For the first time the series "Bärenreiter’s Concert Pieces" presents arrangements of concertos for viola and violoncello. The editions are an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus string methods but can of course also be used independently.
Since concerto op. 35 only employs the first position, it is suitable for beginners and young students. The piece has been transposed to make it easier to play.

The middle work in the three late chamber music sonatas was composed in spring 1915, directly after the cello sonata (HN 633). The innovative combination of sounds – a wind instrument, a stringed instrument, and a plucked instrument – greatly contributes to the impression of restrained melancholy. Debussy himself confirmed it, saying: “It is terribly sad. And I do not know whether one should laugh or cry about it? Perhaps both at the same time?” On another occasion he emphasised the similarities with his own compositional style of the 1890s, remarking of the sonata: “It reminds me of a very old Claude Debussy – the one of the Nocturnes”.

Bis zu seiner Berufung als Kompositionslehrer an die Kolner Musikhoch-schule 1957 musste sich Bernd Alois Zimmermann einen wesentlichen Teil seines Lebensunterhaltes durch Bearbeitungen fremder Werke und durch Horspielmusiken fur den Rundfunk verdienen. Darunter fallen auch die hier aufgefuhrten Vier Bearbeitungen, die fur das im WDR in Koln damals sehr beliebte Ellegiers- Sextett bestimmt waren. Zimmermann schatzte den Konzertmeister Ellegiers wegen seiner hohen Musikalitat und bearbeitete von 1949-52 fast zwanzig Stucke fur dessen Ensemble. Die drei Schubert- Bearbeitungen "Sehnsuchtswalzer", "Landler" und "Moment musicaux" sowie die der "Traumerei" aus den Kinderszenen op. 15 von Robert Schumann zeigen, warum diese Werke im Programm des Senders ausserordentlich popular waren.
