Interpretations by Roger Cichy. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bb Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Tro). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 9:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10441). "Interpretations" was conceived as a collaborative arts project by composer Roger Cichy for the Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. This commission was designed to encompass several of the arts by drawing on the fine arts, music, and dance within the academy. Mr. Cichy's composition, therefore, is a musical 'interpretation' based on four selected student art pieces, hence the title. Following the completion of the musical 'interpretations,' the academy's dance department choreographed dances based on the newly composed music. "Interpretations" was premiered by projecting the original student artwork on a large screen as the wind ensemble and dance ensembles performed the work live. The opening movement, 'Mask,' based on a three-dimensional black and white mask, reflects the bipolar elements incorporated in its design. Here Cichy uses the brass and percussion in angular melodies, dramatic rhythms, and vertical harmonies to illustrate one aspect of the mask. A lyrical and subdued texture is created by the woodwind section along with subtle percussion to act as the opposing pole. The indicated style for 'Shrouded Figure,' "Sinister yet mysterious," easily describes the character of this movement. Cichy draws on several compositional techniques to enhance the mystery of the unidentified figure in the art piece. The movement titled 'Popped Corn' depicts a single kernel of popcorn as it lies with its energy spent on the burst, now in a motionless state. The music for this movement incorporates a lazy blues style to imitate the lifeless dimensions of the still-life art piece.'Self Portrait' (of the artist, not the composer) contains an array of colors and geometric patterns culminating in an image of a face. In this movement, Cichy's use of irregular meters and quick tempos transposes the energy and impulse created by the artwork. The artwork upon which this composition is based was created by the following student artists:David Corner, MaskElizabeth Zeibig, Shrouded FigureGreer Monaghan, Popped CornMarassa Streniste, Self Portrait.

No Shadow of Turning by David Gillingham. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Bb Trumpet 3, Horn 1/2, Horn 3/4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Ba). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 9:40. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.10991). No Shadow of Turning was commissioned by a consortium of organizations at The Ohio State University in memory of Lois Brock, beloved secretary of The Ohio State University Bands. The work is based on the hymn tune Great is Thy Faithfulness, by Thomas O. Chisholm (words) and William M. Runyan (music).Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no Shadow of turning with thee;Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.Refrain:Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!Morning by morning new mercies I see;All I have needed thy hand hath provided;Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto thee.Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,Sun, moon, and stars in their courses aboveJoin with all nature in manifold witnessTo thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.Refrain.Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!Refrain. The title of the work is taken from the second line of the first verse which perhaps sums up the meaning of the hymn and the faith held by Lois Brock. The work also features optional hand bells, as Lois Brock was an avid hand bell player in her local church. The work begins quietly and somewhat mysteriously on a motive using the interval of the falling fourth of the refrain of the hymn. This material grows and gathers texture and then concludes softly on a rolled G major chord in the marimba. A chorale follows, played by the vibraphone and bells and/or the hand bells. I call this chorale the "Lois Brock Chorale" as it exhibits the warmness of her ever-loving spirit. An interlude follows utilizing motives from the hymn and leads to the flute playing the verse of the hymn. Pursuant to this quiet rendition is a rather aggressive section featuring the timpani and percussion that play with the opening motive of the refrain. This leads to a fugue on the same motivic material that grows in intensity and segues with the trombones playing the hymn tune in march-like style against fanfare-like motives in the trumpets. All this subsides and the hymn is now played by the trumpets against the horns playing the Lois Brock Chorale. The full band joins in on the refrain that rises to a glorious pinnacle and then concludes softly by the euphonium. The material from the introduction is then restated and leads to a final statement of the refrain followed by a peaceful and heavenly benediction.

A Spartan's Dream by Jere Hutcheson. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Oboe 1, Oboe 2, English Horn, Soprano Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Bb Bass Clarinet, Bassoon 1, Bassoon 2, Alto Saxophone 1, Alto Saxophone 2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1,). Band Music. Grade 5. Score only. Duration 7:20. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11181). The Michigan State University Orchestra Program celebrated its 75th anniversary in the academic year 2001-2002. I, among others, was invited to compose a fanfare for brass and percussion to open one of the season's concerts. My offering was titled Spartan Spirit, and it bears the seed of A Spartan's Dream. I liked what I had done in the fanfare, but I felt the need for a larger and more flexible ensemble. The second 'Spartan' creation shares material with the original, but it is expanded to twice the length of the earlier piece. It is now less a fanfare and more a tone poem. The performing forces may vary from the smallest wind ensemble to the largest symphonic band.--Jere Hutcheson.

Northern Light by David Gillingham. Arranged by Percy Aldridge Grainger. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in F 3/4, Tromb). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 4:50. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11241). "Northern Light" was commissioned by the Walled Lake Northern High School Bands on the occasion of the first graduating class in June of 2005. The work incorporates the school's "Alma Mater" for which I was commissioned to write the music for several years ago.The work uses a sonata-like design. It begins with a slow introduction beginning in Ab major using material from the Alma Mater and modulates to Bb major. An allegro exposition follows with a fanfare-like first theme (trumpets) that is celebratory in nature. A short transition leads to the second theme (Alma Mater) in Gb Major presented in a slower and more stately tempo. A development section follows which using fugal counterpoint as its centerpiece with the subject based on the first theme. Alternating episodes develop both themes and a retransition leads the work to the recapitulation of the first theme, this time in Ab Major. A transition dramatically leads to the final presentation of theme 2 (Alma Mater) in C Major with its rhythm augmented. A coda appropriately brings the work to a rousing conclusion.--DRG.

Bannockburn by Bruce Fraser. For Concert Band (1st Flute, 2nd Flute, Oboe*, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, 3rd Bb Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet*, Bassoon*, 1st Eb Alto Saxophone*, 2nd Eb Alto Saxophone*, Bb Tenor Saxophone*, Eb Baritone Saxophone*, 1st Bb Trumpet, 2nd Bb Trumpet, 3rd Bb Trumpet, 1st F). Band Music. Grade 3. Score only. Duration 4:30. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11272). I have a long connection with the town of Bannockburn, as my wife was born and brought up there. It has therefore been a long ambition to write a work based on the history of the town and its most important tale.In 1314, the forces of Edward II and Robert I met on the flat land south of Stirling. Edward had accepted a challenge to relieve Stirling Castel - one of the few Scottish castles still under English control - by midsummer's day. The Scottish forces, although smaller, were better led and better positioned. They won a heroic victory and Edward fled the field and Scotland (narrowly escaping capture). Although it was not until 1328 that the English monarchy (under Edward III) accepted Scotland's right to full independent status, the Battle of Bannockburn marked the end of any English pretensions to control the northern British kingdom.Musically, the opening represents the advance of the English army. The Scots had prepared extra long spears to defend against the expected cavalry onslaught. The tension builds and the tempo increases as the English charge, only to find that the spears are extremely effective. The Scots manage to force the English into retreat and are victorious. I have used tiny fragments of two melodies to build up my own set of working notes - Flower of Scotland, a song which immortalizes the victory, and a song called the Fields of Bannockburn.Hopefully, the music demonstrates the thrill of battle and victory and will also thrill players and audience.

Light of My Soul by David Gillingham. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1, Flute 2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Bb Clarinet 1, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, Bb Trumpet 3, Horn 1/2, Horn 3/4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Ba). Band Music. Grade 3. Score only. Duration 7:35. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11491). Light of My Soul was commissioned by The Gustavus Adolphus College Wind Orchestra, Douglas, Nimmo, conductor, for the occasion of their 2006 European Tour. The work is a fantasia on the hymn Beautiful Savior. It begins slowly in Eb Major with quiet murmurs in the flutes and 1st clarinets underlaying brass playing with motivic material taken from the first two bars of the hymn. This leads to a statement divided between the flutes and the clarinets of the 5th and 6th bars of the hymn serving as a bridge to Bb Major where the horns sing a new and expressive melody. This melody is a harmonic "partner" to Beautiful Savior, and will eventually combine with the hymn. Trumpets are added for the final phrases of the new melody followed by a full band transition, based on the opening motive of Beautiful Savior, accelerating to a new section in D Major. The new section is characterized by a sense of urgency and features fugal counterpoint on a subject derived from the first phrases of the hymn tune. Ensuing is a section featuring timpani, crotales, temple blocks and tom-toms under motives from the first phrase of the hymn heard in various harmonic guises. The intensity grows, accelerates and modulates to E Major where the piccolo and piano play a spirited counterline accompanying Beautiful Savior played by saxophone quartet. A full band transition slows down the motion, diminishes in volume and modulates to Db Major where both the Beautiful Savior tune and the new melody are harmoniously combined, with oboe singing the new melody and the horns on the hymn tune. The new melody and the hymn tune progress to a joyous and dramatic conclusion on the last phrase and then fade into a benediction begun by the flutes playing motives from the 5th bar of the hymn tune. The work ends peacefully in Db Major with bells and vibraphone echoing the earlier flute motives.--DRG.

The Led Page by Daniel McCarthy. Arranged by Stuart Johnson. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in F 3, Trumpet in Bb 1/2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Trombone 1/2, Euphonium, (Baritone T.C.), Tuba, Do). Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 7:05. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11571). "The Led Page" is a symphonic band adaptation of my orchestral work, "Turn the Page." The writing of "Turn the Page" was the result of my association with conductor and good friend Jung Ho Pak (New Haven Symphony and World Youth Symphony Orchestras). Maestro Pak and I met at The Interlochen Arts Camp where we are both faculty and we collaborate on the orchestra reading project with the student composers. Our conversations over the years have included the future of the orchestra and new orchestral music in our society. Audiences have lost a great deal of context with new music over the past 90 years, in my opinion, and new music has remained an anomaly for many listeners. So when I decided to write Jung Ho an orchestra piece, I knew it had to be music that meant something to listeners--something that would have cultural context to an audience and yet be challenging and interesting to play. And a piece that would be played more than just once.I seek a certain drama and excitement in my music. Perhaps that is why I am so attracted to composers like Mahler, Stravinky, and Daugherty. But I also have a diverse listening palate having played big band jazz as a lead trumpet player and funk as a synthesizer player.Often when I travel, especially on long driving trips, I will listen to old "art-rock" of bands such as Yes, Genesis, and Led Zeppelin. One of my favorite tunes is "Heartbreaker" from the album "Led Zeppelin II." It has a very unusual guitar solo in the middle of the song-- Unusual, because the band stops playing and Jimmy Page takes a motivically oriented solo, much like a cadenza in a concerto. It was the first time anything like that was ever done in that genre and was really the beginning of guitarists becoming virtuosos on their instruments. Actually, that solo had all the fire of a Tchaikovsky or Mendelssohn concerto cadenza.Hence, the idea came to be to combine the suggestion of this solo with orchestra and, later, to use an electric guitar or CD recording of the actual solo with the orchestra. It seemed to me that all the power of Led Zeppelin was certainly in good company with a full-sized symphony orchestra--witness Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." Could any rock band create that much excitement?

Dance Diabolique by Gary Ziek. For Concert Band (Piccolo, Flute 1/2, Oboe 1/2, Bassoon 1/2, Clarinet in Bb 1, Clarinet in Bb 2, Clarinet in Bb 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Alto Saxophone 1/2, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet in Bb 1, Trumpet in Bb 2, Trumpet in Bb 3, Horn in F 1/2, Horn in F 3/4,). Band Music. Grade 3. Score only. Duration 6:25. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.11781). Dance Diabolique was commissioned by Erik Harris, director of the Northern Nash High School Band (Rocky Mount, NC). The piece received its premiere performance at the North Carolina Music Educators Association In-Service Conference in Winston-Salem, NC in November 2004. Dance Diabolique is composed in two sections. The piece begins with a distant call in the solo horn part, which beckons the listener into a turbulent musical landscape. The call is restated as layers of sound build to a fortissimo climax with the full ensemble. The slow introduction fades into the distance, with the percussion section heralding the arrival of the fast section. The melody is initially stated by a solo clarinet, which is then joined by a solo flute. The band progresses through numerous episodes, both violent and lyrical in nature. The piece is full of driving rhythmic passages and soaring melodies, with the percussion section featured predominantly throughout the work.- Gary Ziek.

Band Music. Grade 4. Score only. Duration 5:00. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11279). Match Day takes its inspiration from a night in May 2005, when the football team I have supported from my childhood, Liverpool FC, won the European Cup in what was considered by many to be one of the greatest football matches of all time. The piece is not only inspired by a football match, but also takes its musical material from chants and songs that you will hear at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon at any football ground in Britain.Match Day was written as a result of a commission from the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (with funds from Youth Music), and their Musical Director, Bramwell Tovey, to whom the piece is dedicated and who conducted the first performance in April 2006.

Prelude from 'Tristan and Isolde' by Geoffrey Brand. Arranged by Geoffrey Brand. For Concert Band (1st Flute, 2nd Flute, 1st/2nd Oboe, English Horn, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, 3rd Bb Clarinet, Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet, 1st/2nd Bassoon, 1st/2nd Eb Alto Saxophone, Bb Tenor Saxophone, Eb Baritone Saxophone, 1st Bb Cornet, 2nd/3rd Bb Corne). Band Music. Grade 5. Score only. Duration 9:25. Published by C. Alan Publications (CN.S11276). Wagner finished the first act of Tristan and Isolde on the last day of 1857 and two years later he finished the entire opera. Yet it was not until 1865, after various disasters had prevented the piece being performed, that it was heard in public and the sensational opening of the Prelude at a stroke created a different harmonic framework for late 19th century music and beyond. Now, thanks to Geoffrey Brand's masterly arrangement, concert bands can experience Wagner's remarkable conception. Purists may argue that bands should prefer original works for the medium. But our musical understanding is not complete without reference points and who is to say that if we happen to play in a band not an orchestra we should not have the first-hand opportunity to experience these master works?
