In diesen Liedern scheint sich Robert Schumanns krisenhaftes Leben zu spiegeln. Die Komposition fallt mit den ersten Ausbruchen seiner Krankheit zusammen. Beim im ersten Gesang heraufbeschworenen Bild der ertrinkenden Ophelia drangt sich die Assoziation mit seinem drei Jahre spater folgenden Selbstmordversuch auf. Aribert Reimanns Transkription steht den Bestrebungen Schumanns, "die Fortschritte des weiter ausgebildeten Begleitinstruments, des Klaviers" starker zu nutzen, scheinbar entgegen. Andererseits wird die vollstandige Integration des Vokalparts in den musikalischen Satz des Streichquartettes Schumanns Einschatzung gerecht, die Singstimme allein konne "nicht alles wiedergeben; neben dem Ausdrucke des Ganzen sollen auch die feineren Zuge des Gedichts hervortreten."
