At the beginning of the 1870s, Camille Saint-Saëns showed a particular fondness for the Violoncello. He completed his first Cello Sonata in December 1872, immediately after finishing his first Cello Concerto. The sonata is strongly reminiscent of Beethoven, not only due to the key of c minor but also predominantly on account of its gripping dramatic art. The exceptional position of this demanding, in parts highly virtuosic sonata was quickly recognised by the public and critics and so the work soon found its way into concert repertoire. Henle's Urtext edition takes all surviving sources into account – for the first time ever. Pascal Rogé and David Geringas kindly provided the markings for the Piano and Cello parts.

The initial and prevailing theme is from the song "Det Fagreste Træ" with lyrics by Ursula Andkjær Olsen and music by me. To this song I also owe the title of the piece. The melody in bar 187-217 is quoted from a pearl diver song from Bahrain, recorded by the composer and music ethnologist Poul Rovsing-Olsen. Peter Bruun

Leopold Mozart was only able to understand his son’s musical genius in terms of it being a God-given wonder: “That my boy [...] knows all of this with his 8 years that could be expected of a man of forty years. In short: whoever has not seen or heard it, cannot believe it”. In 1764 Wolfgang composed six sonatas in London – possibly after the model of Johann Christian Bach’s “Opus 2” – that can either be played as piano trios, as violin sonatas or simply on the piano. “Royal” sources were consulted for the edition: the copy in the British Library bears the handwritten note: “This Volume belongs to the Queen 1788”.
With marked and unmarked string parts.

Programme note:
Alloy III for Violin, Cello, Classical Accordion, and two Kokles
The instruments of this quintet are very different in appearance and in the way of playing as well as tone
production: strings to be bowed, strings to be plucked confronted with the airborne tone of the Accordion. The
origins and the traditions of the instruments are also very diversified reaching from traditional folkmusic (the
Kokle) and popular music (the Accordion) to art music of the classical tradition (the Violin and Cello).
Acknoledging these references and connotations I refrain nevertheless from an obvious ‘casting’ of the
instruments, since I have always been fascinated by the less evident, by transitions and gradual displacement,
by the intangible places between one and the other. I search for this ‘terrain vague’ of fruitfull incertainty and
permanent genesis.
To arrive there, I have in this piece created a musical expression, which makes hidden relations and unexplored
sonorous paths come forward between the different sound worlds of the instruments. Bringing together these
musical substances, I look for something deeper than just common sounds: a fresh musical place. And the lively
and bright sound world that emerges form this instrumental and textural ’in-between’ I associate to alloys, in
particular the silvery amalgamations of mercury.
The work was composed to musicians from the Latvian ensmble Altera Veritas and of Ensemble Aleph (France)
as a part of the project European Instrumental Laboratory.

A tour de force for any cellist, Elgar's magnificent Cello Concerto is performed more frequently than any other except that of Dvorák. Regarded as an elegy for a lost world, the Cello Concerto was written after the composer's lengthy creative stagnation during World War I. Melodic and evocative, it exhibits a remarkable scope.

Ballroom Dances (ABRSM grade level 1 - 6) is a new exciting work for cello and piano from performer and composer Mats Lidström.
As with Traffic, Spooky Pieces and Hotel Suite, Ballroom Dances makes a point of introducing less experienced players to the air of a professional recital through a corresponding piano part (full throttle!). There is passion and lyricism, wide dynamic range and swift musical contrasts. All dances comply with the international rules for competitive ballroom dancing.
