La Spagna - Score and parts by Josquin des Prez (1440-1521). For ATTBB/TTTBB Recorders or ATTBB Viols. String Quartets, Quintets etc., Recorder Quintets. Renaissance Band Collection. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMRB03). Josquin des Pres (c.1450 - 1521) was one of the most influential composers of the renaissance period. All the surviving polyphonic settings of fifteenth century basse danses are based on the tenor "II Re de Spagna", known more commonly as "La Spagna". One possible explanation of this fact is that these surviving pieces are not examples of dance music as such, but rather are stylised genre pieces written in a parody style derived from the tradition of the dance musicians. - BT.

Madrigals and Motets for 5 Voices - Score and Parts by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-1594). For ATTTB Recorders or Viols. Recorder Quintets, String Quartets, Quintets etc. Sacred. 3 - Moderate. Score and Parts. Published by Cheap Trills (MM.TR00023). There is ample evidence for the 16th-century practice of using voices and instruments interchangeably, but in this century practical editions of vocal music suitable for the latter is sparse. The two works in Volume I and the Three works in Volume II are suitable for either recorders or TrTnTnTnB viols. Of satisfying length, they explore the remarkable polyphonic inventiveness and expressive range of this prolific composer. INCLUDED HERE: Ogni loco mi porge doglia (from Il Primo Libro de Madrigali, 1555) Pulchra es (from Il Primo Libro de Motetti a 5 voci).

Balletts (1595) Selection II (5 Pieces) - 5 Scores by Thomas Morley (1557-1602). For SSATB recorders, strings or voices. String Quartets, Quintets etc., Recorder Quintets. Thesaurus Musicus. Choral or Vocal Music. 5 Scores. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMTM68). Thomas Morley ( c. 1557 - 1602) was an English composer, theorist, editor and organist of the Renaissance, and the foremost member of the English Madrigal School. He was the most famous composer of secular music in Elizabethan England, and the composer of the only surviving contemporary settings of verse by Shakespeare. Morleys famous Balletts to Five Voyces are sufficiently well-known to make any new edition appear redundant. However, we should not lose sight of the fact that Morleys pieces, together with the balletti of Gastoldi on which they were based (see nos. 37 and 44 of the present series) were intended for instrumentalists as well as singers. Generally speaking, modem editions have been aimed at the latter, who do not have to worry about page turns. A further five pieces from Morleys collection can be found in no. 68 of the present series. The 1595 edition also appeared in Italian, which is not surprising, given that most of Morleys pieces, including the five printed here, were based very closely on Gastoldis Balletti of 1591. In the Italian edition each piece appears with the text of the model used by Morley. However, these pieces are much more than mere arrangements of Gastoldis music, for Morley is not at all slavish in his treatment of his models. Often he takes the rhythmic pattern of Gastoldis piece and provides new melody and harmony, while in other cases he preserves some of the origial melodic contour. - BT CONTENTS: Shoot, False Love, I care not (II) Now is the month of Maying (III) My bonny lass she smileth (VII) Those dainty daffodillies (XV) I love, alas, I love thee. Balletts (1595) Selection I (5 Pieces) - Set Of Scores by Thomas Morley (1557-1602). For SSATB recorders, strings or voices. String Quartets, Quintets etc., Recorder Quintets. Thesaurus Musicus. Choral or Vocal Music. 3 - Moderate. Set of Scores. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMTM63). Morleys Balletts are, of course, very well-known. But modern editions have treated them as choral music, rather than music that can be performed on a mixture of voices and instruments. There are no page turning problems in this edition! About Thesaurus Musicus A series of small anthologies, as sets of scores.

Recorder Quintets, String Quartets, Quintets etc. Venetian Instrumental Music. Score and Parts. Published by London Pro Musica (MM.LPMVM01).
