The Carl Flesch Scales System
For several decades the "Carl Flesch Scales System" for both violin and viola has been a central technical manual for aspiring, advanced and professional players and teachers of these string instruments. However it has become increasingly clear that the "system" needs upgrading for 21st Century applications, and the opportunity has been taken to clarify the essential principles that Flesch outlines in his "Art of Violin Playing" to which the Scale System was an explanatory and practise supplement.

The title is meant to suggest something playful, even childlike, but also something challenging and competitive. All these elements are part of sports, games and playing – and playing music.
Even if the mostly straightforward melodic patterns resemble the melos’ of children’s jingles and chants, substantial technical and musical demands will be made on the violin player during the six to seven minutes of musical play.

Cyril Scott composed the 'Three Lyrical Pieces' for violin and piano at the beginning of the 20th century and dedicated them to his friend, the violinist Paul Stoeving, professor at the Guildhall School of Music.'Élégie' strikes a delicate salon-like tone which runs through the entire three-part cycle. It is especially in the melodic lines of the violin that a dedidedly poetic tonal language emerges. 'Romance' impresses with Impressionist plays of colours, especially on the piano. In 'Valse triste', the extravagant composer, who had become known not only by his compositions but by writings on philosophy, occultism and homeopathy as well, adds to the salon music character in three-four time with well-measured minor clouding.

Amid the melodic flow of the violin, the piano undertakes sophisticated shifts of the bar accents, from swaying three-eight time to rhapsodic seven-eight time. A new, corrected edition of an important and substantial work which has been constructed from the existing set of parts by Russell Denwood.
It was written in 1895 when the composer was still a student at the Royal College of Music. His composition teacher, Charles Villiers Stanford, was so impressed by the piece that he took it with him on a visit to Berlin in 1897, where he arranged for the Joachim Quartet to play it. It was published in 1902, but no score appears to exist and the parts required corrections to be made.
