This is an intense, emotional composition for mature bands. From the first note of the pensive, reflective saxophone quintet opening to the soaring ensemble conclusion, you know that Kind Of True is special. If you are looking for a work that has challenges for every member of your band and is guaranteed to raise some goose bumps, this chart is worthy of your attention.

A lush, rubato introduction sets up the fast swing tempo (q = 240) that comprises the main body of this composition. Several times during the chart Fred uses an "improvised rhythm on a given pitch" technique in the winds that results in a fabric of driving eighth notes that sounds incredibly interesting and gives all your students a chance to listen and react to the music around them. The main focus of this chart is on the ensemble, but there is a solo spot for tenor saxophone that may be opened up or reassigned to anyone. (Includes an optional part for vibes.).

Many pieces have been written using "rhythm" changes, but you've never heard anything like this! Covering everything from straight-ahead swing to a funky half-time shuffle, this new composition makes an ideal festival opener or closer. The head is written for tenor saxophone and trumpet and both are featured in the solo section. The shout section has some punchy brass trading fours with the saxophones.

Beautiful muted brass and thick saxophone chords provide the backdrop for solo piano in this lush ballad. The set comes with two piano parts. One part is completely written out (including the solo section) and the other has just chord symbols in the improvised sections. (5/5/4/4).

Recognized worldwide as a composer and arranger of the highest caliber, Carl Strommen has had music performed by everyone from top New York and Los Angeles recording artists to middle school choirs and bands. He is known for his ability to create music that will work in just about any situation, and we think you'll agree that this new composition for young jazz ensemble is right on the money. This great new piece at medium-easy level is in the swinging tradition of Billy Byers and Quincy Jones. Trumpet and tenor saxophone kick things off in an "easy 2" feel with a blues-tinged saxophone versus brass passage following. There are written solos for tenor saxophone (optional trombone) and trumpet. Carl has also included a section without the rhythm section to showcase your wind players to the fullest. The suggested minimum required instrumentation for the music in this series is 2 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums.

In this sparkling new arrangement of a classic tune the spotlight is on the full ensemble. The trumpets lead off with the melody backed solidly by the saxes and trombones. The next chorus features the full band playing a soft yet punchy harmonized line in the Basie style. There is also a saxophone soli and a nice "winds only" unison section. The suggested minimum required instrumentation for the music in this series is 2 alto saxophones, 1 tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums. Parts are included for standard instrumentation (5/4/4/4) and all charts include a CD with a full version and a solo practice track.

Your band will love the jazz-rock groove of this new piece! As jazz spread north in the '30s and '40s from New Orleans, Kansas City became a major jazz "hub," and this composition reflects the high energy and excitement of those times in a contemporary style. Driving rhythms and punchy ensemble riffs will make this one an audience favorite!

Work Song is one of the best jazz classics ever in a minor key. The original Nat Adderley recording is the starting point for this new arrangement. After the first time through the head (by the trumpets and altos, of course!), the stop time section from the original is used with the harmonized melody. There is a solid shout chorus that leads to a soft ensemble passage before the solo written for alto saxophone.

Ike is one of the most "happening" bass players on the New York scene today, and this creative piece demonstrates that his writing chops are equally strong. (It doesn't hurt that his dad, Fred Sturm, wrote the arrangement!) The swinging lines in the winds over a well written hip-hop groove in the rhythm section make this a very appealing, modern-sounding chart. Make no mistake, though-this piece is jazz through and through! There are extended solos for tenor saxophone and trumpet with extensive ideas for improvisation provided. (Trumpet 1 to written C with one D at the end, Trombone to F.).

The original Yankee Doodle Dandy, George M. Cohan, was a major figure in the development of Broadway, but his classic tune never sounded so good! Master arranger Carl Strommen uses his creative harmonic language and perfect sense of jazz style to turn this Broadway march into a medium slow swing chart that uses the elements of the modern jazz ensemble to the fullest. The arrangement leads off with the band playing the first chorus in the mezzo piano range which is one of the reasons that this is a terrific selection to follow a loud "burner." The saxophones get a good workout in their soli, and there is solo space for tenor saxophone and trumpet. (Written solos are included.).

This slow "down and dirty" 12/8 blues has it all! Lines drenched in triplets, trumpets with plunger mutes, a stop time section with wailing saxophones, more diminished chords per square inch than "regular" blues

Alternating between Latin and swing, this impressive new piece is reminiscent of the way jazz players usually perform On Green Dolphin Street. The opening Latin section is over a rhythmic ostinato and pedal F, which makes the release to swing even more effective. The solos for alto saxophone and trumpet are one chorus each (but could easily be extended) using the same Latin/swing format as the head. Following the solo section is a saxophone soli and an exciting "breakdown" section. Some wide dynamic contrasts in the final ensemble section take the chart out. (Trumpet 1 to written D, Trombone to A-flat, Trombone 4 is for bass trombone.).

A lush, rubato introduction sets up the infectious shuffle feel of this rockin' feature for baritone saxophone. The key selection of A-flat helps ensure that all the lines lay well for the soloist and the ranges are moderate for all the players. A guaranteed audience favorite, this hard-hitting chart will become a "must-have" for bands with strong, sassy bari players.

This composition was out of print for some time, and we are happy to be able to make it available again. Riverscape has long been a staple in high school jazz repertoire and is included on several major contest lists. This soprano saxophone feature uses shifting harmonic "color palettes" and mixed meter to create a fabulous and interesting composition.
