The two existing manuscripts (1915 and 1926) of these extracts 'arranged' by Falla himself correspond to the very beginning and end of a long period during which El Amor Brujo can be seen in a series of different states. They demonstrate the care which the composer generally brought to the task of instrumentation, and more particularly the aptness and validity of this piece in his own eyes as chamber music. It is clear that Falla's art of orchestration (and notably his feeling for instrumental idiom) gives his score a profound sense of balance. Scored for piano, 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass. Programme Note A melodic ”thread” runs through the 14 minute piece, sometimes smooth and unisone, sometimes harmonized or even ”flossed up” into smaller threads. The title might make you think in terms of spiders (lat.: Arachnida) but Arachne is also the name of a weaver in roman mythology who dared to compete with the goddess Minerva in the art of weaving, and was transformed into a spider as punishment (Ovid). The name is also close to that of another mythical female figure, Ariadne, who span her thread to help Theseus find his way out of the labyrinth. Biology and myth weaved together. The title is pure association, though, as it turned up after the piece was finished.

Using the seven lead sheets from the songs on his classic video, The Musical Drummer, Louie discusses and explains the performance skills needed in playing each piece. With an actual drum chart following the lead sheet, the performer can analyze Louie's interpretation of the song. Ruth Gipps was one of the most fascinating women in the music world in England during the 20th century.
