Beginning-Intermediate. Book+DVD. 136 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.21525DP). ISBN 9780786682393. Scottish. 8.75" x 11.75" inches. The Glengarry Collection contains 164 Slow Airs, Marches, Strathspeys, Reels, Jigs and Hornpipes with Stories, History and Photographs. Some of these tunes have never been published before, while others are available only in out-of-print books or in pipe settings, and the collection also includes a number of tunes composed by Aonghas himself, and tunes composed in honor of Aonghas. The tunes are fully chorded in a style appropriate to Aonghas' band experience. All these are richly illustrated by transcriptions of Aonghas' bowings, grace-notes, stories, and photos of scenes and people from Aonghas' varied life careers, including old family photos. Finally, there is an accompanying DVD with videos of Aonghas' impromptu and passionate performances of 61 of the tunes in the collection.

Three Pastiche Pieces. (for Violin and Piano). By Evan Turner. For Violin. Solos. Hardie Music Press. Scottish. Intermediate. Book. 12 pages. Published by Hardie Press (MB.HP28). ISBN 9780946868292. Scottish. 9" x 12" inches. The Three Pastiche Pieces were written for a young pupil. Composed in a tuneful and light style they pay their musical respects to the early jazz era. The opening tune, an elegant cakewalk is followed by a melancholy sweet ballad and the set concludes with a jaunty upbeat number suggestive of a jam session. Two of the compositions 'Blue Lullaby' and 'The Jazzie Knumber' have been selected by the ABRSM as Violin Grade 2 List C alternative pieces 2005-2008. Reviewed by Glasgow Centre of ESTA Scotland: We gave all three pieces in the volume the thumbs up. This is well-written teaching material reminiscent of the Rolland repertoire, where simple playing techniques are used to give exciting music to beginner players. The jazz idiom gives this music more appeal to today's young players.

A Fiddler's Book of Scotish Jigs from 18th & 19th Century by Charles Gore. Edited by Alastair Hardie. For Fiddle. Solos. Hardie Music Press. Scottish. Beginning-Intermediate. Book. 48 pages. Published by Hardie Press (MB.HP07). ISBN 9780946868216. Scottish. 8.25" x 11.75" inches. A great deal of Scottish fiddle music was collected and composed by individuals who have largely faded from memory, not because their work is in any way inferior, but simply because the collections they published have become very difficult to find. Whereas the better-known quote "fiddler-composers" (like Gow and Marshall) have been kept in the public eye by writes, artists, and the music publishing world, others are now all but forgotten. A reservoir of quite excellent dance music -- strathspeys, reels, quicksteps, as well as jigs-- remains to be rediscovered. This book contains music from a half-dozen of the lesser-known talents of the period 1780-1820. Call it a first step towards rekindling the quest for the hems of the Scottish repertoire. There is plenty more where these came from! All the music in this volume adheres to the composers' original published versions of the melodies, and adds chord symbols to supply the original "bass" part.

Scottish Fire. (Traditional and Original Tunes for Fiddle from 1762 to the Present). By Bonnie Rideout. For Fiddle. Solos. Maggie's Music. Scottish. Intermediate. Book. 56 pages. Published by Mel Bay Publications, Inc (MB.99253). ISBN 9780786662791. Scottish. 8.75x11.75 inches. The fiddle has been popular in Scotland for over 500 years as an accompanying instrument for dance and song. Bonnie Rideout has been playing traditional Scottish fiddle music since the 1980s. This collection presents favorite tunes which Bonnie had stashed away over the years while awaiting the perfect opportunity to record them. The music written here ranges from J. Scott Skinner's Dr. Gordon Stable (a wonderful fiery reel she once played to garner her first national fiddling title as a young teenager), to Fear A Bhata (a heartbreaking air she has known as long as she can remember). These Scottish fiddle selections have been carefully transcribed from Bonnie's recording Scottish Fire. It would be impossible to write down all her bowings and every grace note, especially since they are not always consistent from one playing to the next. Readers should use this book as a basis for exploring their own voice within the music.
