and Ireland. The first book contains some of the most popular traditional tunes which, the editor feels, should have a place in the repertoire of all musicians who reside in these islands, whatever their chosen specialization. This second book contains more of this core repertoire, but also has some interesting older tunes as well as some more recent music composed in traditional idioms. The balance here is weighted a little more in favour of the slower tunes - for no particular reason. As in the first book the harmonies have been written not to be easy or difficult, but to be musical. I would like to thank Stewart Hardy for playing them all through with me and making many valuable suggestions which I have been pleased to include. Suggested bowings are included in the arrangements. These will work perfectly well, but there are of course other possibilities and personal familiarity with one or another of the native idioms is always a better guide than written instructions. The music is playable on instruments other than violin, and some of the tunes derive specifically from piping and harping, as well as fiddling traditions.

You'll observe that many of the tunes aren't exactly English but within these pages you'll find the repertoire that crops time and time again. A sizable proportion of the tunes have been made popular by The Old Swan Band. The tunes are suitable for every instrument associated with traditional music and only 14 notes are required to play them all. They are eminently suitable for playing at country dances, ceilidhs, barn dances and hoe-downs and most have been recorded by notable bands and personalities.

Great American Marches, Polkas & Grand Concert Waltzes for Acoustic Guitar by Douglas Back. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Solos. Archive Edition. Classic. Intermediate. Book. 96 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.95668). ISBN 9780786678914. Classic. 8.75x11.75 inches. American fingerstyle guitar had its true beginnings with parlor room guitarists in the 19th century who cultivated a written musical tradition modeled after that of European guitarists. Polite society of the time enjoyed stylized "society ballroom dances" including marches, polkas, and waltzes. The works selected for this anthology represent the best of American parlor-salon guitar music. Several of the composers presented here, such as William Foden, Charles DeJanon, and William O. Bateman, are gradually becoming familiar to a new generation of fingerstyle guitarists interested in the classic guitar's American past. Written in notation and tablature. Audio available online.

Russian Folk Songs for Guitar Solo. (Nine Favorite Folk Melodies in Notation and Tablature). By Dusan Borjanic. For Guitar (Fingerpicking). Solos. Bill's Music Shelf. Acoustic Music. Beginning-Intermediate. Book. 52 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.99562). ISBN 9780786682447. Acoustic Music. 8.5" x 11" inches. Russian Folk Songs for Guitar Solo is a selection of nine popular traditional Russian songs arranged for acoustic guitar. In working on the adaptation of these traditional songs I tried to keep to the authentic melodic and rhythmic structure intact. I even took one step further by creating a harmonic structure which preserved the vocal tradition while maintaining the original phrases and rhythmic variations. I also tried to adapt folk guitar technique in my version of these popular and charming Russian songs. The arrangements are in notation and tablature and will be useful for both the fingerstyle steel stringed and nylon stringed guitarists.

Early American Melodies for Flute and Guitar by Leo Welch. For Guitar (Classical). Chamber Music. Bill's Music Shelf. American. Beginning-Intermediate. Book. 32 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.21322). ISBN 9780786681662. American. 8.5" x 11" inches. Brief, tuneful melodies arranged for intermediate flutists and guitarists from early American (1817) popular music. Written in standard notation, these delightful arrangements feature collections of popular melodies from that era as well as airs and dances. In keeping with performance practice of the traditional music played during this time, these arrangements are organized into sets of pieces as they may have been performed during this era. The sets include jigs, slow airs and marches as well as melodies that were popular from the continent. These arrangements are appropriate both for background music as well as public concert performance. The arrangements are derived from a book of flute melodies entitled "Riley's Flute Melodies." Published in 1816 and 1817, this book was possibly used as jazz musicians use lead sheets to develop spontaneous arrangements of pieces depending upon the occasion and the musicians at hand. The guitar arrangements were modeled upon existing guitar practice during that time and use idiomatic guitar devices such as pizzicato and harmonics to provide an imaginative underpinning for the melodies. Many of the arrangements give equal treatment to both the guitar as a harmonic and melodic instrument.
