This collection of Orchestral Solos has been prepared primarily for the convenience of students who wish to take the Licentiate Diploma examination of Trinity College London. However, it has a far wider use in teaching, in preparing students for orchestral playing and in particular for orchestral auditions. The upper woodwinds provide a flowing melody with harmonic and rhythmic structure developing throughout the piece. The center section showcases the reeds with a jazz feel punctuated by tall chords. The ending is a live equivalent of a fade-out, with a slightly unexpected finish.

Anton (or Antonin, or Antoine) Reicha was born in Prague, on February 26, 1770. He was an influential theorist, but is perhaps best known today for his substantial contribution to the wind quintet literature. He settled in Paris in 1808, and was appointed professor of counterpoint and fugue at the Paris Conservatory in 1818. Many who would become notable composers studied under Reicha, including Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, Charles Gounod, and (briefly) Cesar Franck. Antonio Rosetti was born Anton Roessler, around 1750 (he had adopted the Italianate form by 1773) , in Litomence, a town in Northern Bohemia. He composed a great deal of music, including many symphonies, concerti, and vocal works, probably being best known for his horn concerti (which may have served as models for Mozart's own).
