The Book 2 Teacher's Manual from New Directions for Strings is designed to complement the separate instrumental books. In it, all the exercises and pieces are presented in full score, with most having piano accompaniment. Throughout the Teacher's Manual are pieces designated as ensemble pieces that foster independant ensemble skills and are also suitable for concert sitiations. These sonatas are among the epoch-making works of the violin repertoire and nowadays figure in the standard repertoire of every violinist. It is all the more surprising, therefore, that until now there has been no Urtext edition of such significant works.
The score is based on a first edition supervised by Corelli himself. From what we know of performance practice in Corelli’s time, however, more was expected of the violinist than just a musical reading of the printed score: it was customary to add ornamentation verging on improvisation, with embellishment and “variations as desired”. The original score is therefore presented here with the earliest documented ornamentation from a reprint published by Roger in Amsterdam in 1708. This ornamentation is not meant to be slavishly imitated, but to stimulate the player to find their own creative and stylistically confident interpretation of the score. As Roger did not specify any ornaments for the sonatas in the second volume, the “variations as desired” used by Corelli’s pupil Geminiani have been reproduced with the ninth Sonata as an example. Advice on performance is given by the Cologne baroque specialist Reinhard Goebel. This advice does not only apply to ornamentation, but also to articulation, bowings and more besides, calling for specific markings in the separate violin part.
The realisation of the continuo part echoes the fashions of that time. Here too, advice on performance is meant to stimulate free interpretation by the continuo player. A figured bass part is included for the player who prefers to read the accompaniment from figures.

A new, corrected edition of an important and substantial work which has been constructed from the existing set of parts by Russell Denwood.
It was written in 1895 when the composer was still a student at the Royal College of Music. His composition teacher, Charles Villiers Stanford, was so impressed by the piece that he took it with him on a visit to Berlin in 1897, where he arranged for the Joachim Quartet to play it. It was published in 1902, but no score appears to exist and the parts required corrections to be made.

"The greatest jazz secret," "Great Dane," "Fiddler Supreme." Danish violinist Svend Asmussen has been dubbed many wondrous titles. Duke Ellington's first reaction, "Man you play a hell of a lot of fiddle!"
Mr. Asmussen has played with many other music legends, Edith Piaf, Benny Goodman, Hoagy Carmichael, Nat King Cole, Herbie Hancock and more. At 95, he is still going strong. After a DVD on his life was presented in 2006 by Universal/Shanachie Entertainments, The Extraordinary Life and Music of a Jazz Legend, he produced in 2009 the Makin' Whoopee! Cd for Arbors Records, and saw the production of Don't get around much anymore, in which the classical violin virtuoso Kim Sjøgren plays the solos Svend Asmussen composed while living in the South of France years ago. Mr. Asmussen has stated, "My unattainable model was, of course, Johan Sebastian Bach, whose famed violin solos I often practice playing."
These solos and the charts of numbers by Gershwin, Ellington, and Asmussen, among others, will attract violinists everywhere, as swinging encores and as integral parts of their repertoire.

This new edition is the first critical edition of the score. It is based on the original evidence of the work going to press, i.e. the first impression of the score and the engraver's draft, which is fortunately still in existence today. After the end of the first Bayreuth Festival in the autumn of 1876 Wagner gave it to the violinist Friedhold Fleischhauer, who with August Wilhelmj was leader of the Ring orchestra. The two existing manuscripts (1915 and 1926) of these extracts 'arranged' by Falla himself correspond to the very beginning and end of a long period during which El Amor Brujo can be seen in a series of different states. They demonstrate the care which the composer generally brought to the task of instrumentation, and more particularly the aptness and validity of this piece in his own eyes as chamber music.
